Spring 2022 eSports Teams and Participants

April 14, 2022

The Spring Season of eSports officially started March 9th and 10th. There are 2 teams competing. Varsity SMITE and Middle School Rocket League.

Varsity SMITE is tied for 2nd place with a 5-1 record in their conference with 2 weeks left to compete in the regular season.

Rocket League is a new team that is learning to play "with each other". Their record stands at 3-3.

This is what a typical night at eSports looks like. Both teams happened to be competing at the same time this night!

Rocket League: Sam Kurth, Elliot O'Connor, & Elias Repinski

SMITE: Tim Herman, Jacob Anderson, Gavin Myre, Dylan Guilluame, Zach Suchomel, Wyatt Leasure, Tamara Stenberg

My dream has been to get the group to NTC in Wausau to see the campus and game in their stadium. Such a cool experience for these 16 individuals.

Congratulations to the Overwatch team as they advanced in the second round of playoffs. Their season ended last night to a tough BSMS team which is advancing to state.

The Smash team finished their season last week.

Jack McGovern earned a spot on the all state team for his role as the Jack of All Trades. Jacob Anderson earned a spot on the all conference team for his support role!

December 13-14

This week is Week 8 and the final regular season week of the season. On Tuesday night, the Varsity Overwatch team played the make up game from last week against Weyauwega-Fremont. We lost all 4 maps on the night

The SMASH team played Lodi High School. We had some players win their first games and matches. So that was a great way to finish the season! Even though we only won a match, we improved!

On Wednesday night, the Varsity Overwatch team played BSMS! It was a hard fought battle between 2 very evenly matched teams. In the end, BSMS claimed the victory. The Varsity Overwatch team finished the season 4-4.

December 7-8

The SMASH team garnered another loss, but not as badly as previous matches. We are a young, inexperienced team so as long as we are showing improvement, coach is happy . On Wednesday night, the Varsity Overwatch game was cancelled at the last minute due to connectivity issues at the opposing school. Luckily for the Hatchets, the game will be made up next week and some of our quarantined players will be back in action!

November 30 & December 1

Week 6 was another rough week for the Hatchets. Progress 2 grades really hurt our teams. We had to scrounge up a players again in order to have enough to compete in SMASH. Unfortunately, we suffered a loss. On Wednesday night, Varsity Overwatch competed against Manitowoc Lutheran. Luckily for the Hatchets, we got a win even though we had to bring up several JV players. Bringing up some JV players meant we didn't have enough to compete on Thursday night and we had to forfeit. JV Overwatch will have to forfeit the remaining games in the season (2).

November 22-23

Week 5 was rough for the Hatchets with having to cram 3 games into 2 nights. Monday night JV Overwatch competed against Kettle Moraine and lost. We had to scrounge up a player from SMASH to help out. Tuesday night SMASH competed against Racine St. Catherine's and suffered a loss. Meanwhile on the other end of the library, Varsity Overwatch was supposed to compete against Wautoma, but we had to forfeit because we only had 4 players at start time. Going forward, we are definitely going to have to firm up communication and commitment as we are scored by other teams for our punctuality, professionalism, friendliness and team coordination. Obviously when we scrounge and/or forfeit at the last minute we don't leave a good impression.

November 15-18

Week 4 ended in a loss for SMASH, a forfeit by the other team for a victory for Varsity Overwatch, and a loss for JV Overwatch. Midway through the season, SMASH is 0-4, Varsity Overwatch is 3-1 and JV Overwatch is 1-4.

November 2-4

Week 2 on the season SMASH Bros team of Zach Suchomel, Tim Herman, Gavin Myre, and Elliot O'Connor took on New Holstein High School. This week's results was much better than last week's as the Hatchets took the W.

The streak continued on Wednesday night, as the Varsity Overwatch team of Jack McGovern, Jacob Anderson, Gavin Myre, Dylan Guilluame, Mathew Walbeck and Richard Burke swept all 4 maps against NEW Innovations High School. This win definitely gave them the confidence they needed and showed their practice is paying off. The JV Overwatch match has been rescheduled to next week.

October 26-28

The esports season started on Tuesday night as the SMASH Bros team of Zach Suchomel, Tim Herman, Tamara Stenberg, Elias Repinski, and Elliot O'Connor took on Big Foot High School. While the Hatchets team lost the contest I was impressed how much they've improved in the last few weeks. And, Monday night two eighth graders joined the squad in their first practice and were thrown into competition the next night. This team will improve as the season progresses and some of our "regulars" will be back from quarantine.

Wednesday night, the Varsity Overwatch team of Jack McGovern, Jacob Anderson, Wyatt Leasure, Dylan Guilluame, Mathew Walbeck and Richard Burke competed against a tough team from Walden High School The Hatchets lost the match but took 1 game in the contest. The Hatchets will be tough to defeat in the upcoming weeks as they have been "playing the tape" and analyzing areas of improvement and strengths.

Thursday night, the JV Overwatch team of Trey Morrison, Brian Wiesman, Xander Myrin and three eighth graders: Bradeyn Jarett, Elias Albrent, and Kenny Turner took on a tough Racine Case team. The eighth graders came to their first practice Monday night and they too, like the SMASH team, were thrown into the ring to compete last night. The Hatchets were defeated, but showed steady improvement during the contest. As the team practices together more they too will become competitive.

I'm excited to expand eSports to 8th graders this year. They were invited to their first practice Monday night and five of the six who practiced Monday night already competed. The learning and excitement will continue to grow as the season progresses.

We hope to be streaming the Varsity Overwatch team next Wednesday when they compete against New School. The JV overwatch will compete on Thursday against Wautoma, and Smash Bros will compete Tuesday night against New Holstein.
