Reading

Writing

The goal of the English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum is to develop effective writers. Students will write a variety of paragraphs, essays, research reports, lab reports and literature responses.  The conventions of good writing are emphasized. Grammar instruction will focus on the parts of speech, capitalization and punctuation.  Fifth graders will also learn spelling strategies using high-frequency words.  Students are expected to apply these basic English and spelling skills correctly in all their written work.  Speaking and listening skills are developed through class discussions and oral presentations.

Units in Reading & Writing

In addition to the Units of Study within the Reader's and Writer's Workshop models, vocabulary instruction, grammar instruction, and word study are integrated.

In Reading, students are taught strategies that help them go beyond what is happening in the book (retell) and into interpreting deeper theories and ideas.

In Writing, we work to build writing stamina and give exposure to writing and responding to different types of writing styles and texts.

Reading & Writing Standards

There are four sections for the standards: Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Language.
