Laptop Bags (copied from Fisler Navigator Newsletter 7/31/2022)
To ensure that all laptops are safely transported and protected, it has been our policy at Fisler that every 3rd-8th grade student carry their laptop in a separate laptop bag outside of their backpack.
Here are 10 ways that laptops can be damaged when carried in a backpack:
Cracked screens: The laptop screen is one of the most fragile and exposed parts of the laptop. Closing objects like pencils, cords or even earbuds inside the laptop can cause the screen to crack.
Dropping: You should assume no safe distance is acceptable for the laptop to drop, even if it's in a backpack. Tossing your backpack onto a bed or letting it drop to the ground is not recommended.
Trauma: A backpack may be able to handle getting bumped or banged around, but the laptop inside can't. Trauma from banging into walls, seats or desks can damage it.
Shaking: Most laptops have SSDs, which means shaking the laptop may not cause damage. However, rough shaking can disrupt the components and potentially cause loss of saved data.
Weather damage: Not all backpacks are weather-resistant, which means a walk through the rain could cause moisture to penetrate the interior and damage the laptop.
Food/beverage damage: Sliding an uncovered laptop into a backpack that has lunch in it, even if the food or drink (water bottle) is covered and capped, an accidental spill could cause a lot of damage to the laptop.
Overloading: Having textbooks, notebooks, lunchboxes, and school supplies in a backpack, along with a laptop, will put pressure on the laptop and crush it or may crack the screen and eventually cause the laptop to not work.
Pressure: Nothing should rest on top of your backpack when packing the laptop. Other backpacks and books — even ones that don't weigh much — could potentially cause damage if they are placed on top of your computer.
Overheating: Leaving the laptop on or charging while it's in a laptop bag can cause it to overheat. Be sure to put it to sleep or turn it off completely when in a laptop bag.
Inserting and removing: Always insert and remove the laptop from the backpack properly. Squeezing the screen too hard while removing can accidentally lead to cracks.
Good laptop bags can range from approximately $17-25 or more. Make sure to look for one that has:
Durable Material: PU Leather, Polyester
Shockproof Padding: Padded on all sides to protect laptop
*Laptop bags should only be big enough to fit the laptop and charger (maybe find one with a separate outside pocket for the charger). No other materials (paper, pencils, etc.) should be put in the laptop bag because additional materials can cause damage to the laptop.
Please make sure to have a proper laptop bag for your child’s laptop so that damage can potentially be eliminated and minimized for maximum use and reliability for the school year. Please contact the school office if you are in need of a laptop bag.
