Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church, passed away on April 21st, 2025 from a stroke and heart failure. His death came just one day after his annual Easter mass, where thousands of Catholics around the world came to see him in St. Peter’s square. Pope Francis was a groundbreaking Pope; he was the first pope since Pope Gregory III to hail from a non European country, and the first pope to come from the Southern Hemisphere, coming from the South American country of Argentina. Francis additionally broke ground by being a Jesuit pope, the first of his kind. Many will remember Francis for his kindness, courtesy and generosity, especially for the poor and disadvantaged.
Immediately when elected the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, originally cardinal Jorge Mario Bergolio, showed the world that he would be a different pope. Instead of wearing the ornate papal robes that popes usually wear when elected, Francis decided on just wearing the plain white garments that popes wear on a day to day basis. Additionally, instead of deciding to live in the large, grand Aposolic Palace that most popes reside in, Francis decided to reside in a guest house, owning very little inside his apartment.
Even Francis’ name set the tone in which his papacy was going to be run. Bergolio took up the name Pope Francis after Saint Francis of Assisi, a saint who gave up his riches to help the poor. Every day of his papacy, Pope Francis looked out for the poor, disadvantaged, and prejudiced. He never discriminated against people because of their race, culture, or their religion, even if they were catholic or not.
Just a few days after his death, cardinals arrived in the Vatican to elect a new pope in what is known as a Conclave. After a few days of deliberation, the cardinals elected cardinal Robert Prevost from Chicago as pope. Prevost, taking the name Leo XIV, made it clear that he would continue Pope Francis’ legacy in his papacy, taking time to pay respect to the late pope in the early days of his papacy.
As Pope for over a decade, Pope Francis will go down in history as a pope of the people. Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis didn’t just devote his life to his religion and to the church, but to the lives of everyday people. Many will remember Pope Francis for his devotion, astuteness, and kindness for every person, regardless of socioeconomic, cultural, religious and societal status, making him missed by people of the Catholic Faith and people around the world.
Donald Trump was inaugurated as our country’s 47th president on January 20th, 2025 inside of the capitol rotunda due to extremely cold conditions in Washington, D.C. Trump’s inauguration featured guests from former presidents such as Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W Bush, and Bill Clinton, celebrities like Carie Underwood and Tucker Carlson, politicians like Senator Bernie Sanders and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and billionaire tech CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. In his second inaugural address, Trump promised to usher in a “golden age”, reiterated on his campaign promises like mass deportations of illegal immigrants, and flaunted his election victory.
Trump’s first day in office was defined by a slew of executive orders. Some of President Trump’s first orders included pardoning January 6th offenders, declaring a national emergency at the southern border, and redefining the role of federal workers. Additionally, President Trump signed an executive order stripping away birthright citizenship, a protection which is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. This executive order has been challenged by district courts throughout the country, and it is unclear whether it will fully go into effect.
As of now, the Trump administration has been focused on imposing tariffs on countries such as Mexico, Canada, and China, stopping the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs at our borders, ending DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) appointments, and reducing the size of the bureaucracy.
For the past couple of months, people have raved about the upcoming TikTok ban if ByteDance doesn’t sell the platform to an American company due to security concerns. Many didn’t expect it actually to happen. Many posted goodbye videos and throwback TikTok trends as a eulogy for the app. On January 19th, TikTok went dark in the evening leaving many users distraught about the removal of their beloved app. Little did users know that it would be back about 14 hours later. But has it changed?
TikTok is a platform for over 170 million users and 7 million small businesses selling on TikTok shops, displaying the platform's impact. A lot of these people make most or nearly all of their income from their small businesses on TikTok. With TikTok’s popularity and influence, it provides a way for their business to reach many people and increase their sales. Besides this, others on the app are influencers who make a lot of their income from the app. People believed that shutting down the app would jeopardize people’s businesses and the lives of those who use TikTok to make money. Despite what many think, TikTok provides many jobs and a lot of money to the US economy.
With the upcoming ban, people were looking for a TikTok “dupe”. Some ideas for apps for the “TikTok refugees” were Instagram Reels, Rednote, and Lemon8. Many felt unconvinced to watch Reels due to the crude and rude comments that tend to be left there. With that, Rednote quickly became the popular alternative, with millions downloading the Chinese app making it the #1 downloaded app on the Apple App Store as well as the Google Play Store.
The impending doom of the app led many influencers who became celebrities from the app and others who are known for their beloved content to make farewell videos. Also, people were making parody funeral videos for the app. These videos served as a funny and lighthearted way to say goodbye to something so many people contribute to.
When the ban took place, it caught people off guard. Many assumed that the ban would go into effect at midnight, but it went into effect a couple of hours early, kicking everyone off the app. People quickly fled to Rednote for the night and fled to Instagram to post about it being gone. However, it came back around noon the next day due to CEO Shou Chew talking with President Trump and getting an extension. Many believe that this whole thing was a PR stunt to give Trump the credit while he’s the one who introduced the ban initially in 2020. People are also saying that banning an app for “security concerns” is a governmental overreach and infringes on the right to free speech since the US government cannot control the app. People believe it wants to for censorship reasons.
Though the app is back, many feel like something happened while they were gone and that it doesn’t feel the same. Is this paranoia or did the algorithm actually change? No one knows. There has been speculation that Shou Chew is no longer the CEO and it was sold to Meta, but he has debunked that and assured that he is still the CEO. Even with the extension, if TikTok does not sell by the deadline, will it get banned for good? We shall see.
Over the past few weeks, the Los Angeles area has been experiencing many bad fires around the city. The fires are spreading rapidly due to the dry conditions and high winds in California and across the US. These fires have destroyed over 40,000 acres and have taken the lives of at least 28 people. The Palisades and Eaton fires are expected to be the costliest in history. Recently, the new Hughs fire broke out and is burning land in record time. It has already burned 10,000 acres in only a few hours west of Los Angeles. All of these fires have raised questions about climate change, especially with the new executive administration coming in just a few days
The Palisades fires have been the deadliest and most destructive, with the Eaton, Hughes, Lidia, and Hurst fires following. 200,000 people have been forced to evacuate. Authorities say the fires have been difficult to contain due to the drying water supply in LA, leading to many fire hydrants being empty. Firefighters are tirelessly fighting the fires, many coming from prisons, Canada, and Mexico to help the efforts. The ongoing strong winds are making it difficult to contain the fire. As of 1/23.25, many of the fires still have yet to be completely contained. These fires have cost over $250 billion in damages and have left many people without somewhere to go. Some businesses like Airbnb are offering a free place to stay for victims of the fires for a week. Other hotels offer free or discounted shelter to victims. There are also many centers for donated clothes, food, toys, pet supplies, and more for the displaced people. They’re overflowing with donations as others look to do anything to help the people affected. However, these fires leave many people looking for a new place to live as hotels are not permanent residences. There is already a housing crisis in LA and now thousands of people are simultaneously homeless. These people are not going to be able to settle for a while.
These fires once again raise concerns about climate change. Last year was the hottest year on record, causing drought in a multitude of areas. The South was also hit with two back-to-back hurricanes. The Trump administration has just taken charge of the country, an administration that will add about 4 billion metric tons of carbon emissions to the atmosphere. This moves away from helping the climate crisis. Climate activists are calling for something to be done or disasters like this will continue and worsen.
Though these fires have taken a lot from the victims involved, they remain hopeful for the future. Fire insurance and governmental financial aid should help many of the displaced families. People are looking to the future with the hope of rebuilding, despite losing many memories and valuables in their burnt homes. Fundraisers are being held to raise money, accumulating about $100 million on GoFundMe. This is a terrible disaster, but knowing many are doing their utmost to help the situation and the people affected is giving faith for the future of Los Angeles.
On December 29th, 2024, former President Jimmy Carter passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia at the age of 100. Carter had been in hospice care for nearly two years, struggling with stage four metastatic melanoma. At his death, Jimmy Carter was the longest living president ever in history, and the first president to live up to the age of 100. Carter’s long and well lived life had been defined as one of service both to our country and to humanity, faith, and love.
As a political outsider raised in the small town of Plains, Georgia, President Carter vowed to restore faith in our government during a period of time surrounded by government corruption, a tumultuous economy, and political unrest. His short one-term but impactful Presidency helped to establish peace abroad through his incredible work in the Camp David Accords and helped to create an efficient government by cutting down on government waste and establishing the Departments of Energy and Education. Additionally, Carter expanded equity and access to opportunity in our government by appointing more women and minorities to the federal courts and the bureaucracy.
Carter’s presidency was cut short due to a variety of factors. Some of the most poignant reasons were his unsuccessful handling of the Iranian Hostage Crisis, high inflation rates, and his “soft ball” approach to diplomacy, especially towards the Soviet Union. Carter just couldn’t live up to soon-to-be president Ronald Reagan’s rhetoric of “were you better off four years ago?”, so his turbulent presidency came to an end after just one term.
In retrospect to his entire life, Jimmy Carter’s time as President was short. However, even after his presidency, Carter didn’t stop being a leader. In the years after his presidency, Jimmy Carter founded the Carter Center in partnership with his wife, Rosyalnn Carter. The Carter Foundation’s goal is to promote international peace, health, and well-being. It has helped to accomplish international goals such as to eradicate diseases such as the Guinea worm disease and maintain free and fair elections abroad, with the foundation overseeing elections in 40 countries. Additionally, Carter served under Habitat for Humanity, and participated in building homes even as he reached his 90s. Even if Jimmy Carter’s time as president was fleeting, he didn’t stop the fight for a better future, with his work in his post-presidency serving as testament.
Carter was memorialized in a week-long funeral in early January that started in Plains, Georgia, and ended with him lying in state in the Capitol and a funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral. Then-President Joe Biden delivered Carter’s eulogy, stating: “It was an endorsement based on what I believe is Jimmy Carter’s enduring attribute: Character. Character. Character,”. It is indeed a fact that, out of all of Jimmy Carter’s accomplishments and blunders, his legacy will be remembered through the sands of time through only by three words: decency, humility, and character.
On Tuesday, November 5th, 2024, Republican candidate and 45th President Donald Trump won his reelection bid, becoming the first President since Grover Cleveland to win two non-consecutive terms. His victory came as a complete surprise to many people, as he won every single swing state and the popular vote in almost one night. This marked the first time the Republicans had done so since George Bush in 2004.
Despite the extremely competitive nature of the 2024 election, the election itself was really uncontested, with Donald Trump cruising to victory in just one night. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris had an early lead in many of the swing states, however, it became evident that that lead would shift as solidly blue states like Virginia and New Jersey began to tilt for Trump. In all, President-Elect Trump won 312 electoral votes and 50.2% of the popular vote, and Vice President Kamala Harris won 226 electoral votes and 48.1% of the vote.
Along with winning the Presidency, Republicans were also able to flip the Senate, winning a majority of 53 seats. Senate seats have been highly contested and could have a stark impact on the balance of power in our government. Some of these seats include one in Arizona where Democrat Ruben Gaellgo won against Republican challenger Kari Lake in a race that took days to decide and in Pennsylvania, where a mandatory recount is underway due to an extremely tight race.
As for the House, Republicans are on track to win the 218 seats needed to keep their majority. The House of Representatives has been the closest and the slowest race of the election as, even a week after the election, it has not been called for a party yet. The Republicans have made more ground in the House this election, winning districts like Pennsylvania’s 7th District, where incumbent Susan Wild narrowly lost to Republican challenger Ryan Mackenzie. Currently, Republicans are projected to make even more ground, as they lead in several swing districts that have been crucial in this election.
2024 Elections in Our Area
On Tuesday, November 5th, countless Pennsylvanians went to the polls to elect the next President and a set of public officials to represent them. As for the Presidential race, Republican Candidate Donald Trump was able to carry Pennsylvania’s 19 electoral votes, which were crucial for him to win the election. Pennsylvania started on a good track for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, however, Donald Trump chipped away at her lead throughout the night until he finally gained the lead in the state and won.
The Senate race in Pennsylvania was and still is still extremely close, with Republican challenger David McCormick narrowly in the lead coming into the election’s mandatory recount. The race for Pennsylvania’s Senate seat lasted many days, with incumbent Bob Casey Jr. in the slight advantage for most of the time. However, as time progressed, McCormick gained a very slight lead against Casey, a lead so small that a mandatory recount had to be called. At this moment, no clear winner of this race has been called, however, the Associated Press has given McCormick the edge.
In terms of the House, Democratic incumbent representative Chrissy Houlahan won yet another 2 years in office, beating Republican challenger Neil Young. In the State House and Senate, Democratic candidate Jacklyn Rusnock will replace Mark Rozzi’s seat in the state’s 126th Representative District, beating out Republican challenger James Oswald. Additionally, Republican state representative Mark Gillen won the state’s 127th District in an uncontested race. For the state senate, Democratic Senator Judy Schwank beat out her competition Cumru Township Commissioner Lisha Rowe, winning another 4 years in office.
On October 1st, 2024, Republican candidate for Vice President and Senator from Ohio JD Vance faced off against the Democratic candidate for Vice President and current Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz in a Vice Presidential debate in New York City. Topics of the debate ranged from border security, international affairs, abortion rights, Donald Trump, and democracy. In all, the overall reception of the debate was pretty neutral, with both parties claiming that their candidate respectively performed well, standing in stark contrast to the reception of the Presidential Debate which occurred almost a month prior.
During the debate, both Governor Walz and Senator Vance were hit with some very important and difficult questions. When asked about his involvement in the 1984 Tiananmen Square Incident, Governor Walz stumbled and gave an incoherent answer, while Senator Vance refused to even give an answer when asked about the legitimacy of the 2020 election.
The rest of the debate focused on key policy issues. These issues ranged from domestic ones, such as climate change, abortion, gun laws, and foreign ones such as the war in Gaza and Ukraine. Governor Walz continued to promote domestic priorities such as ‘common sense’ gun laws, tax raises for the ultra-wealthy, tax cuts for the middle class and abortion rights, saying that they are “basic right[s]” and should not be determined “by geography”. On the topic of foreign affairs, Walz promised the promotion of “steady leadership” to promote peace abroad in areas such as Gaza and Ukraine. As for Senator Vance, he harped mainly on inflation, and the crisis at the border. In his debate, Vance attacked the Biden Harris Administration for raising the prices of every-day items through inflation, and the mismanagement of the border, attacking Harris particularly at her role as ‘Border-Tsar’. As for foreign affairs, Vance promised to secure ‘peace through strength’ by using the military to be used as deterrents to foreign enemies such as Iran.
Not Really a Vice Presidential Debate
One of the main talking points of the Vice Presidential debate wasn’t necessarily about policy or character, but about the VP’s running mate.
Governor Walz continuously harped not on Vance, but his running mate, former President Donald Trump, and his plans for his presidency.
“A nearly 80-year old Donald Trump talking about crowd sizes is not what we need at the moment,” argued Walz during the debate.
Walz additionally brought up Project 2025, which is a talking point that many democrats have used as rhetoric against the former president. Even though Trump formally denounced the plan on his Truth Social account, Governor Walz still took a jab at it, arguing that Trump will use it to excessively expand the powers of the Presidency.
Vance additionally took jabs at Harris, citing her inefficient manner of dealing with the border crisis and the economy.
“I think you want to solve this problem, but I don’t think Kamala Harris does,” argued Vance during the debate.
Impact of the Debate
Many have argued that Vice Presidential -- and even Presidential debates don’t do much in terms of swaying public opinion, and this Vice Presidential debate has proved that hypothesis valid. The immediate aftermath of the Vance-Walz Debate was neutral, with both parties respectively saying that their candidate won. According to a Statista poll, a slight majority of people agreed that Vance had won the debate, however this result comes within a considerable margin of error. However, both candidates experienced a considerable gain of support according to the poll.
In all, the Vice Presidential debate served as a stark juxtaposition to the Presidential Debate; the debate was mostly respectful, with Vance and Walz showing decent morality for one another. At this point, the Vice Presidential Debate serves as the final debate between the two major tickets this election, with Donald Trump and Kamala Harris refusing to have a second Presidential Debate. It’s now up to the remaining days of this election season for the candidates to lock down their campaigns, and prepare for November 5th.
Hurricane season is known to occur from the beginning of June to the end of November. These hurricanes usually affect the southernmost part of America and the Caribbean islands. This past September and October, hurricanes Helene and Milton rampaged the southern states and caused immense damage. Many lost their homes, pets, jobs, and priceless memorabilia. Some lost their lives or loved ones. These hurricanes caused billions in damage and it could take cities months to get back to a liveable state. However, a question arises: What do these hurricanes mean for the future of the country and climate change?
Hurricane Helene was the first blow to the US. Arriving on September 24, the category 4 hurricane initially hit the handle of Florida and traveled north into Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. Helene also brought massive floods with it flooding 16 eastern states including North Carolina. North Carolina doesn’t normally see hurricanes and was unprepared for the massive damage the water would cause. Because of the unpredictability of the weather caused by Helene, many people lost their lives in the floods as people weren’t evacuated. The death toll for Helene sits at about 230 people with 26 still missing and caused around $30.5 billion and $47.6 billion.
Hurricane Milton arrived not long after Helene on October 9, 2024. It made landfall as a category 3 storm, but in the days leading up to this, it was much scarier. The storm was noticed to be a rapidly intensifying storm and quickly got up to category 5 status in a very short window of time. At one point, a scientist on a weather channel was crying, noting how it was reaching the “mathematical limit” for pressure which became a frenzied topic on the internet. Milton was predicted to make landfall in Tampa and decrease in strength. Because of the near-past hurricane Helene, cities were quick to put out evacuation orders to warn citizens in fear of another Helene situation and to save lives. People were quick to leave which in turn left a significantly lower death toll at 14 people. However, any lives lost are still a tragedy. Milton caused around $20 billion in damages bringing the cost of both hurricanes to about $50 billion.
All these hurricanes brought up the topic of climate change and how it’s influencing our weather patterns. Climate change has caused water temperatures in the Gulf Coast and Atlantic Ocean to increase, making it a perfect storm-creator as tropical storms need warm water to form. Increasing temperatures ensures we are in for more hurricanes that are stronger and deadlier in the future. These events are pushing more people to be activists for climate change-related laws for the government to implement.
While Hurricane season is coming to an end, the lasting effects of Hurricane Helene and Milton will be remembered for seasons to come. This memory will hopefully encourage people to prepare more for these storms to keep their families and themselves safe from this scary-- but impending-- reality.
On March 22nd, Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, announced that she is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer. She shared this news to the public through a recorded video message.
For an extensive period of time, the Princess of Wales has kept out of the media, causing much speculation and conspiracy as to her whereabouts. A little over a week ago, Kate shared the reason for her absence. In January, she underwent “major abdominal surgery in London” for a condition that was thought to be non-cancerous. After the procedure, cancer was discovered and Kate began chemotherapy treatments under the advice of her medical team.
One major reason that the royal family has kept this shocking news a secret is so that they could process it and handle it on their own time. Kate shared that "... it has taken us time to explain everything to George (10), Charlotte (8) and Louis (5) in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok." Kate reassures the viewers that Prince William is aiding her in her treatment, and she is thankful for him along with her followers. However, she requests privacy during this difficult time. "At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone," Kate shared.
On March 14, SpaceX successfully launched their Starship vehicle from Boca Chica, Texas. This rocket was the third in the Starship line and was the first to successfully exit the Earth's atmosphere as the first and second Starships exploded within the first couple minutes of flight.
This third vehicle marks many new achievements for the Starship line of rockets. During this mission, SpaceX was able to reach their targeted speed goals required for orbit, although they did not actually enter orbit. Additionally, SpaceX was able to test a new layload hatch door mechanism that also proved successful.
Although the most recent Starship rocket was able to exit the atmosphere, it unfortunately experienced a few mishaps upon re-entry. The engines entered a coasting phase during re-entry, which they did not return from. Because of this, the vehicle missed its intended crash spot and ended up in the Gulf of Mexico instead.
Looking towards the future, the Starship is set to replace SpaceX’s current vehicle, the Falcon 9. As of now, the Falcon 9 is being used to shuttle astronauts to the International Space Station, which is a responsibility that the Starship will most likely inherit as well. Additionally, the Starship will also be used in the upcoming NASA Artemis Mission to the moon.
At 9 pm on March 7th, 2024, current president Joe Biden entered the house floor in the United States capital to give his yearly State of the Union speech. With this speech, Biden was speaking to congress and fulfilling his constitutional duty to update congress on the state of the union, but also speaking to other government officials, United States citizens, and the world. He spoke about some of the things that were going well in the country, but also some issues that needed to be addressed. He also shared his plans for these issues.
There were a few notable attendees that Biden addressed during his speech. One of the notable attendees was Kate Cox, who was denied abortion in the state of Texas, even for an infertile embryo. She ended up leaving Texas to seek treatment. Biden used Cox as an example of why abortion should be allowed. Another notable person in attendance was Shawn Fain, the president of the United Auto Workers union. Fain recently endorsed Biden, and helped Biden make the point of his support of unions. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of Sweden also attended, as Sweden just ended their decades of neutrality with their alliance to NATO, officially joining the morning before Biden’s speech.
As Biden entered the chamber, he slowly made his way down the aisle, greeting and taking selfies with many of the officials who were in attendance. He began his speech by saying that even though the state of the union was very good, there were issues that should be addressed.
One of the first things that was brought up was that democracy was under attack. He explained how Putin invading Ukraine could lead to Russia invading even more countries and potentially destroying democracy. Biden highly suggested sending money and resources, but no US troops, to Ukraine so that they could defend against Russia. He felt that if we stood together and against Putin, democracy would prevail.
Biden also brought up the current popular issue of reproductive freedom. He felt that the overturning of Roe v. Wade was wrong, and that laws should be put in place to reinstate it. Biden thought that Women should have reproductive freedom to do what they want with their bodies and have the support and resources to do it.
He went on to address how the economy is currently doing in the United States. Biden announced that the economy is at a great point, potentially even record breakingly good. He included comments about low unemployment, small businesses, health insurance, and some of his plans to continue to make the economy better.
Throughout the rest of his speech, Biden described a variety of other topics. Some of these topics and issues included prescriptions drugs and healthcare costs, education, taxes and the federal deficit, and the war in Gaza. For Biden and the democratic party, this speech was very important to make them look good with the election coming up this November. Biden did his best to show that he was doing good things and could continue if he got voted in for another 4 years.
On January 25, 2024, Kenneth Smith became the first man in the United States to be executed by means of nitrogen gas. After much controversy, the second nitrogen gas execution has been imposed by a judge, with a date yet to be set.
This type of execution, formally known as nitrogen hypoxia, is when the body uptakes so much nitrogen that oxygen intake is depleted. According to Abraham Bonowitz, the director of the anti-death penalty group Death Penalty Action, “It should be called execution by suffocation.” During the execution, the inmate being put to death is strapped to a gurney while pure nitrogen is pumped through a breathing mask until the inmate dies.
Kenneth Smith, 58, was convicted of the murder of Elizabeth Sennett in 1988. He was one of three men hired by Sennett’s preacher husband to kill her. In November of 2022, Smith survived his first set execution, which was intended to be by lethal injection. The executioners failed to detect a vein for hours. Alabama officials decided that execution by nitrogen hypoxia would be the next route for Smith. Contrasting claims have come out about this decision, with some arguing that Smith was against this method of execution and even “terrified” of it, while others claim that Smith himself suggested.
On that fateful January 25, Smith underwent the typical pre-execution routine: being led into the chamber and strapped down by prison officials, and being anointed by his spiritual advisor Reverend Jeff Hood. Witnesses included numerous reporters and Elizabeth Sennett’s family and friends. Once the gas began flowing, Smith remained conscious and noticeably convulsed and gasped in the search of air for minutes on end. By 8:08 p.m. Smith had been reported to have stopped breathing, and by 8:15 p.m. the curtains to the chamber had closed.
Relatives of Sennett informed the press that they were not celebrating, but were more so relieved that the execution had finally happened after all these years. Smith’s wife, who married him in 2021 while he was in prison, painfully shared, “Tonight, I watched my husband jerk and convulse and gasp for air for at least 10 minutes.” She specifically called out the lack of humanity in the reporters witnessing the execution, since it seemed that all they cared about was recording the moment. After the execution, one of Smith’s sons and one of Sennett’s sons actually shared an embrace, as Mr. Sennett told him, “You had nothing to do with it.”
Now, Alan Eugene Miller, 59, is set to be the next convict executed by nitrogen gas. In 1999, Miller shot and killed three people in Birmingham. Miller also survived a previous execution attempt like Smith in September of 2022. After the violent and traumatic death of Smith, the request for an execution date is still unfulfilled. According to a lawsuit from another death row inmate, “The results of the first human experiment are now in and they demonstrate that nitrogen gas asphyxiation is neither quick nor painless, but agonizing and painful.”
During the early hours of Saturday morning on January 27th, onlookers reported witnessing a vehicle drive off a Virginia Beach pier.
When emergency services arrived at the scene, divers could not enter the water to locate the completely sunken car due to the harsh water conditions. Instead, they used sonar detection, which uses sound waves to find objects beneath the ocean surface. The police stated that the vehicle was between 17 and 20 feet underwater.
On Sunday afternoon, a private diving team attempted to locate the car but ultimately retreated due to the consistently dangerous water. During this attempt, some salvage equipment was damaged.
Sgt. Sergeant Brian Ricardo has explained one main reason for postponing the entering of the water: "Generally, because it is a crime scene, we want to leave it encapsulated as best we can. Because when you open up that portal to the ocean, we're going to lose evidence. And that's what we don't really want to do, is lose evidence." He has noted that if the risk of losing evidence has to be taken, then it will.
A video taken underwater pictures the vehicle as rocking with the current, upside down, posing an even larger threat to divers than before. At the time that the video was taken, ocean current levels were four times higher than the safety limit for the divers. Authorities have reported that no license plate information could be observed. The recovery operation was held off until the conditions were suitable for diving.
Police have stated that "The goal of this mission remains to safely retrieve the vehicle, reunite any & all occupants with their loved ones, & maintain the integrity of all evidence." Later, police were notified of a missing person’s case that possessed some similarities to the case at hand, however, no conclusions could be drawn until the vehicle was recovered.
On Tuesday, February 6, the police released that the missing person’s case brought to them was indeed the person inside the car. The motivation of the unnamed 57 year-old man is unknown, but authorities believe his actions were deliberate. This incident has shone a light on mental health issues in the surrounding community.
As the US Department of Education continues to report more and more delays with the FAFSA form, college students and families are starting to sweat.
Since the announcement of the new and improved form, there has been nothing but turmoil for those trying to fill it out. With the original release date of October 1st getting pushed back to the end of December 2023, college students have a very limited amount of time to collect all the information needed. Although the new FAFSA is shorter, it is still time consuming, especially for incoming college freshmen.
Additionally, the delays in the process have caused more delays to trickle down. Incoming freshmen are having a difficult time choosing a school to go to because they don’t have their full financial aid package yet. This is pushing back decisions of students and making some schools nervous about the time crunch.
Finally, FAFSA does not include a lot of factors previously taken into consideration before, including the sibling discount. Now, students with siblings also in college are not considered when determining financial aid eligibility. The form is solely focused on the income and assets of the person applying for financial aid and of their parents. Little thought is going into the other aspects of a person’s financial needs.
Although there are many problems with the new FAFSA form, there are benefits, one including the reduced length. It is much easier and faster to accomplish, allowing for easier and faster usage in the future. There was also a large expansion in financial aid eligibility, so more students will qualify for aid.
With the headache of the new FAFSA form comes hope for the future. There is a strong belief that this form will be extremely beneficial in the future when delays don’t occur and the form becomes faster to review.
On Thursday, December 28th, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released from prison. She was serving a 10 year sentence for killing her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, in 2015. She completed 85 percent of her sentence before being released. This was not your run-of-the-mill murder, though.
Dee Dee Blanchard suffered from a unique mental illness called “Munchausen syndrome by proxy,” which means she imposed fake illnesses onto her daughter. When Gypsy was only a baby, Dee Dee claimed her daughter had sleep apnea and needed treatment. This eventually evolved into false claims of leukemia and muscular dystrophy, forcing Gypsy to use a wheelchair and feeding tube.
Dee Dee was able to get away with these claims because she would switch doctors as soon as one began to ask too many questions. Additionally, she used Hurricane Katrina as an explanation for missing medical documents, when they actually did not exist. As soon as Gypsy was old enough to speak, her mother taught her to not offer up any personal information at doctors appointments.
Gypsy spent her entire childhood under the assumption that she was gravely ill, when she really wasn't. Often, her mother would simply lie to caregivers about Gypsy’s symptoms, or she would give her certain medications that would induce illness. Dee Dee also shaved Gypsy's hair, forced her to use a breathing machine while she slept, and made her undergo multiple unnecessary surgeries.
Around the time she was 19, Gypsy became slightly aware of the abuse she was undergoing. She joined an online dating site where she met Nicholas Godejohn. She told him about what she was going through and eventually asked him to kill Dee Dee so they could be together. In June of 2015, he came to her house at night and stabbed Dee Dee while Gypsy waited in a different room. The two were found a few days later in Godejohn’s apartment.
When the case was taken to trial, Gypsy’s lawyer was able to get her a plea deal, allowing her to serve 85 percent of her sentence, while Godejohn was found guilty of murder in the first degree and sentenced to life in prison.
Now that she is out of prison, Gypsy says that she is happy she got out of that situation, but not happy her mother is dead. It was only after her mother’s death that she realized just how healthy she really was.
Gypsy has since appeared as a guest on Dr. Phil. A Hulu series, as well as a HBO documentary, have been created based on the events of her life.
Actor Andre Braugher died last Monday, December 12th, at 61 years old. His cause of death was recently reported to be lung cancer. He is survived by his wife (Ami Brabson), his two sons, his brother, and his mother.
Andre Braugher is best known for his roles as a detective and police captain, respectively, in television shows Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Mr. Braugher is also known for his roles in Kojak, Hack, Gideon’s Crossing, Men of a Certain Age, and The Good Fight.
Mr. Braugher was born in Chicago on July 1, 1962. He graduated from Stanford University with a mathematics degree, since his father disagreed with his intentions of becoming an actor, and then attended the Juilliard School to study drama. His first acting role was in the movie Glory, which follows the first Black regiment in the Union Army during the Civil War. Some other movies that Andre Braugher had a role in include Get on the Bus (1996), Poseidon (2006), and Salt (2010). He played the former executive of The Times in She Said, which is about the exposé of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual abuse. In 1997, Mr. Braugher was awarded an Obie Award for his role in Henry V. He proved to be a great actor throughout his career, especially on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street.
The executive producer on Homicide noted that Mr. Braugher was the “quarterback of the team.” After playing stoic and heroic police officers for much of his career, Braugher questioned the portrayal of these kinds of officers on television, especially during the Black Lives Matter movement. “It’s almost like the air you breathe or the water that you swim in. It’s hard to see. But because there are so many cop shows on television, that’s where the public gets its information about the state of policing. Cops breaking the law to quote, ‘defend the law,’ is a real terrible slippery slope.” Mr. Braugher took action to bring light to his concerns in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. His character in this show was gay, but he acted in a manner for his “sexual orientation [to be] merely a matter of fact, not a source of amusement” (Ives).
Mr. Braugher earned an Emmy in 1998 for his role in Homicide, and another in 2006 for his role in Thief. Andre Braugher’s legacy goes beyond his accumulation of awards, however. He will be known as a man who used his talent to shed light on the issues he saw prevalent in today’s society, of course, while making the audience feel.

In the midst of the Israel-Hamas War, certain businesses have become the targets of boycotts, due to claims that they have in some way supported Israel, or caused further harm to Palestine. The two corporations at the height of these boycotts are McDonald’s and Starbucks.
Both Starbucks and McDonald’s have denied their affiliation with the Israeli government, but the boycotts have nevertheless continued. The McDonald’s boycott began when news was reported of a McDonald's owner in Israel claiming that his restaurants would send free meals to some of Israel’s military and hospitals. Newsweek has reported that over 100,000 meals have already been donated to these causes. McDonald’s responded to this news, saying, “We are dismayed by the disinformation and inaccurate reports regarding our position in response to the conflict in the Middle East.” It has also denied any alleged support to either side in the conflict, along with denying consent to any action taken by its Developmental Licensee business partners.
Boycotting Starbucks began when the Starbucks Workers United posted “Solidarity with Palestine” after the October 7th Hamas attacks. Lynne Fox, the president of the union, stated that the post was written by one person without the approval of anyone else in the union. Now, both Starbucks and SWU face lawsuits from each other. Protests are taking place across the world, like at McDonald’s in Lebanon, Turkey, and Melbourne, Australia. Some students from Howard University gathered to write messages outside of a Starbucks advocating for Palestine.
Contrary to viral posts, these boycotts will likely not have a very significant impact on the corporations. However, some believe that this is a start of a movement that will have a lasting impact over time.
Lewistown, Maine, is home to Bates College, a prestigious liberal arts college with notable alumni such as Robert Kennedy, among hundreds of other powerful and trailblazing figures in American politics and media. Lewistown is praised for its natural beauty, seclusion, and safeness. Now, students, their families, and Lewistown residents are left in shock and disbelief after an active shooter went on a tirade in two separate Lewistown locations on October 25, 2023, leaving 18 dead and 13 others injured. The first location where this mass shooting took place was a bowling alley, where a children's league was playing, the second was a local Bar and Grill.
The suspected gunman, Robert Card, was said to experience paranoia and psychotic episodes frequently. Card was released from a psychiatric facility on August 3, 2023. At his residence in Bowdoin, Maine, only a 30-minute drive from Lewistown, the local police tried to carry out a welfare check on Card requested by concerned relatives of his. They unsuccessfully attempted to contact Card on September 15 and 16, who was reportedly not home and not responsive to their attempts to contact him. They eventually would retreat.
Just a month after this unfortunate negligence by the Maine police, Card is suspected to have gone on a shooting spree in Lewistown. The victims of this shooting are as follows: Tricia C. Asselin, 53; Peyton Brewer-Ross, 40; William Frank Brackett, 48; Thomas Ryan Conrad, 34; Michael R. Deslauriers II, 51; Maxx A. Hathaway, 35; Bryan M. MacFarlane, 41; Keith D. Macneir, 64; Ronald G. Morin, 55; Joshua A. Seal, 36; Arthur Fred Strout, 42; Stephen M. Vozzella, 45; Lucille M. Violette, 73; Robert E. Violette, 76; Joseph Lawrence Walker, 57; Jason Adam Walker, 51; William A. Young, 44; and Aaron Young, 14. This shooting has instilled outrage in Americans across the country, furthering their fear that nowhere is truly safe without proper gun control, a topic that has sparked controversy in our country for decades.
As of now, the FBI, the Federal Government, and the Maine Government are taking action to figure out the exact facts of this case and combat the epidemic of mass shootings experienced in the United States.
Panera Bread is famous for being a family-friendly chain restaurant, where you can hang out and have a coffee or get a quick and nutritious meal. Despite its excellent reputation across the country, Panera Bread is facing a lawsuit amongst scrutiny from the public and customers.
In September 2022, Sarah Katz, a 21-year-old University of Pennsylvania student passed away after drinking a Panera Charged Lemonade. One of Panera’s menu staples is their Charged Lemonade, a drink usually associated with being enjoyed by young children, but Panera’s lemonade contains 390 mg of caffeine, and 124 g of sugar in a large (30 oz) serving. This amount of caffeine is equivalent to four cups of black coffee, nine cans of Coke, or five Red Bulls. Katz’s family is now suing the company, claiming that consumers are not being properly informed of the amount of caffeine in Panera’s Charged Lemonade, and proposing to take the drinks off the shelves for good.
Sarah Katz had a heart condition called long QT syndrome type 1, a disease that interferes with the heart’s electrical activity and is known to cause arrhythmias. Her family claims that this condition was managed by medication and that Sarah “avoided energy drinks based on her doctors’ recommendation,” according to the legal complaint filed by her family.
Although her family and friends remember Sarah as being very vigilant and well-versed in medicine, and knowledgeable of her condition, the lawsuit faces some criticism. On Panera’s website, the Charged Lemonade is advertised as “the ultimate energy drink,” but conversely is served directly next to non-caffeinated Panera beverages and fountain drinks. Panera claims that customers are well aware of the amount of caffeine in the drinks because of the labels, stating the amount of caffeine and calories per serving, on the drink dispensers. Although this is true, many customers don't put this amount of caffeine into context, truly understanding how much 390 mg of caffeine really is.
Due to this high-profile lawsuit, concerning one of the most popular chain restaurants in the U.S., the FDA has stepped in. A spokesperson has said “The FDA is saddened to hear of the passing of a consumer and as always, takes seriously reports of illnesses or injury from regulated products,” and “At this point, we are gathering information about this event,” they added. “The agency monitors the marketplace of FDA-regulated products and takes action as appropriate, including collaborating with the Federal Trade Commission regarding marketing claims.”
While Panera is still in the midst of this lawsuit, we do not yet know how much trouble the company will be in, but they have claimed that they will start trying to advertise the amount of caffeine in the drinks more emphatically.
The Writers Guild of America has finally come to a deal with the studios of Hollywood to end one of the longest strikes the city has ever experienced.
Members of the WGA (a union that advocates for the rights of writers) have been on strike since May 2nd due to the decrease in writer-salary and have had difficult time finding writing opportunities because of television show seasons becoming shorter for streaming purposes. This has created hardships for writers making a living for themselves, especially in costly cities to live in like Hollywood. One anonymous studio executive claimed that “The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses” (James & Lee, 2023). This strike has caused the writing and production of movies like Dune: Part Two to be pushed back. In mid-July, actors began to strike along with the writers, and are represented by The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). This is a union that advocates for the rights of media professionals. The WGA has been joined in its efforts by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Teamsters (AMPTP).
After three months of no attempt to come to an agreement, the WGA and Hollywood studios met, but failed to reach a deal. Since then, no progress has been made, until Wednesday 27th. A tentative deal has been struck between the Hollywood studios and the WGA, which will provide writers with more protections (to be released). However, SAG-AFTRA still has yet to reach a deal with the Hollywood studios.
On Wednesday October 25th, the House of Representatives elected Mike Johnson to be Speaker of the House. This decision was made after a 21-day stalemate that effectively shut the House down. Johnson, the representative from Louisiana, was voted in unanimously as a compromise after the long fight between the moderate and further right Republicans for the position. Following his election, Johnson said “the people’s house is back in business,” with his first bill on the floor happening at 5:35 p.m.
But, why is this important?
The House of Representatives makes fast-paced decisions on bills about current legislative issues. This has been especially prevalent with the Israel-Hamas War. The decision of whether or not America was going to support Israel in the war had to be put on hold with the absence of a Speaker of the House. Other issues, including the continuing Russo-Ukrainian War and the government spending bill, came to a grinding halt. Thankfully, now that a new Speaker of the House has been elected, one-third of our government can now function again.
As of September 12th, the Food and Drug Administration panel concluded that the key ingredient in many decongestants, phenylephrine, doesn’t actually help to relieve congestion. They found that little of the drug actually reaches the nose when taking the medicine orally, and is no better than taking a placebo. The FDA will later vote to remove these medicines, such as Sudafed PE, NyQuill, DayQuill, and Benadryl, from shelves entirely.
Phenylephrine has been around for 60 years, becoming most popular in the early 2000s when other drugs containing a more potent decongestant, pseudoephedrine, were moved behind the counter. This is because pseudoephedrine is a main ingredient in methamphetamine, a highly addictive stimulant. Besides not working when taken orally, phenylephrine is also known to cause harmful side effects such as headaches, insomnia, and increased blood pressure. While you may continue to be stuffy when taking these medicines, the other ingredients will still help the other symptoms of a cold. But, if you are in desperate need of a decongestant, nasal and sinus researcher and physician Michael Platt suggests a nasal spray. Similarly, pseudoephedrine continues to prove helpful, though an ID is required for purchase.
On Saturday, October 7th, a Palestinian Islamist militant group called Hamas launched a full-fledged attack on Israel, threatening them by air, sea and land. This surprise attack left more than 1,200 Israelians dead. In response, Israel declared war on the militant group. As Hamas retreated into Gaza, the Israeli government launched an airborne attack, killing 1,799 Palestinians and injuring at least 7,388. The militant group is said to have taken over 150 hostages as they shelter in the city, and claims there will be public executions if airstrikes continue.
Today, Friday October 13, marks the seventh day of this conflict, and the death toll continues to rise, with a likelihood of more. The Israeli government began a siege of Gaza on Monday, promising to return electricity, water, and food supplies once the hostages have been released. If the siege proves unsuccessful, the Israeli government is prepared to begin a group operation in hopes of rescuing the hostages.
Israel also faces the threat of attacks from other countries, as they are also technically declared war with two of their neighboring countries, Lebanon and Syria. American leaders have been doing what they can to help relieve some of the humanitarian needs of the country, but not much can be done.
On Sunday evening September 17th nine teens escaped the Abraxas Academy Juvenile Detention Center. Right before the nine kids escaped there was a riot. These teens were ages 15 to 17 and they overpowered two female employees and took their keys. They then used the keys to get out of the facility and then crawled under exterior fences to escape. This event was very alarming after Danilo Cavalcante escaped jail only a couple of days before. Monday morning on September 18th is when the teens were caught. Early Monday morning four of the teens were captured after knocking on a homeowner's door. Boehm said during a news conference about the case, "They were done, they were tired, they were cold. They basically gave up." This is probably the reason those four kids knocked on a homeowner's door.
Five of the other teens stole a vehicle and later four of those kids were captured while being pursued by the police. The last teenager ran off through a field and got captured soon after the other four. All of the teenagers ended up getting captured only 4 miles from the Juvenile Detention Center. Trooper Dave Boehm said, "I don't know that 15 to 17-year-olds have the resiliency to not have to go back." Boehm was comparing these teens to Danilo Cavalcante basically saying that since he would be having a life sentence to jail he was doing anything he could to not go back to jail, but these kids don't have a life sentence so they didn't put up as much of a fight. But, there is no need to fear since all nine kids are back in the Juvenile Detention Center and Danilo Cavalcante is also back behind bars. So please just try to make good decisions everyone, so you don't have to go to jail or detention.
On September 15, a one-year-old child at a nursery in New York City was killed by fentanyl poisoning. Nicholas Dominici and three other children were admitted to a hospital and given Narcan, a drug intended to reverse the opioid overdose. Sadly for Nicholas, it was too late. Investigators found one kilo of fentanyl, enough to kill 500,000 people, under the children’s sleeping mats that day.
The owner of the nursery, Grei Mendez and her husband now face charges of narcotics possession and life in prison if convicted. After Nicholas was found ill, Grei called her husband several times before calling the police and he then removed several shopping bags from the building. Authorities are still trying to locate him, but have found a trapdoor in the building containing more fentanyl.
America is under its fourth wave of fentanyl crisis. The nursery was inspected earlier in September but no violations were identified since the inspections were not looking for fentanyl. With as little as a tenth of a fingernail to kill an adult and over 66% of drug overdoses related to fentanyl, perhaps this is something to consider adding to an inspection list and America’s radar.

On May 6, 2023, the coronation of King Charles III was held in Westminster Abbey. Most of the traditional customs reappeared, with a couple of changes.
The coronation of the king has always been a somewhat religious event, with the Church of England being classified as Protestant with Anglican origins. During this coronation, however, the archbishop acknowledged many religions in an attempt “to foster an environment in which people of all faiths may live freely” (Kottasová). He also asked the British citizens and others to join him in a pledge of allegiance to the king. Some people took this invitation as a demand; in response to this, the Church of England revised the invitation. Another “first time” for a coronation occurred when Charles prayed out loud.
Camilla was also crowned as queen after Charles was officially king. Many elite guests attended the coronation, with United States’ First Lady Jill Biden being one of them, as President Joe Biden did not attend. After the coronation, King Charles III and Queen Camilla rode back to Buckingham Palace in a grand parade. The media noted that Prince Harry was not present with the royal family after the coronation, as he is no longer a “working royal” (Kottasová).
On May 3, 2023, there was a mass shooting in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia, United States. There were five people shot at a Northside Hospital facility. Shortly after, authorities announced the suspect as Deion Patterson. He was arrested and charged with one count of murder and four counts of aggravated assault.
The suspect Deion Patterson had an appointment at the Northside Hospital in Atlanta and opened fire after arriving. The attack was reported to have lasted about two minutes. After the attack Patterson went to a gas station. He was arrested after 911 calls nearby.
38 year old Amy St. Pierre was shot and killed at the scene by Patterson. There were four other women who were shot but survived and were hospitalized. Alesha Hollinger was shot in the face, Jazzmin Daniel was shot in the abdomen multiple times, Lisa Glynn was also shot in the abdomen, and Georgette Witow was shot in the arm.
Deion Patterson is faced with four counts of aggravated assault and one count of murder. He was booked into the Fulton County Rice Street Jail.
The Met Gala is an annually held event with the goal of raising funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. Each year the Gala has a theme based on what is currently on exhibition within the museum itself. Said theme is chosen by Anna Wintour, who is also in charge of approving all the A-list celebrities who are to walk the carpet in May of every year.
Usually, these theme’s spark great debate across the internet, though this year’s notably more so. This year's theme, “In Honor of Karl”, was dedicated to the late German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. While it cannot be denied that he had a profound impact on the fashion industry, pulling Chanel into modernity, he was also known for making his controversial remarks heard.
What is it that he said, though, that has made him so disliked? Well, here’s a quick rundown:
In 2018, in an interview he claimed he was ‘fed up’ with the #METOO movement (a movement against sexual abuse/harrassment and rape culture). Many of the women speaking out in this movement were models, who had been assaulted in the workplace. He defended his point by claiming “If you don’t want your pants pulled about, don’t become a model! Join a nunnery, there’ll always be a place for you in the convent”.
He spoke out against same-sex couples in 2010, claiming it was unnatural. While later in 2013, he would show support for same-sex marriage, he followed up the display of support by claiming he wouldn’t want to see same-sex couples be allowed to adopt.
Throughout his career, Lagerfeld was openly fatphobic, claiming that ‘fat people’ (more specifically anyone who fell above a size 0-2) should strive to be able to wear high end fashion the way it was meant to be worn. He would only go further by critiquing designers who pushed for size equality.
In 2017, Lagerfeld made his feelings on immigrants very clear after Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that Germany would be opening their borders to Syrian migrants during the refugee crisis. He would go on to share an anecdote, translated to “I know someone in Germany who took a young Syrian and after four days said: ‘The greatest thing Germany invented was the Holocaust’”.
Because of these contentious opinions, many celebrities have dressed in defiance, or even gone so far as to decline the invitation to this year's Gala. On the internet, many have differing opinions. Some feel Lagerfeld should have never been picked for the theme, subsequently putting him on a pedestal, the other arguing that there should be a line dividing art and the artist. Which do you agree with?
On April 4, in Manhattan, President Donald Trump heard the 34 felony charges against him, to which he pleaded not guilty. The charges were on the basis of Trump altering business records in order to appeal to voters in the 2016 election.
Multiple women claim to have had affairs with Trump, which he denied. The argument in this situation concerns the possibility of Trump paying these women hush money, specifically an order of $130,000. He altered business records multiple times to hide these business transactions that were illegal and harmful to his reputation as well.
After the arraignment, Trump attended an event with his supporters in Florida. Trump claimed, “I never thought anything like this could happen in America, never thought it could happen. The only crime that I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it.” Some Republicans argue that the prosecutors need to show that the altered business records hid a second crime that was not mentioned in the indictment in order to make their case.
Trump’s next hearing will be on December 4. This criminal case could be detrimental to his plan to run for president again in the 2024 election.
Jack Teixeria is a 21-year-old member of the 102nd Intelligence Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, who is believed to be behind a massive leak of U.S. government secrets that has exposed spying on allies and revealed the grim prospects for Ukraine’s war with Russia.
This started when a group on the platform Discord, got together to play some online games when a man called “OG”, or later known as Jack Teixeria, posted a message with strange acronyms and jargon. The words were unfamiliar, but one of the members explained that OG claimed to know secrets that the government withheld from regular people. Half of these members were located overseas such as post-Soviet countries.
A Discord member read these messages for months that appeared to be transcripts of classified intelligence documents that OG indicated he had brought home from his job on a military base. OG lectured his Discord members about these documents, world affairs, and secretive government operations. OG believed that the government hid horrible things from the public and truly is corrupt. An example of this is that OG believed they knew about the shooting at a Buffalo supermarket before it occurred, since law enforcement officials could argue then for increased funding.
After a while, OG was tired of writing these documents by hand so they began posting hundreds of photos of the documents themselves that have been steadily spilling into public view recently, disrupting U.S. foreign policy and irritating American allies. Some of these photos featured detailed charts of battlefield conditions in Ukraine and satellite images of the aftermath of Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian electrical facilities. They also showed that the U.S. was keeping close tabs on its allies such as concerns expressed by South Korea's leaders about sending ammunition to Ukraine.
The government wanted to find out who “OG '' was, so they asked his second account member who told them OG’s real name and other information. The FBI arrested Teixeria on April 13th and OG’s last words to his fellow players were to “keep low and delete any information that could possibly relate to him”.

On February 1st, 2023, a mysterious white balloon was spotted 60,000 feet over Montana. People were clueless about what the balloon was until its path was tracked, revealing it launched from China. It traveled all the way across Canada and the U.S, seemingly unnoticed until reaching Montana. Its final destination was off the coast of South Carolina on February 4th, where it was shot down by an F-22 Raptor. The remnants of the balloon were retrieved, which confirmed the use of spyware.
As the balloon made its journey over the sky of the United States, it was photographed and reported many times. The military made multiple flybys of the balloon, which led to original beliefs that it was used for reconnaissance. Even after the balloon was destroyed and wreckage was recovered, China denied that it was used for spying, claiming it was a weather balloon which went off course. This has caused tension between the U.S and China.
After the first balloon was starting to lose popularity on the news, three more objects were spotted over Canada and the U.S. These were seen from February 10th to 12th, and were shot down over Canada, Alaska, and the Great Lakes of the U.S. All these objects caused quite a stir, especially being that none of them had discernable spyware.
President Biden spoke to the public about the incident. He admitted that the first one was used by China to survey the U.S, but the other three were likely used by private corporations for their own intents. Some are still skeptical of Biden’s remarks. Many believe that China is at large, while many think all of this fear is over nothing. And then there are a few who believe that aliens are the real spies. Who knows?
On February 6, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria at around 4:15 am local time. This earthquake was caused by decades of movement along the Anatolian and Arabian Plates that built up tension along the fault. This ultimately caused the initial quake to strike at a depth of 11 miles, which is relatively shallow for an earthquake. The strength of this earthquake has resulted in thousands of aftershocks, some almost as powerful as the original quake.
It is estimated that over 50,000 people were killed due to the earthquake, 44,218 from Turkey alone. Over 500,000 people have been evacuated from the disaster area in Turkey, 173,000 buildings have been reported as collapsed or severely damaged, and more than 1.9 million people are staying in temporary shelters, hotels, and public facilities. Many survivors are still left homeless in freezing winter temperatures with little access to basic necessities.
Around 240,000 rescuers are continuing to work to help the people affected by the quake and search for survivors. Dozens of countries have sent rescue teams to help Turkish authorities. A rebel-held region in northwestern Syria was asked to open up more border crossing points to allow more aid in.
Most successful rescues occur within 24 hours of the initial earthquake. However, after 10 days trapped under rubble in Turkey, two men were found alive by rescue teams. The rescue of these two men were followed by the rescue of a 13-year-old boy 12 days after the earthquake.
Donations and rescue teams are still needed in Turkey and Syria. Many people are without shelter and other necessities. Aid has not reached some of the disaster areas, especially areas in Northwestern Syria. More aid is essential for the survival of the people in Turkey and Syria.
Are you in need of another access to coffee and treats when you are on the go? If so, it may interest you that plans to establish a brand new Starbucks in Exeter Township are currently being discussed by the Exeter Township Board of Supervisors.
The proposed location for the Starbucks is the former Mid Penn Bank, in the Exeter Commons shopping mall. On December 19th, 2022, the board discussed how the building will be refurbished for their needs, but not destroyed, among other developing plan technicalities. One big difference between the proposed establishment and the preexisting Starbucks is that this one will have a drive-thru, hopefully making everyone’s coffee trips a little more convenient.
Some townspeople did have concerns about the possible traffic backup that can occur in popular places like these. Jennifer Holden, a Starbucks representative, responded, “Except for the 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. hour, there was less than a 5% chance that traffic would back up beyond the 15 spaces in the drive-thru queue.” This was pertaining to the research she had completed concerning the neighboring Starbucks locations in the area. On December 27th, six waiver requests for the proposed Starbucks were approved.
Although no date for the beginning of refurbishment or opening has been released, make sure to keep an eye out for more news regarding Exeter Township’s new Starbucks!
On New Year’s Day, a gas explosion caused the collapse of 2 houses and damaged over 40 others, as well as injuring at least five people. Four of the five people were released a day later, with cuts and bruises, but one person remains in the intensive care unit.
The incident remains under investigation, but appears to have been caused by a natural gas leak, yet the gas company, PGW, claims that they received no calls complaining about gas odors. There have been other issues with gas leaks in the area, though. In 1999 a gas explosion leveled an entire corner in the area, and it remains empty to this day.
The 118th Congress of the United States began on January 3rd, 2023. Republicans now hold the majority in the House of Representatives, and the Democrats remain as the Majority Party in the Senate.
When it came time to elect the Speaker of the House, the Republican party seemed to struggle. Kevin McCarthy seemed to be a shoo in, but when election time came, the GOP couldn’t seem to make a decision.
McCarthy managed to win the position after 15 votes, which hasn’t happened in 164 years. The struggle McCarthy faced to simply win the position may foreshadow the difficulties that lie ahead.
On June 7, 2021, a new Alzheimer’s treatment received an accelerated approval from the FDA. The drug responsible for this treatment is called Aducanumab or Aduhelm™. This is a great scientific breakthrough in the treatment of Alzheimer's.
Although it is not a cure, Aducanumab will likely address the underlying biology to this disease. The purpose of this treatment is to reduce the beta-amyloid plaques which are thought to be the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. This will not cure the individual, but it will give them extended time to be an active part of society and spend more time with loved ones.
The drug does not prevent the body from making beta-amyloid plaques, but it does reduce the amount produced. This reduction of the beta-amyloid plaques will slow the cell death in tissue damage in the brain. As a result, memory, thinking, and learning behaviors will not be lost as quickly. This treatment will not restore any memories of behaviors that have already been lost.
With Aducanumab, patients can live longer, happier lives with an active role in society. They will be able to keep their memories and spend time with their loved ones for longer.
On Sunday, November 27, 2022, Hawaii’s Mauna Loa erupted for the first time since 1984. Many researchers, tourists, and Hawaiian natives gathered to spectate this great phenomenon.
The United States Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory team, or USGS HVO for short, had been monitoring Mauna Loa’s activity since Kilauea erupted in 2018. In the late summer, significant data from ground movement near the volcano pointed towards a possible eruption. As expected, Mauna Loa erupted months later and the HVO was prepared.
Viewers flocked to view the breathtaking lava flow and many observed glass strands called Pele’s hair. These filaments can occur from basaltic lava, and are mostly harmless to humans, unless they are inhaled or make contact with skin or eyes. While being somewhat of a pest, Pele’s hair can actually be a great source of information regarding the makeup of the volcanoes that they originate from. From the strands’ chemistry, the temperature of the lava can be determined. Factors like temperature help to tell whether or not the eruption is highly dangerous. Pele’s hair can also explain where the magma is sourced in the Earth and what could follow the eruption.
Now, researchers claim that the eruption will be coming to an end due to volcanic gas and lava numbers dropping. Mauna Loa’s spectacular eruption has captured the attention of people from all over the world, and will be an event that Native Hawaiians won’t quickly forget!
Kanye West, also known as Ye, has been all over all the news recently. Not only has he announced he will be running for president in the 2024 election, but he has also been criticized for his continually anti-Semitic tendencies.
On December 2nd, Ye posted a swastika on his Twitter account in order to jump start his presidential campaign. This led to him being immediately banned from Twitter. On November 22nd, Kanye West had dinner with past president Donald Trump and well known white Supremacist Nick Fuentes, further damaging his public image.
These two events have led Ye to lose many partnerships with prominent companies and there have also been recent petitions to remove his music from streaming platforms
Concluding on October 27th, 2022, Elon Musk’s 44 billion dollar deal to buy 9.1 percent of Twitter made him the largest shareholder of the company. Before closing the deal, though, Musk had a hard time deciding if he really wanted the company and all the responsibility that would surely follow.
Once Musk took over Twitter, he quickly started making changes, firing top executives and claiming that “the bird is freed”. For a long time, twitter has been known to censor some of their accounts and let only what they chose be said. One of Musk's main goals is to combat this breach of the First Amendment and restore many of the accounts that had been banned.
Musk claims that this new acquisition was not with the goal of money in mind, rather to “help humans whom [he] loves”.
On December 18th, Musk posted a poll asking the people of Twitter whether or not he should continue as CEO of Twitter. The poll closed the following morning of the 19th, with 17 million people casting their vote, and 57.5% of them voting to remove him from his position. Musk claims he has not yet found a replacement as the company is on the decline and the new CEO would be a public figure of such a controversial business. Musk has expressed numerous times that Twitter is financially unstable. After the acquisition, a group of major companies stopped advertising on Twitter.
As of now, it is on track to lose 4 billion dollars a year, which makes it even harder to pass on leadership.
Prince William and his wife Kate have traveled to the U.S. this December, the first time in eight years, to showcase how they plan to adapt their own roles in society by supporting what they believe in. On December 14th, the Earthshot Prize Awards took place in Boston, Massachusetts. Five winners received around $1.12 million dollars to fund their solutions to climate change. William founded this prize back in 2020, with the hope of attracting smart minds to confront present climate challenges in our world. Annie Lennox, Billie Elilish, and Ellie Goulding performed at the event, and the winners were announced by Oscar winner Rami Malek, actress Shaliene Woodley, and Catherine O’Hara.
During their trip, the couple met with local indigenous leaders of Boston, President Biden, and Boston organizations working to solve its rising sea levels. Their three-day visit was jam-packed but very productive.
Prince William also met with former President Kennedy’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy, to pay tribute to her father with his moonshot speech in 1962. William is very inspired by Kennedy to achieve the believed “impossible” at the time and hopes to lead the world with Kate with that mindset so climate change can be solved in the future.

On May 14, 19-year-old Payton Gendron killed 10 Black people at Tops Friendly Market in Erie county. From all of his social media postings, it was known that his terrorist attack was racially motivated.
19-year-old Payton Gendron went to Tops Friendly Market on May 14 with a motive. “The rambling 180-page screed posted online invoked the racist theory that white people are intentionally being replaced and detailed a plot attack on black people in Buffalo, about 200 miles from Gendron’s home in Corklin, N.Y.” He declared himself a white supremacist and pledged to kill all black people. The following February 15, in court, the attacker pleaded guilty to the charges, authorities say that the shooting was caused by, “bigoted ideology and racist hatred.” Gendron was sentenced to domestic terrorist charges that carry a mandatory life sentence in prison without parole.
Family members and survivors are struggling greatly from this traumatic incident. Survivors are seeing therapists to help deal with their post-traumatic stress disorder and are experiencing great survivor’s guilt.
“Whitfield, a cancer survivor, compared his experience fighting that disease with America’s struggle to confront white supremacy.” He goes on to asking, “What is America going to do about the cancer of white supremacy?” Everheart, a family member of a survivor, talks about how violent and racist the attack was, and he voice showed no remorse.
Around November 24, 2022 ancient mummies with gold tongues were found in a cemetery near Cairo, Egypt that dates back to about 332 BC to 395 AC.
According to Artnews, “In some of the mummies’ mouths, a number of golden chips in the form of human tongues were found in a poor state of preservation.” It is believed that the tongues are removed during the embalming process and replaced with gold so they can communicate with the Egyptian god of the underworld, Osiris.
The bodies were also wrapped in gold underneath linen. Golden tongues were popular during the Greco-Roman period around 332 BC when Alexander the Great took over Egypt to 395 AD when the Roman Empire split into two.
Mummification is a method of embalming or treating the dead body. Egyptians remove the moisture from the body, drying it out, so it took longer to decay. In their religion, they believed that the body should be preserved in a life-like manner for as long as possible. They were so successful in doing so, we can look at a body that went through the mummification process and still have an idea of what that person looked like 3,000 years ago, when they were still alive. The process of mummification started around 2600 BCE, during the fourth and fifth dynasties, and lasted over 2,000 years into the Roman Period.
Several tombs that date back to 332 BC to 395 AC had gold in the shape of human tongues that were found at about 40 miles of Cairo, Egypt. They are still being analyzed. Excavation is still ongoing and not yet completed. Who knows what else they are going to find when they continue their excavation.

This fall we turned our clocks back, as we usually do, for, supposedly, the last time. The Sunshine Protection Act went through the Senate and will become effective on November 5, 2023. The act won’t be in effect until next year, so it seems that we will still have to spring forward one more time before Daylight Saving Time (DST) is no longer used in the United States.
So what is the difference between DST and standard time? Standard time is the standard time most places all over the world use normally. Daylight saving time is the cycle of turning the clocks forward one hour in the spring and back an hour in the fall. When the U.S. switches to only standard time, we will “fall back” and not “spring forward” in order to stay in standard time.
This could greatly affect the U.S. in many positive ways. It’s been shown that when we switch the clocks back and forth, most people are more likely to get into crashes, lose sleep (even though we gain an hour), and save energy due to the sun coming up earlier. The time change, and just driving in the dark morning in general, causes more crashes when we change the time compared to if we were to keep it standard time year round. In regards to sleep, when we change the clocks, yes we gain an hour of sleep, but our sleep schedules suffer in general as a whole. When we switch the clocks back and forth it takes adults, kids, and pets alike a lot of time to get their body’s adjusted to the sun coming up and going down at a different time. Switching the clocks causes so many issues that could, and will, be easily fixed when we switch to standard time all the time.
In general, everything about daylight savings time and standard time is very confusing. All that we need to know is that the time switch is going to stop next November and we will be in standard time.
On October 28th, Paul Pelosi, husband of the current Speaker of the House of Representatives was attacked inside of his own home in San Francisco, resulting in a skull fracture and several other serious injuries. Within that same day, the suspect, identified as David DePape, was arrested and sent to the hospital for the dislocated shoulder he suffered during arrest.
On October 31st, DePape was released from the hospital and incarcerated. His first court appearance was scheduled for November 1st. At his court appearance DePepe plead not guilty to the state level offenses and a new court date has been scheduled for December 14th. On November 9th, DePape was indicted for federal level charges including attempted kidnapping and assault, to which he pleads not guilty. His federal court date is scheduled for November 30th. With his charges combined, DePape faces the possibility of a maximum of 50 years in prison.
DePape claims his reasoning behind attacking the Pelosi household was to use Speaker Pelosi in order to gain access to another individual, though they have not yet been identified. Police also found a secondary target in their collected digital evidence, though they also have not yet been named.
Recently, many people, including the United States Supreme Court have been questioning the validity of Affirmative Action in College Admissions. Established in 1960, affirmative action is the concept of using a student’s background, including race and gender, as a consideration when accepting or rejecting applicants. Originally, it was designed to increase the amount of minorities attending schools they may have previously been rejected from.
A group of Asian American students attempted to sue Harvard University for unfair admission policies claiming that they were not accepted due to the fact they did not fit the affirmative action requirements. They claim that because they were not African Americans, and could therefore not fit the “quota,” they were unjustifiably denied admission. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Harvard saying there was no concrete proof that race was the reason for rejection.
A group called the Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) is suing both Harvard and the University of North Carolina for their unequal admissions programs. Due to the fact that Harvard is a private school and does not need to comply entirely with the Constitution, the SFFA is suing under Title VI. They are suing UNC under both Title VI and the Equal Protection Clause in Amendment 14.
If affirmative action requirements were to be overturned there could be some serious changes, The amount of minorities attending college may decline greatly. On the other hand, if affirmative action is left as it is, it's entirely possible that many qualified students will not get accepted into universities they deserve to attend.
The night of October 29th was a deadly and certainly a scary Halloween accident that occurred in South Korea. Halloween festivities were taking place at the country’s capital, Itaewon, where over 100,000 people were celebrating. The trouble started at 4 a.m. in a narrow alleyway outside of a subway station near some bars. At least 149 people were killed and an additional 150 people were injured. There were only 137 officers assigned that night and their only job was to look out for crime like theft and drug use; not to provide traffic and crowd control.
“130,000 passengers used the station in Itaewon on Saturday, compared with 96,000 per day during the Halloweeen weekend in 2019 and 60,000 to 80,000 per day during the Halloween weekends during the coronavirus pandemic”, stated The New York Times.
People went through the alleyway since they wanted to avoid the traffic of the subways, but this backfired for them. Hundreds of people were jammed, barely able to breathe, and nowhere to escape. Some people were yelling to push as they were going down a hill and the people in front of them were falling like dominoes.
Police are investigating the situation and are analyzing videos taken on surveillance cameras. Overall, the law enforcement and the organizers of this event were really underprepared for this post-Covid celebration. Hopefully they learn from this deadly mistake in the future.

Nearly two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain is still reeling from the effects. With her son declared as monarch, the country, and the rest of the world, wonder what direction he will take them in.
Queen Elizabeth II’s historic 70-year reign was the country’s longest. She experienced the last years of the British Empire, lived through WWII and the Cold War, worked with 15 Prime Ministers, and was the first-ever televised coronation. For the first time since 1952, the British people have had to say goodbye to their monarch.
The Queen’s death had a hard impact on the people, as she was the only monarch many knew, but officials and citizens from other countries are calling the monarchy itself into question with her passing. Despite being a historically long run, it can be defined by a plethora of scandals and controversies--the death of Princess Diana, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle leaving the royal family, and the connections to colonialism being the most profound and discussed issues of her reign. The connections and effects of colonialism are still prevalent to this day, with many countries recently gaining independence and 14 still part of the Commonwealth.
With the announcement of the Queen’s death, her son, Prince Charles, has been named King Charles III. Before his time as the reigning monarch, King Charles was a, and continues to be, speaker and activist for the climate crisis. With his official coronation scheduled for the 6th of May, people wait with bated breath for the changes that he will bring to the throne.
The Iranian protests have taken a lot of coverage from the news lately. Mahsa Amini was a woman in Iran who was arrested for the crime of not wearing a Hijab. On September 16, 2022, she died in police custody, with them saying she died of a heart attack. This unfortunate event led to the Iranian protests that are raging across the country right now.
To show resistance to the government, women in the country have begun to remove their headscarves in public. This goes against the Iranian law of wearing them in public, which has been there since 1979. Since then, there have been acts of suppression of the people: restricted internet access, beating, and arresting the protesters. These events have added fuel to the fire and the country is gaining support from around the world. Many are calling for this law to be removed, arguing that women should have the right to decide how they want to live. This ties to the ongoing war of bodily autonomy women around the world are facing. When asked about the situation, the foreign minister of Iran, Hossein Amirabdollahian, says things like this happens all the time all over the world. The protesters have shown their difference of opinion, shouting “Death to the dictator” at protests. Though the government says they’re investigating her death, there are still serious doubts.
The protests continue around the world; people are seeming to not back down until change is seen. But as the people continue to resist, the government continues to downplay the situation. Questions have arisen regarding the government: will they take action against those responsible for Amini’s death? Will women continue to die at the hands of those who are supposed to protect them? The world wonders while also waiting for Iran to finally seek peace with its governed people and Iranians around the world.
A hurricane is one of the most difficult things to prepare for. Its certain unpredictability typically keeps people on the edge of their seats trying to figure out how significant and devastating the hurricane will be. Though some Americans have dealt with a hurricane hitting their respective area more than once, it never gets any easier dealing with the impact of one.
Unfortunately, those in southern and western states such as Florida and Texas have become all too familiar with hurricanes and the impact left behind. Usually, hurricane season starts in the beginning of June and ends at the end of November and several hurricanes will occur between that time.
This year, on September 28th, the deadliest hurricane to happen was in southwest Florida, Hurricane Ian. Hurricane Ian was the cause of widespread damage and flooding in Florida, the Carolinas, and Cuba. It registered just short of a category 5 storm, the strongest classification on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane scale.
At least 119 people passed away in connection with Hurricane Ian. An astounding 200,000 residents of Florida ended up losing power from this devastating hurricane. Hurricane Ian is the most dangerous hurricane to ever strike in Florida since 1935, and is the second-deadliest storm to strike the continental U.S. this century, behind Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
There are still many relief efforts going on around the world to help all of those affected by the hurricane such as go GoFundMe pages, over a billion dollars in federal grants, disaster loans, and flood insurance payments. Florida residents will feel the impact from the hurricane for a long time. Hurricanes may be common, but nothing was common about Hurricane Ian.
On October 11th, 2022, NASA confirmed that their DART mission had successfully redirected the orbit of an asteroid. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) was designed to test our planetary defenses against celestial bodies that may pose possible threats to Earth.
The DART spacecraft was contracted through the company SpaceX, and the launch took place on November 24th, 2021. It was targeted to hit the asteroid Dimorphic and change its orbit around a larger asteroid named Didymos, which it appears to have accomplished. Since the craft’s impact on September 26th, NASA personnel have been closely tracking the orbit patterns of Dimorphic. After following the data for nearly two weeks, NASA released an article claiming that the DART mission had been successful, and affirms it provides an insight into future defense systems.
While DART seems to have been a major success, some have questioned the amount of federal spending that went into the project. Essentially, NASA used tax-payer’s money to destroy a multimillion dollar vehicle. They justify this act, though, by claiming it will protect Americans, and possibly the world, in case of emergency.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has been storming the news recently. While there have been a multitude of physical attacks between the two, there have also been a plethora of cyber attacks, in an act of digital warfare.
There have been reports of cyber attacks on the Ukrainian postal service after their attempt to issue commemorative war stamps. Prior to that, the Ukrainian government claimed to have thwarted an attack with Russian-backed hackers who were working to interrupt the Ukrainian power grid.
Due to the devastation of the war, many different aid organizations have been set up for Ukrainian relief, though some of these organizations have experienced attacks themselves, including employees at Insecurity Insight, a Switzerland nonprofit. They have been working to help protect Ukraine from the onslaught of attacks coming from Russia, but received malicious messages coming from Russian agencies themselves. Although Ukraine has taken many blows, they have also managed to throw a few punches, too. Ukrainians and Americans together have been able to target dozens of Russian Institutions.
Why?
On February 23rd, Vladimir Putin stated in his speech that he was giving permission for military action to proceed in Ukraine. He also stated that if any nation tried to interfere they would suffer a response by Russia that would be "so severe that no foreign nations have ever experienced it before."
On February 21, Putin stated in another speech that he is defending Russian-speaking areas of Ukraine, particularly the self-declared republics of Luhansk and Donetsk, which broke from control of the Ukrainian government in 2014. He ordered the military action to “demilitarize” Ukraine, due to Ukraine wanting to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).
NATO is a military alliance whose main purpose is to defend the nations that are a part of it from communist countries. NATO consists of 29 countries, both in Europe and North America. Some of these countries include Canada, Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The rest of these countries can be seen by this link. Putin evidently sees this as a threat, as he does not want Ukraine to join NATO. Putin is a communist, so a conclusion can be made that he does not like NATO, and sees it as a threat to his communist nation.
How?
There were some prospects of the invasion happening before it even began. On February 23rd, 2022, there was a livestream video from a border crossing between Crimea and parts of southern Ukraine. Two guards were seen to be looking at something heading towards the Ukrainian border. Several seconds later, multiple individuals in camouflage were seen crossing the border. Following this situation, the camera cuts out.
At 5am, Russia launched a series of missile attacks at locations near Kyiv, which is the capital of Ukraine. The use of long-range artillery was also used against the northeastern city of Kharkiv, which is near the Russian border. The strikes then started increasing across central and eastern Ukraine. Huge blasts were reported in the cities of Odessa, Dnipro, Mariupol and Kramatorsk. There were multiple targets. The main international airport at Boryspil was one location that was obliterated. Airports were also hit in Kharkiv, Ozerne, Kulbakino, Chuhuiv, Kramatorsk and Chornobaivka. The targets were supposed to be mainly military locations, but horrific damage still continued to happen in cities.
There were various weapons used in this invasion, such as attack aircraft and helicopters, tanks, long range artillery and missiles. Russia’s military strength and funding is extremely high and has been for decades so this is most likely how Putin is funding this invasion.
Around 7 am, raid sirens blasted throughout Kyiv while a plane started soaring above the capital. Ukraine claimed that the plane had shot down five Russian aircraft and a helicopter. However, Russia said that they had not lost any aircraft.
As the day progressed, millions hurried towards the North Bridge, heading west, away from the Russian attacks. Some people sought shelter, some prayed, and many people went to gas stations and grocery stores. As time went on, more and more soldiers and innocent people lost their lives in this tragic event.
What?
Evidently, the war that is taking place is mainly between Russia and Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine have always had tension. Since the 20th century, the tension has only been going up. In 1918, Ukraine declared independence from Russia, which started a conflict that went on for several years. The Soviet Union then overthrew Ukraine and Ukraine became a part of the Soviet Union in 1922. In 1991, Ukraine declared independence from Russia again, which was endorsed by 92% of voters. Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus then sign an accord recognizing that the Soviet Union had dissolved. Since then, there have been multiple disputes with Russia and Ukraine.
Recently, on February 23rd, Ukraine wanted to join NATO, which is a military alliance that helps its nations thrive. Vladimir Putin saw this as a threat, and decided to demilitarize Ukraine so they couldn’t join NATO. Multiple locations and targets were bombed and destroyed by military weapons. Thousands of soldiers and innocent lives passed away due to the invasion. Ukrainian president responded to Putin’s speeches about the invasion with a minute-long speech of his own, saying he had spoken to US President Joe Biden and that the US was rallying international support for Ukraine.

On the 8 of February, Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva was temporarily suspended by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) after receiving the results of her positive drug test. After the ban had been lifted, she went on to place fourth in the women’s individual figure skating event that Thursday.
An appeal to the lifting of the suspension was made by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), International Olympic Committee, and International Skating Union. Objections to the appeal then arose from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) due to Ms. Valieva’s age. Others question why she was allowed to continue to perform, even with her being a minor, under these circumstances.
The drug sample, not marked “high priority,” was initially taken in December, but RUSADA was only notified after Ms. Valieva had already competed and earned a gold medal. This very unfortunate situation could have been avoided if “all [had] been accomplished on time and in conformity with the time limits recommended by WADA in its International Standards for Laboratories”, CAS claims.
The drugs that Ms. Valieva tested positive for include Hypoxen, L-carnitine, and trimetazidine, the latter of which being banned by antidoping officials. The chief executive of the United States Anti-Doping Agency claims that the combination of these substances “[seems] to be aimed at increasing endurance, reducing fatigue and promoting greater efficiency in using oxygen.” One possible explanation for the use of trimetazidine is cross contamination between Ms. Valieva and her grandfather, given that he does own it.
This situation has resulted in the cancellation of the medal ceremony for the Russian team, as well as the brewing of suppositions as to whether or not minors should receive special treatment and if Kamila Valieva is a victim of abuse.
The brain-teaser game Wordle was bought by the New York Times on January 31st. The thought-provoking puzzle is said to have been sold for a price “in the low seven figures.”
The name Wordle is actually a take on the software engineer’s name, who created the game, Josh Wardle. Mr. Wardle has created popular software inventions in the past, like The Button and Place on Reddit. Wordle, however, was created by Mr. Wardle for his partner Palak Shah, during the pandemic. As Ms. Shah loves guessing games, she greatly appreciated this gift, which then became popular among Wardle’s family, and then the world. User numbers climbed from 90 in November, to 300,000 in January, and now millions!
To win, users must guess a five-letter word correctly within six attempts. There is no hint or theme to the word of the day, however, the more you guess, the more clues you get. If a letter turns green, then that letter is already in its correct position within the word. If a letter turns yellow, then it is used in the word, but it is not in its correct position. Lastly, if a letter turns gray, then it is not used in the word at all.
This easy-to-decipher color code allows for users to share their game results without spoiling the word. The New York Times hopes that these improvements on their website will increase digital users.
Tragically, a widely loved actress known as Betty White passed away on the last day of 2021.
White died on December 31, 2021, at 99 years old. Six days earlier, she suffered a stroke. Medical officials list this occurrence as the immediate cause of her death. Her birthday was January 17th, which would have been her 100th birthday. Jeff Witjas, White’s friend and agent, said that he "was told that Betty passed in her sleep peacefully without pain. To me, this is the most important thing and brings me comfort as her friend."
Betty White started her television career in the late 1930s and made numerous TV appearances. She was mostly known for her role as Rose Nylund in The Golden Girls, which first aired on September 14, 1985. On January 7th, 57 year-old David Bennett made medical history. David Bennet, in the throes of heart failure and in desperate need of a new heart, was denied a place on the waiting list due to his failure to follow doctors orders. He then decided to become part of a revolutionary experiment, a type of surgery called xenotransplantation. Directly defined, xenotransplantation means transplant from an animal into the human body. In Bennett’s case, it was a pig heart. According to the latest information, Bennet is alive and well, and his body is adapting to the pig heart.
The pig heart that Bennet received was not directly from a pig. The heart was first slightly genetically modified in order to increase the chances of the body accepting the foreign organ, as it would naturally reject it. While GMOs seem to have a bad reputation, in this case, they were quite literally life savers. By genetically modifying the pig heart, it has the characteristics needed for the recipient’s body to accept it. Although the surgery was over two weeks ago, Bennett seems to be doing well and his body has not yet rejected the vital organ.
While the use of GMOs in the surgery was very controversial, there has been no evidence to back up the claims that GMOs are bad for every part of the human body. In this case the Genetically Modified Organisms have actually helped to save a life. This type of experimental surgery may be opening new doors in the medical field that will allow a higher percentage of transplant survivors.
On November 30, 2021, at Oxford High School, students and staff thought that it would be a normal day. However, this day turned out to be a devastating tragedy.
Ethan Crumbley, a 15 year old sophomore at Oxford, shot four students and injured several others. The four students who died were Tate Myre, 16; Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Hana St. Juliana, 14; and Justin Shilling, 17 (Elamroussi, 2021).
Timeline of before, during, and after the shooting:
On Friday, November 26, James Crumbley buys a gun from Acme Shooting Goods in Oxford, according to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. In an Instagram post later that day, it shows his son Ethan holding the semi-automatic handgun, and he writes: "Just got my new beauty today. SIG SAUER 9mm. Any questions, I will answer." He includes an emoji showing a smiling face with heart eyes (Ziegler, 2021).
On Saturday, November 27, Jennifer Crumbley wrote on social media that it is a "mom and son day testing out his new Christmas present," the prosecutor says. The day before the shooting, a teacher at Oxford observes Ethan looking online for ammunition with his cellphone during class and notifies school officials. School personnel calls, leaves a voicemail, and emails her, but she does not respond. She texts her son, “Lol. I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught.” According to Sheriff's Lieutenant Tim Willis, that night, Ethan Crumbley recorded a video where he discussed killing students (Ziegler, 2021).
On the day of the shooting, a teacher finds a disturbing note on Ethan’s desk. This alarms her enough to take a picture. In addition to a drawing of a handgun, it depicts the words: "The thoughts won't stop. Help me." As well as a bullet with the caption, "blood everywhere," it depicts a stricken person who appears to have been shot twice and is bleeding. A laughing emoji is drawn beneath the figure. Also included in the note are the phrases "my life is useless" and "the world is dead." Immediately, the parents are called to the school for a meeting around 10 a.m. A school counselor takes Ethan out of class and takes him to the office with his backpack. Upon obtaining the drawing, the counselor discovers that Ethan had already scratched around sections. A note is shown to his parents, who are urged to get him counseling within 48 hours. According to McDonald, they don't want Ethan to immediately leave school and depart without him. Ethan returns to his classroom. At about 12:51 p.m., Ethan comes out of a bathroom with the gun that his father bought for him four days prior. He shoots at students in a hallway, killing four and wounding six students and one teacher. He is captured by deputies within minutes of the shooting. Jennifer Crumbley texts her son at 1:22 p.m, saying, “Ethan don’t do it.” At 1:57 p.m., James Crumbley calls 911 to report that a gun is missing from his house. He also reports that he believes his son may be the shooter. The gun had been kept unlocked in a drawer in the parents' bedroom, McDonald says.
On Wednesday, December 1, Ethan is charged as an adult with first degree murder and terrorism. On December 3, Ethan’s parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, are charged with involuntary manslaughter. Authorities begin searching for both of them when they do not show up for their 4 p.m. arraignment. Later that day, U.S. Marshals announced a reward of up to $10,000 each for information leading to their arrests. During the manhunt, a sentimental vigil honoring the victims is attended by thousands. On December 4, they were arrested at a commercial building in Detroit. Later that morning, they both plead not guilty during a hearing over zoom, and a judge sets bond at $500,000 for each. Two $100 million lawsuits are being filed against Oxford officials, claiming that they had knowledge about threats, and could have prevented the deadly shooting.

In February of 2020, the United States government announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics. This was quickly followed by other countries, such as Australia, Britain, and Canada.
Many believe this boycott means that athletes will not be competing in the games, but that is simply not true. In reality, a diplomatic boycott means that U.S diplomats will not be attending the games, but the athletes will continue to compete as normal. Besides summits and other planned international meetings, the Olympics has become the site of the biggest international gatherings. When announcing the boycott, the White House press secretary claimed the “genocide and crimes against humanity” as the reason for the absence of the diplomats. Recently, the Chinese government has become harsh with the ethnic Muslims and other minorities, by using mass detentions and other forms of oppression. In response to this, America, as well as many other countries have decided to boycott the games. Additionally, Beijing has not done much in response to the Coronavirus pandemic, and many countries are worried for their athletes and spectators.
While this may seem like a controversial decision on America’s part, there has been next to no backlash. If anything, many Republicans have been calling for more harsh action against the Chinese government than what America has already displayed.

The new, and now dominant, Coronavirus variant called Omicron is taking a toll on the United States. Many places are considering taking safety measures again, due to the rapidly rising case numbers.
The Omicron strain was first recorded in the US on December 1. This variant was found in 73% of the new COVID cases as of this past week. So far, it is believed that if one is vaccinated against the Coronavirus, yet does not have a booster shot, they will be more susceptible to contracting the variant. However, both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals are able to spread the virus. Unfortunately, the Omicron variant is much more contagious than the Delta variant. It is reportedly two to three times more contagious.
New safety restrictions and measures like mask mandates, vaccination verification, vaccine test sites, and orders to get booster shots have been released across the country. The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, now requires vaccination proof for certain specified indoor facilities. Although these restrictions are not being enforced everywhere, the CDC is encouraging the use of masks, testing, and vaccines to protect against the new variant. Many hospitals have already reached full capacity and are requiring extra assistance.

On November 19, a spectacular lunar eclipse lit up the sky. This golden orange masterpiece was the longest-lasting partial lunar eclipse for over 560 years, lasting 3 hours, 28 minutes, and 46 seconds. The last one surpassing this time occurred on February 18, 1440 and scientists estimate that the next lunar eclipse this long won’t occur until 2669, well beyond our lifetime!
So what causes these lunar eclipses? And what causes some of them to be longer than others? According to NASA, a lunar eclipse appears when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align, causing the Moon to pass into Earth’s shadow, known as the umbra. For every lunar eclipse, both partial and total, the Moon passes through the umbra. However, in a partial lunar eclipse, such as the one on November 19, not all of the moon is covered completely by the umbra. Another difference between total and partial eclipses is that partial eclipses occur nearly three times a year, while total eclipses appear about two every three years
In addition, some eclipses can be longer than others for two reasons: the speed of the Moon’s orbit and how close the partial eclipse is to totality. The farther the moon is away from the Earth, the slower it passes through the umbra. For that reason, the Moon moved slowly on November 19, 2021 because it was at one of its farthest points away from the Earth. This also caused the moon to be closer in totality because the slower it traveled, the more it stayed in Earth’s shadow appearing as a total lunar eclipse.
While lunar eclipses themselves occur quite often, happening around three times a year, a lunar eclipse lasting this long is quite a rare occurrence. With an occurrence that only happens every 600 years, we can be grateful that we were the lucky ones who got to see such a spectacular event within our lifetime!

Ten spectators were left dead from the 2021 Astroworld Festival on November 5. A lawsuit demanding $750 million from Travis Scott, Drake, Live Nation, and Apple was filed on behalf of the 125 victims.
Along with the 10 deceased concertgoers, many others were injured while Travis Scott was performing at the festival. It is not the first occasion in which he has encouraged dangerous conduct during one of his shows either. Travis Scott, or Jacques Bermon Webster II, has two misdemeanors from 2015 and 2017.
This year, Scott’s endangering behavior was met with a shortage of security and medical professionals, resulting in a massive crowd surge. This crowd surge trapped and suffocated the viewers as they were pushed to the front of the stage. Hazardous conditions were already reported around 5 p.m., and then later at 9 p.m. 260 incidents had been logged. Scott began his performance at this time and the environment only became increasingly worse. At 9:38 p.m., the Houston Fire Department declared the show to be a “mass casualty event” and Scott apparently did not know of this until the morning of November 6. Scott also welcomed and performed with Drake, or Aubrey Drake Graham, during this time. He did not stop the show until around 10:10 p.m.
Over the hour, the crowd surge caused many health issues among the concertgoers including unconsciousness, cardiac, and respiratory failures. It is unknown whether or not Scott knew of the tragedies taking place during the show, but it is reported that bodies were being transported for everyone to see, including Scott and Drake.
Scott is now saying that he will cover the expenses of the victims’ funerals. Two of the fatalities include Axel Acosta, 21, and Ezra Blount, 9. The lawsuit filed against the organizers is based off of negligence and is intended to expose everyone involved in the festival. It is also supposed to reveal what safety measures can be taken at concerts to ensure a good and protected environment in the future.

A round trip flight to Mars and back has been the aspiration of generations of astronauts, physicists, and engineers. The idea that humans could travel through space to another planet has been the fascination of space-lovers for years, however, they are faced with a major problem. As Earth has an incredibly large gravitational pull, a massive amount of fuel is necessary to lift a rocket off the ground. A one-way trip to Mars could take up to three years. This presents a problem that scientists have worked endlessly to solve: is it possible to load a rocket with enough fuel to break through Earth’s gravity and fly to Mars and back?
Not only is it an immense challenge to get approximately 30 tons of methane and liquid oxygen onto a rocket, but it is also extremely costly, leaving scientists with a challenge that desperately needs to be solved. Some scientists believe they have found materials that can help solve this problem. They believe that they can ship two microbes along with the astronauts to space to help produce fuel while on Mars. Cyanobacteria is an example of such a microbe that can be taken to Mars to create energy. Through photosynthesis, cyanobacteria can produce nearly 44 tons of oxygen for the crew on board. In addition, a type of genetically modified E.Coli can help ferment those sugars and create a usable fuel source for the return trip to Earth.
One of the drawbacks of this method is that the fuel E.Coli would produce is much weaker than that of methane and liquid oxygen. This may not be as large of a problem as it seems, though, as Mars’ gravitational pull is much weaker than Earth, so therefore less energy is needed to overcome it. Another issue that has arisen is the fact that special equipment is necessary to extract the fuel from E.Coli, which will have to be brought along on the trip to Mars. This could pose new challenges that engineers will need to overcome in addition to the usual space-travel problems they must solve.
Scientists admit that they still have a great deal to improve upon, but they are confident this could become a viable option for fueling Mars space travel. Although they have a long way to go, scientists are thrilled over the recent discoveries.

Parents have been waiting to vaccinate their children. Now that the moment has come, it leaves many others wondering if it is safe. In the last couple of weeks the CDC has authorized the Pfizer/ BioNTech Covid Vaccine for 5 -11 year-olds. Doses are currently being distributed. President Biden has ordered enough vaccines to vaccinate all 28 million children in that age category.
According to the CDC’s advisory committee the benefits of this vaccine are greater than the risks. This vaccine, like the adult one, is being given out in two doses which consist of 10 micrograms which is 20 less than what adults received and has been tested in a clinical trial. In the clinical trial they tested out 30 micrograms, 20 micrograms, and 10 micrograms. The 10 microgram dose resulted in fewer side effects while still generating good immune responses that were achieved in the adult vaccine. As far as side effects go, most children in the trial did not get any other than some pain at the injection site. Of the small group who did experience side effects they had some fatigue, headaches, and muscle aches after the second dose.
Some parents are very excited to get their children vaccinated as they are afraid for their social children to be social. Some families now feel like they can start to go on vacations after their children get the Pfizer shot. This vaccine pushes the country one step further to demasking and getting back to normal. On the other hand some families feel like the vaccine was rushed and is unsafe for their children. Many are waiting to see how the first batch of vaccinations go to see if it has a great effect on the majority of children or not. Health professionals disagree with this approach as they say mass vaccination is crucial for beating this pandemic. Statistics show that people who aren’t vaccinated are the ones who suffer the most from the Covid -19 virus.
This vaccine can be scary but health professionals ask that people look at the statistics and think about if they should get it, but also to consider the effects of not getting the vaccine as well.

Over the centuries, technological advancements have been tremendous. One that is currently being developed is called Destination Earth. The full development of Destination Earth will provide tremendous benefits to our society. Europe's executive branch, the European Commission, has launched Destination Earth, a vital initiative. The overall goal is to produce a high quality digital model of the Earth (a 'digital twin') to monitor and predict environmental changes.
To accomplish the goal, Europe's scientific and industrial excellence will join forces with the Commission to demonstrate how digital technology can contribute effectively to a sustainable and digital future (“Destination Earth | Shaping Europe”).
The features Destination Earth will have include the following: monitoring and simulating the Earth's system developments (land, sea, atmosphere, biosphere) and human involvement, predicting environmental disasters and preceding socio-economic crises, and developing and testing scenarios for sustainable development.
There are four main things that DestinE (Destination Earth) will impact in our society; climate change, natural disasters risk management, energy, and farming. The program will develop efficient adaptation strategies to help decrease the impact on climate change. In addition, it will predict extreme natural disasters to save lives and structures. New knowledge will be acquired to enable projects like harvesting Earth’s inner heat and converting the geothermal energy and storing it. Lastly, it will increase irrigation, fertilization, and harvesting and monitor its response to extreme weather (“Destination Earth | Shaping Europe”).
Destination Earth will likely be implemented gradually over the next five to six years. There will be two digital twins: Digital Twin on Weather-Induced and Geophysical Extremes and the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin. The first twin will address the assessment and prediction of environmental extremes, and the second twin will address the evaluation of climatic adaptation and mitigation policies on a decadal timescale, at a regional and national level. A key milestone is the launch of these two digital twins by December 2030 (“European Space Agency Moves Forward With Destination Earth”).

Avid sci-fi fans may know exactly who William Shatner is, though to those who are not as well versed in science fiction, this may seem like just a vaguely familiar name. William Shatner had been dominating the space science news for the past couple of weeks, as this “Star Trek” actor actually took a trip into space thanks to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin.
One of the many millionaire-run space exploration companies, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin has had multiple missions in the past couple months, mostly focused on testing the New Shepard spacecraft. The New Shepard launches have focused mainly on the safety of the system, as well as the crew aboard. It was this New Sherpard craft that launched Shatner, as well as three other crew members into lower level orbit around the Earth. Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in the incredibly well known science fiction show “Star Trek'' was thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of this mission. He was beyond excited to experience actual space travel, after having portrayed it on the screen for so many years. Upon re entry, Shatner was caught crying, completely overwhelmed with emotion. He later talks about his experience, saying it was unbelievable and amazing. Shatner is not only known as playing Captain Kirk, but now holds the title of oldest man in space, being 90 years old during his trip.
On September 11, 2021, a woman was reported missing. 8 days later, her body was discovered. This woman was Gabby Petito.
Gabby Petito was a 22-year-old woman, who was dating a man by the name of Brian Laundrie. They had been dating since 2019 and decided to move in together. No one else knows what their relationship was like, but their friends have given input. Petito’s friend Alyssa Chen said that "They had times they were toxic and times where everything seemed a lot more healthy. “They had very low lows and very high highs. But they really seemed to love each other." Laundrie’s friend Ben Matula said he felt like “there was always something below the surface” These statements are chilling because there is a high possibility that Brian Laundrie murdered Gabby Petito (“Gabby Petito’s Inner Circle Shares Insight Into Alleged ‘Toxic’ Relationship With Brian Laundrie'').
The timeline starts in June. Petito and Laundrie left their home in North Port, Florida, in a white 2012 Ford Transit van, to attend Petito’s brother’s high school graduation. On July 2nd, they left New York and headed west to go on a relaxing road trip. On July 4th through July 22nd, Petito posted numerous pictures on social media as they drove through Kansas, Colorado, and Utah. On August 12th, a 911 caller reported Laundrie and Petito fighting in front of the Moonflower Community Cooperative in Moab, Utah. The caller said that Laundrie was hitting and slapping Petitio. Police officers stopped the van on a highway. A body cam video shows very heartbreaking scenes of Petitio describing the argument that led to the violence. The police officers only said that they should spend the night apart. On August 24th, Petitio was seen for the last time. A day later, she posts her final pictures to Instagram, with no location. She also speaks to her mom for the last time. Petitio says that they are headed to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. On August 27th, travel bloggers recorded what they thought was the white van parked near Spread Creek Dispersed Campground (“Timeline: ’Van Life’ Road Trip Ends in Death of Gabby Petito”).
Laundrie returned alone to his home in Florida on September 1st - with the white van. It is likely that he did not speak of Petito at all. On September 11th, Petito was reported missing by her family, and a search began. Three days later, Laundrie’s family states that he has an attorney and will not speak to law enforcement. This made him a person of interest since he refused to speak to investigators. On September 17th, Laundrie’s family reported him missing and said that they had not seen him in three days. The police then started to search for him in a swampy reserve. On September 19th, a body was found in Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming. This was less than 1,000 feet from where the travel bloggers spotted the van near Spread Creek Dispersed Campground. On September 21st, an autopsy was conducted on the remains. FBI agents confirmed that they belonged to Petitio and that her death was a homicide. On October 12st, Dr. Brent Blue, a corner, says that Petito was killed by strangulation about three to four weeks before her body was found. On October 21st, dental records were conducted on human remains found in a Florida wilderness park. These were identified in which they belonged to Laundrie (“Timeline: ’Van Life’ Road Trip Ends in Death of Gabby Petito”).

It is not a secret that social media has revolutionized society. Social media has opened up the possibility of building connections beyond physical limits. It has allowed for faster communication and the ability to easily raise awareness for global movements. Despite this, there are still a lot of unknowns that we have yet to discover in the world of social media. Its implications are by no means limited, however, with social media being an incredibly new development, many of those drawbacks remain untouched.
A prime example of social media at its worst came to light a few weeks ago when a former Facebook employee, Frances Haugen, leaked thousands of confidential documents regarding Facebook’s algorithm. According to Haugen (also called the “whistleblower”), Facebook has been fostering the rapid spread of misinformation. Haugen worked on Facebook’s Civic Integrity Team as a product manager for over two years. It did not take her long to discover that Facebook actually plays a major role in current political crises by allowing hate content to surge its platform.
Haugen said "The company's leadership knows how to make Facebook and Instagram safer, but won't make the necessary changes because they put their astronomical profits before people."
The more that Facebook keeps hateful content on a user’s feed, the longer the user engages, thus, the more money the company makes.
Throughout her time working for Facebook, the whistleblower copied documents to use as evidence in hopes of exposing the company. When she left Facebook in April of 2021, Frances Haugen sent those documents to the Securities and Exchange Commission and to Congress. They were also given to the Wall Street Journal for public viewing.
But how exactly was Frances Haugen allowed to leak these documents? Isn’t this considered a violation of company privacy? The answer to this is no. Under the Whistleblower Protection Laws, Frances Haugen is actually fully permitted, by law, to copy company documents if she has any speculation to believe a crime is being committed. Even Facebook attempted to argue that Haugen “violated privacy”, but they were unsuccessful under government protections.
What lies ahead for Facebook remains uncertain. Some speculate that they may struggle to survive a blow this hard, but others believe this event may prompt Facebook to make changes in the right direction. Even Frances Haugen herself does not want to see an end to Facebook, she just wants tighter regulation and a platform that engages in positivity and truth over hate and misinformation.
She believes that “together we can create social media that brings out the best in us. We solve problems together – we don’t solve them alone”.
The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics are just around the corner. Sports fans across the globe are waiting anxiously to watch their favorite returning athletes and prospective newbies compete in contests beginning on July 23, 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 virus, this year’s competition will look a little different than normal. In addition to it’s typical hurdles, the International Olympic Committee encounters a variety of new obstacles this year such as the amount of spectators allowed, where events can be held, temperature checks, and regular coronavirus testing. The IOC knows that these challenges will make planning the event much harder than usual, but they are up to the challenge and willing to make this Summer Olympics the best one yet.
One of the most frequently asked questions regarding the Summer Olympics has been “who will be able to come”? While this answer still remains uncertain, many speculate that the IOC will only allow Japanese spectators to the event. Because of this, NBC has stepped up to make watching the games easily accessible to everyone. Pete Bevacqua, chairman of the NBC Sports Group, says “Given the magnitude of this event, we want to provide viewers with as many ways to connect to it as possible, live or in primetime”. NBC plans to stream the events live on all of their platforms, both on TV and online. In addition to the amount of spectators, many also wonder how athletes will be kept safe from contracting the coronavirus from other competitors. The IOC’s plan is to temperature check and test athletes for the virus regularly, as well as limit an athletes stay to the duration of their event. Once athletes no longer compete in any events, they will be sent home to minimize the spread of the virus among the mass amount of people in attendance.
While all of the previously mentioned changes are COVID-19-related, the IOC does have some exciting news regarding changes to sporting events. In order to attract a wider array of younger athletes, BMX and skateboarding competitions will be added, both featuring difficult and risky obstacles. Half court 3-on-3 basketball is another sporting event that will make its debut for the first time ever in the Summer Olympics.
While sporting events and COVID precautions may be changing, the country’s favorite Olympic athletes will still be returning to compete for the gold. Simone Biles, a 5 time world champion for women’s gymnastics, returns to compete at the games. The US Olympic women’s soccer team features a number of players from the USA women’s team that won the World Cup in 2019. Olympic swimmers, Katie Ledecky, Simone Manuel, and Caeleb Dressel all plan to attend as well. There are also some new athletes to watch out for! Sydney McLaughlin made her first debut at the Olympics in 2016 as the youngest ever US Olympic track athlete. This year, she returns for her second time to compete in the 400 m hurdles. Michael Norman (23) and Noah Lyles (24) are two other young athletes who plan to race as sprinters for the US team.
The games are just a few short months away and it’s time to get ready for all the excitement! “I'm excited for the new challenge. I'm excited for another opportunity. It's definitely an exciting time," says soccer player Julie Ertz.
*Please be advised that all information specific to prom is subject to change*
An essential component of every high school experience is Senior Prom. Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, many seniors have not been anticipating Prom because of last year’s cancellation. However, Exeter’s Prom Committee has been working diligently to plan the event around coronavirus restrictions. Exeter’s Senior/Junior Prom is expected to take place on June 3, weather permitting, in the Don Thomas Stadium from 7 to 9 PM.
Mrs. Preston, Exeter’s Senior Class Advisor, has been working hard to plan an event that is safe and inclusive. The Prom Committee is happy for the opportunity to offer something for the Senior Class. In order to encourage social distancing, the event will be held in the Football Stadium. Don’t worry, you will still be allowed to slow dance with your date, provided you are both wearing masks. In addition to masks, sneakers and flip-flops are also part of the dress code due to the turf field. The committee is planning to set up a heel drop-off area and offer appropriate footwear.
Due to the transmission of germs, there will be no food permitted at the event, however, the committee is planning to offer party favors at the end of the night. Since the cost of catering has been cut from the dance’s budget, the ticket prices are expected to be around $20, which is a significant reduction from previous years. The date of ticket sales is yet to be determined, but it will be conducted virtually. Attendance will be capped at 300 people in order to social distance, which may or may not include guests, depending on how many Exeter students purchase tickets.
Even though some of this news may be disappointing, there are many opportunities for Prom this year that weren’t previously possible at an indoor event. There will still be a DJ and an open-air photo booth. In addition, Seniors should expect to enter various raffles to win gift baskets, gift cards, and many other prizes generously provided by the Senior Parent Committee.
Continue to stay positive as the Prom Committee figures out more details in order for Prom to be a fun and memorable event “Under the Stars”.
With the 2020-2021 school year coming to a close, many students and families are left wondering what next year will be like: more zoom classes or will we finally see classrooms filled with students? Well, some college officials are finally releasing statements about what college students can expect in the months ahead.
Many colleges are planning for a full re-opening for the 2021 fall semester. Some of the most student-populated campuses in Pennsylvania such as Pennsylvania State University, University of Pittsburgh, and Temple University are planning on re-opening at more than ninety percent capacity, opening up residence and dining halls and most classrooms. However, plans for re-opening are not because it is now completely safe to go back to “normal.” Many colleges are forced to re-open to keep their doors open. Forced to go virtual in 2020, many colleges lost money as residence and dining halls were closed and classes went completely virtual. Going virtual for another school year would further hurt colleges, and even force some smaller colleges to shut their doors
College officials do warn students that although most of their campuses are returning in person, everything will not go back to the way it was before the pandemic. Masks will still have to be worn, vaccinations will be offered on campus as well as regular covid-tests.
Even though the college experience won’t be exactly like pre-covid times this fall, a full re-opening of campuses across the country, with some restrictions, of course, sheds hope for our nation getting closer to a return of normalcy.
With the detrimental global pandemic still going on, vaccines are a step closer for our world to get back to normal.
A vaccine clinic was run by the Exeter Township School District and Walmart, which took place at the Lausch Administration building, from March 24th to March 26th. Residents that were in the 1a category of the state’s vaccine rollout plan could schedule appointments to get vaccinated. Walmart administered the Pfizer vaccine and has not yet formally announced plans for extending the clinic for first-dose vaccines beyond the three days the clinic was open for.
Lausch’s vaccine clinic was open to residents in the 1a category of the state’s vaccine rollout plan. On the week of March 29th, Governor Tom Wolf announced that the state would be advancing the rollout plan. Starting on April 5th, people in the 1b category could get the vaccination. On April 12th, vaccinations were open to people in the 1c category.
Despite the clinic only being opened for three days, it is inherently possible that Walmart could hold the clinic at Lausch again in the future. Hopefully, there will be enough vaccinations for not only people in Pennsylvania but the entire world.

When we think of 5G networks, we often imagine a TV commercial from Verizon, Sprint, or another mobile networking brand claiming that they had the fastest network, most global locations, and highest internet speeds. They say that 5G is the “next big thing”, and soon will reach every square inch of the earth. At least that’s what the commercial makes it seem like...but what if 5G isn’t as great as the TV makes it seem?
Around the world, people have been concerned about the risks of 5G. Because of 5G’s improvements from 4G in respect to its speeds, *latency, and *bandwidth, people have been concerned about the effects that stronger radio waves will have on public health. Overall well-being of people who are exposed to 5G networks has been questioned because of reports of headaches and reduced cognitive abilities.
Because the radio frequencies emitted by cell phones are *non-ionizing, the evidence between a link to cellular alteration caused by them is weak. Many studies show that there is no correlation between cell phones and cancer, yet other studies have shown links to cellular radiation and cancer in rats. Because of the varied information, it is difficult to be certain of the effects that cell phones have. In the big picture, cell phones are relatively new technology and more data is needed.
While the evidence on whether cell phone radio waves are strong enough to affect our bodies on a cellular level is varied, phones are certainly capable of affecting our well-being. Whether it be by distracting us, messing with our circadian rhythms, or straining our eyes, phones are capable of taking a toll on our bodies. Because of this, taking time away from your device can be beneficial from time to time. If you worry about the radiation coming from your phone, consider turning it on airplane mode when you go to sleep. Also, try to not talk on the phone while it's charging, since radiation emitted when its charging is ten times higher.
While new technology can be an exciting new way to connect the people of the world, it is normal to have concerns about what the consequences are. Unfortunately, the use of stronger and faster 5G networks is not something we can control, so taking personal precautions with your own devices may be the way to go if this is something that worries you.
*latency: time it takes to send and receive messages
*bandwidth: the maximum data transfer rate
*non-ionizing: not strong enough to alter human DNA structure
On February 19, 2021, the United States officially rejoined the Paris Climate agreement, which is designed to avert catastrophic global warming.
Four years after the U.S. initially walked away from the Paris agreement during former President Trump’s administration, President Joe Biden signed an executive order recommitting to the accord. Biden said “We can no longer delay or do the bare minimum to address climate change. This is a global existential crisis. And we’ll all suffer the consequences if we fail.” His actions prove to sharply contrast that of former President Donald Trump and his administration, who were eager to cut regulations that were placed to protect the environment. Former President Donald Trump stated in 2017 that the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris Climate accord, but the withdrawal was not official until November 4, 2020. The United States was officially declared “out” of the agreement for 107 days.
In upcoming months, the Biden administration must develop a Nationally Determined Contribution, or emissions-cutting target, which will line out the scope of the United States’ goals over the next decade. Under the Paris Climate agreement, the commitments are revisited every five years. The previous target set by former President Barack Obama committed the United States to cutting emissions by a minimum of 26 percent by 2025 compared to 2005. In the years following this target, U.S. emissions have declined in part due to the Obama administration’s efforts to curtail emissions.
The Biden administration plans to announce its Nationally Determined Contribution in April, when Biden convenes a World Leaders’ Summit regarding climate, and the world is watching closely as to how ambitious the Biden administration will be with its target.
On February 27th, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for a third vaccine to combat the Coronavirus pandemic: Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Covid-19 vaccine.
“The authorization of this vaccine expands the availability of vaccines, the best medical prevention method for COVID-19, to help us in the fight against this pandemic, which has claimed over half a million lives in the United States,” said Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, M.D.
The Janssen vaccine is a one dose vaccine administered to those who are 18 or older. The vaccine has to be refrigerated in temperatures between 26 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit, making it easier to store and transport than other vaccines. The Janssen vaccine uses adenovirus type 26 (Ad26) to spike protein levels of SARS-CoV-2 virus. This spike in protein levels creates an immune response in the body against SARS-CoV-2. Common side effects include pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site and tiredness, headaches, and muscle pain in the days following the shot. However, the vaccine was found to be only 67% effective compared to Pfizer and Moderna’s 95% effectiveness.
So far, the United States ordered 100 million doses of the Janssen vaccine. President Biden announced that the U.S. would buy 100 million more doses and that the pharmaceutical company, Merek, would support Johnson & Johnson in making the vaccine. The European Union has also authorized use of the Janssen vaccine, ordering 200 million doses.

Our universe contains billions of galaxies, stars, and planets. The technology at NASA is beyond advanced, but we will not be able to uncover all of the mysteries that reside in our world. If we were to go back hundreds of years ago, landing on the red planet would be seen as difficult and near impossible. Today, that is not the case.
On July 30th, 2020, at 4:50 am, the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover launched from earth for its journey to Mars. For the rover to successfully launch, scientists had to perform many pre-launch activities such as landing site selection, science definition and instrument selection, and assembly and testing. “Perseverance launched on an Atlas V-541 rocket from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.”
When the rover was cruising through space, scientists had to keep many tabs on it, such as checking the spacecraft health and maintenance, conducting navigation activities, preparing for entry, descent, landing, and surface operations. The engineers also “...have several opportunities to adjust the spacecraft’s flight path, to make sure its speed and direction are best for arrival at Jezero Crater on Mars. The first tweak to the spacecraft’s flight path happens about 15 days after launch.” For the rover to be able to launch Earth and Mars have to be in good positions relative to each other. This makes it the most energy efficient trip to Mars.
Perseverance successfully landed on Mars on February 18th, 2021. Since then, NASA has released videos and pictures of the Rover’s entry, descent, and landing.
“While exploring Mars during surface operations, Perseverance:
finds rocks that formed in, or were altered by, environments that could have supported microbial life in Mars’ ancient past (Objective A)
finds rocks capable of preserving chemical traces of ancient life (biosignatures), if any existed (Objective B)
drills core samples from about 30 promising rock and “soil” (regolith) targets and catches them on the Martian surface (Objective C)
tests the ability to produce oxygen from the carbon-dioxide Martian atmosphere, in support of future human missions (Objective D)”
Overall, NASA is continuously making history and we’re witnessing it. In about a decade from now, in 2031, it will bring back rock samples from Mars. Scientists have never before brought a piece of another planet back to Earth. In our lifetime, it’s happening.

Covid-19 has been troublesome for about a year now in the United States. The Covid-19 vaccine is finally here and it’s now being distributed across the country. But this leaves a lot of people wondering, “When am I going to get the vaccine?”
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health there are 4 phases of distribution. The first phase is called Phase 1A which Pennsylvania is currently in right now. This phase gives the vaccine to the people who are most at risk of getting the virus. These people include healthcare workers, Pennsylvanians living in long term care facilities, citizens age 65 or older, and those who have high risk conditions between the ages of 16-64. We have been in this phase for a little bit now, so the second phase should be coming soon.
The second phase is Phase 1B. People in this phase who get the vaccine are first responders, correctional officers, food and agricultural workers, postal workers, grocery store employees, educators, clergy, public transit workers, and caretakers of children in day programs.
The next phase is Phase 1C. This includes essential workers in areas of construction, food service, water, transportation, finance, communications, energy, legal service (lawyers), media, public safety, and public health. Also in this phase are the federal, state, county, and local government workers.
Phase 2 is the last phase. Anyone over the age of 16 who did not previously receive the vaccine would now be eligible.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health website has some resources to help determine vaccine eligibility. For example, an eligibility quiz that asks about age, job, etc. It would then determine a person’s eligibility. There is also a map of areas where vaccines are available.
This pandemic has caused so many deaths so the faster the vaccines get distributed, the less casualties we will have and, hopefully, soon return to normalcy. With that being said, we need to have patience as there is a limited supply of vaccines. Everyone will eventually be able to get the vaccine in the near future. Lots of people are getting it already, and you could be next.
Kamala Harris has been inaugurated as vice president meaning that she has broken a long-lasting barrier as the first woman and woman of color elected to the second-highest office. Harris symbolizes the future of a country that is growing to become more racially diverse and embodies the fight for gender equality.
The Biden-Harris inauguration concluded the grueling election season characterized by false accusations of fraud and even a push to overturn the election by storming the Capitol. Her victory comes four years after Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election to former President Donald Trump and after Harris herself attempted to vie for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Harris dropped out in December and eventually was chosen by Biden to be his running-mate. While Harris did not break through the “highest, hardest glass ceiling” Clinton spoke about when conceding in 2016, she has achieved an incredible milestone.
Harris has created a lengthy list of “firsts” during her career. As the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants she was the first Black and South Asian American attorney general in California, the first Black district attorney in California, the first South Asian American woman and second Black woman elected to the U.S Senate in the history of the United States. In her victory speech, Harris said “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last . . . because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.” She hopes that her victory will pave the way for future generations of female leaders and has shifted former precedents to open up a new chapter for women and women of color in America. The country has a long way to go in terms of racial and gender equality, but Harris’ win seems like a promising step forward.
On January 13, 2021, the House of Representatives impeached Donald Trump for the second time. In the history of the United States, he is the first President who has been impeached more than once.
In 2019, Trump was impeached for abuse of power and the obstruction of justice. Zero House Republicans voted for impeachment back then, but now ten House Republicans voted to impeach Trump for incitement of insurrection following the Capitol riot. House Speaker and Democrat Nancy Pelosi stated, “He must go . . . He is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love.”
A week before the vote, a violent mob of Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building in an effort to disturb the certification of then President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College votes. Five people died at the riots, one of which was a member of the U.S. Capitol Police. Many Democrats and Republicans alike were enraged by Trump’s mild response towards the Capitol riot and over 200 Congressional Democrats, including Senate Leader Chuck Shumer who agreed to proceed with impeachment. Trump was impeached by a vote of 232 to 197.
A majority of Trump’s Republican allies of the House spoke out against the impeachment. Many claimed that impeachment would further divide the country and would not provide any aid in healing after the riot.
Before the impeachment vote, the House called on then Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to remove Trump from office immediately through the 25th Amendment. Pence refused to on claims that it would further “ . . . divide and inflame the passions of the moment,” in a letter written to Nancy Pelosi.
The future looks unclear for Trump as the next step in the impeachment process is trial in the Senate. If Trump is convicted in the Senate, senators could also vote to block him from ever holding office again. The trial is planned to begin on February 9th. For now, it is unclear what the Senate verdict will hold.
January 20th, 2021 marks the start of the four-year term of the 46th President, Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris.
This year’s inauguration had many firsts. Kamala Harris is the first woman and person of color to fulfill the role of vice president. For the first time in 150 years, the outgoing president, Donald Trump, did not attend the inauguration. Instead, he wrote President Biden a thoughtful letter left in the Oval Office, a long-held tradition between presidents and their successors. This was also the first year in which crowds were kept out of the Capitol for the inauguration due to Covid-19 safety concerns.
Despite the smaller number of people in attendance, that did not stop the performances of some of the nation’s best performers, including Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, and Garth Brooks. Gaga sang the National Anthem at the event. Lopez sang a medley of “This Land Is Your Land” written in 1940 by Woody Guthrie and “America the Beautiful” while Brooks performed “Amazing Grace.” This year’s lineup also featured the youngest poet to speak at an inauguration, Amanda Gorman. Gorman delivered the poem “The Hill We Climb” which communicates healing and hope.
President Biden gave out a traditional inaugural address in which he touched on subjects such as unity in America and combating Covid-19, climate change, and social justice.
What took social media by storm in the days following the inauguration were the outfits of the various figures in attendance. Vice President Harris and former First Ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton all wore shades of purple, a symbol of unity during political division. Lady Gaga wore a navy blue jacket with a red skirt, which many compared to a Hunger Games-style outfit, with a dove brooch representing peace. Jennifer Lopez wore a white Victorian-style outfit. White can be used to symbolize the 1900 women’s suffrage movement.
Although the inauguration was a day full of firsts and many eye-catching moments, with American citizens yearning to return to normalcy, this new administration is tasked with guiding America through and, hopefully, out of the pandemic in their next four years in office.
January 6th, 2021 is a date that will go down in history and be in textbooks across the world. On this day Trump supporters stormed the halls of the Capitol Building to block Biden’s victory of becoming the 46th president of the United States.
On Wednesday afternoon, Trump supporters came by the hundreds and fought with police officers, broke through barriers, and climbed the West Wall of the Capitol Building to break into it. The House floor had to be evacuated and the House and Senate doors were locked because of the riot.
Four people were killed, windows on the west side of the Senate were broken, congressional leaders had to wear gas masks to escape and were told to duck and hide under their chairs. Bombs were found and luckily disabled before any harm was caused. This kind of insurrection has not happened since August of 1814 when the British attacked and burned the Capitol Building.
Did Donald Trump do his role as President of the United States to stop these rioters? I will let you form your own opinion; here are some of the facts. Trump told his supporters hours after the attack on the Capitol Building to “Go home. We love you. You are very special.” He also talked about how he thought the election that was stolen from him during this statement.
Later the same night, Donald Trump stated: "These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long. Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!"
The electoral votes were counted into early Thursday morning and Joe Biden was certified as President. This attack on the Capitol brings many questions to mind. Did Donald Trump initiate this attack by telling his supporters that the election was taken from him and to not accept the results? Did the president do enough at the time to stop the attacks? Were these people treated the same way people at peaceful Black Lives Matter Protests were treated?
With unique candidates and alleged cheating, to recounting and legal controversies that plagued the media, the 2020 presidential election was beyond a doubt unlike anything we have seen before. Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden went head to head debating and campaigning to be the next president of the United States, and while the COVID -19 global pandemic made it difficult, it certainly wasn't impossible.
Towards the end of the race, the candidates seemed to be neck and neck, with Trump pulling ahead slightly. Because of the high amount of mail in ballots, it took much longer than usual for votes to be cast. While it seemed that Trump was ahead, many of the democratic votes had not yet been counted. In the end, Joe Biden ended up winning 306 electoral votes to Donald Trump’s 232.
Once the results had been released, there was immediate backlash, and the democrats were accused of trying to steal the election. They were accused of supposedly stuffing the ballots in their favor and rigged the devices that counted the votes.
Mail in ballots have also been a major point of controversy. Many states have different rules about when mail in ballots can be counted. In some states the mail in ballots were only counted if they were there the day of election, some were counted if they arrived over a week later. Because of this, Trump also believes some mail in ballots were fraudulent, too. While Trump continues to stand by his accusation, there is no hard evidence to prove it.
Trump had been fighting tooth and nail to prove the supposed election fraud, but he has been unsuccessful. He has fought to void millions of votes due to fraud, but has lost almost every single case. Because of Biden’s supposed fraudulence, Trump has asked for a recount. This has been a very controversial undertaking, though. The number of mail in votes has made it difficult for recounting, and many states still do not agree on what makes a valid vote. Some States did submit to a recount, while others did not.
On December 14, the Electoral College certified Joe Biden as the next president.
For the first time since the 1970s, a Chinese spacecraft is bringing back moon samples to the Earth.
The probe, Chang’e-5, was initially launched on November 24th from the island of Hainan. It touched down on the moon’s Sea of Storms on December 1st and proceeded to collect samples starting December 2nd. Chinese scientists hope to collect 2 kilograms of rocks and dock the rocket on Chang’e-5. An orbiting spacecraft would then send the samples back to a field near the Mongolian border on Earth by mid-December.
If done successfully, China would be one of only three nations to bring back samples. The samples would be the first to be brought back to Earth since 1976, when the Soviet Union’s Luna-24 Robotic lander accomplished this. The United States is the other nation to land a spaceflight and have the first man on the moon, which was done in 1969.
The samples are expected to be available for scientists all over the world, which could help advance the knowledge on the history of the moon for the scientific community. It is unknown how much access NASA will have to these new samples.
This is China’s third successful probe-landing. The most recent landing marks China’s cooperation with the international community, regarding space exploration. China, specifically Beijing, has more ambitious plans to explore space, including searching for water on Mars and landing a human on the moon. China also hopes to build a base on the moon for astronauts in the 2030s.
2020 has yet another somber milestone to add to its growing list: half of the coral in the Great Barrier Reef has died.
The coral wipe out is due to rising temperatures in oceans and failure of existing coral to reproduce at a rate to compensate for the deaths. The Great Barrier Reef is very important to Australia's economy as it contributes $6.4 billion and 64,000 jobs. It attracts over two million tourists each year for snorkeling and scuba diving, allowing them to experience the explosive marine life living in the waters.
There are over thousands of plant and animal species that call the Great Barrier Reef, particularly the coral, their home. Coral also helps protect coastlines by reducing the power of waves. Therefore, dying coral has impacts on not only Australia’s economy, but thousands of species unique to the Australian waters, some of which even have yet to be discovered.
The Australian government currently set aside a $500 million budget to preserve the coral reefs. Plans include reducing water pollution, research on new climate adaptation methods, and community engagement. The biggest precaution U.S. citizens can take from home is recycling and disposing of plastic properly to ensure it doesn’t end up in our oceans.
Half of the coral died due to three decades of mistreatment. Many experts say 90% of the corals will vanish by 2050 with no preservation efforts. Although half the coral in the Great Barrier Reef are already dead, there is still time to protect the remaining half. The next couple of decades will prove to be crucial in determining the health of the remaining corals around the world.
It is up to the next generation to save the corals teeming with diverse aquatic species, in the decades to come.
Covid-19 cases have been rising at higher rates than they were in mid-summer time. Overall, the nation has experienced a 30% increase in the number of new cases then a few weeks ago, which shows that America is not headed in the right direction. This issue resurfaces major concerns about returning to school or work, what types of restrictions need to be put in place to get the coronavirus under control, and when we will get a vaccine.
Now that 8 million Americans have contracted covid-19, people may be wondering if America is the only country that is having issues with this pandemic. In fact, other countries like Britain and France, and other parts of Europe, are also experiencing an increase in covid-19 cases. America is still working towards a vaccine, and some say that it will most likely be available by mid-2021. So what happens from now until we get a vaccine?
Scientists are predicting that the winter time may cause an increase of cases due to known behaviors of other viruses like influenza. Winter is predicted to be especially dangerous because of the usual “flu season” coinciding with the covid-19 pandemic, which will make it harder for doctors to know exactly what they are treating. In addition to that, people will be spending more time indoors which increases the risk of transmitting a virus. Overall, this winter we are expected to see a surge in sickness, whether it be covid or influenza.
The risk of covid-19 cases rising this winter makes it extremely important to take the personal precautions necessary to protect yourself and those around you. That means wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands frequently, and supporting your immune system with healthy foods. The coronavirus has been no fun, but with perseverance and a little extra effort from everyone, we will get through it together.
From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, tourist-dependent locations such as Hawaii and the Bahamas have struggled with lockdowns and travel restrictions executed to help contain the virus. On reopening day, Hawaii saw 30 flights with over 8,000 tourists arrive in Honolulu and celebrated a great start to reopening. Last year around this time, Hawaii saw over 30,000 arrivals each day.
For months, the only way to go to Hawaii was to go through a mandatory two week quarantine. Then, a reopening date was provided with the option to test for coronavirus before travelling to the islands in order to avoid the quarantine altogether. However, with a surge in cases along with a lack of reliable and rapid testing, Hawaii faced big obstacles with reopening.
Finally, on October 15, Hawaii officially reopened its border to the public and openly welcomed tourists to visit its islands with a pre-testing option. All incoming passengers must have a valid COVID-19 Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) within 72 hours of boarding their final flight to Hawaii, and must be able to show proof of a negative test when arriving at the airport. If a passenger were to fail the test, they must self-quarantine for two weeks.
Some critics have claimed that reopening Hawaii will cause another surge in coronavirus cases, while Lieutenant Governor Josh Brown claims that the economic strain of Hawaii closing outweighs health risks. Hawaii’s main island Honolulu has approved a rapid secondary test upon arrival, which can produce results in just 15 minutes. A positive rapid test will result in the passenger having to self-quarantine and follow up with a more accurate PCR swab test that can take up to 36 hours to produce results. Neighboring islands to Honolulu have varying restrictions on coronavirus and tourists have been advised to check with Maui and Kauai counties.
Overall, Hawaii is celebrating a clear plateau in cases and deaths in recent weeks. Even with the reopening, their new cases through late October were even less than reported in California. Infectious disease experts have predicted a surge in cases over the holidays, so the future is still unclear as to whether or not Hawaii can remain open. For now, they are warmly welcoming and encouraging tourists to visit and relax.
The 2020 presidential election might be one of the most significant elections of our lifetimes. As the United States has become increasingly divided in the past few years, the choice between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden highlights the polarity aggravated by the current pandemic. This year’s presidential election has been historically groundbreaking as we’ve seen the highest voter turnout since 1908. Election Day, November 3, predicts a toss-up between the two candidates. However, it all comes down to the final tally and here’s what you should know.
Historically, Americans have deemed November 3 as the most important date in the presidential election. On Election Day, news channels will begin to project the amount of electoral votes each candidate may receive based on data collected as polls close in each state.
The first polls close at 6:00 pm Eastern time in some parts of Kentucky and Indiana. Other polling locations won’t close until after 12:00 AM Eastern time. Polls will close depending on location and state.
But, we have never had final results on election day. Millions of Americans choose to vote on Election Day, and millions of mail-in ballots are yet to be counted by this date. This year’s pandemic has caused even more citizens to mail-in ballots, which can further delay the results of the election. States such as Pennsylvania and Michigan have been suffering from severe ballot delivery delays, and it is predicted in some states to take up to two weeks to count each vote.
The early processing states—states that are allowing mail-in ballots to be counted long before Election Day—may lean Democratic. Once those states begin to count Election Day votes and as the night goes on, they may lean toward Republican.
In reality, no one can know for sure when we will get the final election results. In 2016, Michigan counted ballots for more than two weeks after November 8th before concluding that Donald Trump would win over (D) Hillary Clinton.
In the end, Election Day isn’t actually when we get results. It’s simply when projections can begin to be made based on data gathered. Patience will be of utmost importance when it comes to the 2020 presidential election.
Even though studies have come out explaining how quarantine has benefitted the Earth, the new climate clock in Manhattan says otherwise. Yes, we now have a climate clock.
The Metronome is a 15-digit digital clock that was used to display time. But now, it depicts a more loaded number: how much time is left before the damage done to the Earth becomes irreversible. The time read 7 years and 101 days as of September 21st. This specific time was calculated by Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change. The timer counts how long the Earth has until the atmosphere becomes 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
If the Earth becomes about two degrees hotter than it is now, which is expected to occur between 2030-2050 due to the current rate of increasing temperature, the planet will suffer more droughts, heatwaves, and wildfires.
There is also a second number displayed known as the Earth’s “lifeline”. This number is the percentage of energy that can be used and supplied from renewable energy sources. All in all, the goal is to get the supplied renewable energy to 100% before time runs out.
Gloan and Boyd debuted their project to warn people around the world, the urgency of taking action on climate change. Gloan had conjured the idea two years ago after his daughter was born. Gloan asked activist, Andrew Boyd, to help him. Before this project, Glaon and Boyd have also made teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg her own handheld climate clock. Although the clock was only temporarily set for Climate Week from September 20th to September 27th, Boyd and Golan, hope to feature it in a more permanent setting, wherever that location may be.
For now, Boyd and Glaon have a website called climateclock.world with updates and explanation of climate change related topics.
Can a digital clock help stop climate change? Only time will tell.
There is no question that 2020 has been a year that no one saw coming. From COVID-19 to Black Lives Matter movements, the year 2020 is like no other. While the Trump-Biden rivalry is certainly different, it is not the only thing that is unlike presidential elections of the past. COVID-19 had rendered it almost impossible for safe, in-person voting. To solve this problem, officials have decided that voters will be able to mail in their vote through the U.S Postal Service. The voting system is not the only part of the election impacted by the Coronavirus; both presidential nominees have had to rethink the way they campaign.
The idea of mail-in ballots has raised many concerns throughout the United States. Many Americans are concerned by the U.S Postal Service’s ability to deliver ballots in a timely manner. Also, many voters have questioned the integrity of election with the addition of mail-in ballots. Experts who have studied the effects of mail in ballots believe that one of the main problems with mailing in votes is that many get rejected. About 1 percent of roughly 33.2 mail-in ballots got rejected during the 2016 presidential election. Reasons for rejection include the signature on the ballot not matching the signature on record, the ballot missing a signature, or a ballot missing the deadline. Young and new voters are the most likely to have their vote rejected, mostly because they are new to voting and are unfamiliar with voting by mail.
For 2020’s presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, campaigning has not been what it usually is. For past presidential elections, representatives would go door-to-door in order to convince voters to choose their candidate. Candidates would hold large gatherings at which they would speak, and debates between candidates would draw a huge crowd. Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, none of these campaigning tactics can be executed safely. Trump has held rallies, but most of the people attending were not wearing masks. As of September 15, Biden has not held in-person rallies since March, when the Coronavirus became a major threat. Biden’s campaign has been mostly distant, with no physical contact, while Trump has continued to campaign both virtually and in-person.
While 2020 has been a year quite different than any other, Americans can still count on a presidential election. Though it may seem different and unconventional, candidates have still been able to campaign and voters will still be able to cast their ballots.
In early September a family in El Dorado, California hosted an innocent gender reveal party. Unbeknownst to them, the smoke-generating pyrotechnic device that they used to announce their baby’s gender would cause a wildfire that burned over 20,000 acres as of September 18, 2020.
This serves as just one example of the devastation that California wildfires have caused this year. In just one year, over 8,200 California wildfires have burned a record breaking 4 million acres of land according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Almost all of the damage was caused during August when five out of six of the largest wildfires in California’s history began. The fires have burned down thousands of homes and buildings, and have killed dozens of individuals, although a majority of the fires have been burning through unpopulated land. The most destructive fires erupted in Northern California, where many dead trees provided fuel for fires igniting from a combination of high temperatures and strong winds.
Scientists have linked climate change from the burning of fossil fuels to bigger wildfires in America. Many studies have shown that climate change has caused California to become drier and thus causing many plants and trees to become more flammable. According to Climate Central, wildfires are three times more common now in the west compared to the 1970s. As of October 6, the August fire in Northern California has expanded to a whopping 1.03 million acres, which is larger than the state of Rhode Island.
On a more positive note, California may see some relief this week as the National Weather Service reports that temperatures may drop as much as 15 degrees Fahrenheit by October 9. Rain forecasted this week may also aid in relief. However, climate scientists have warned that temporary relief should not take away from what the wildfires warn the world about.
These wildfires are a clear signal that climate change is a pressing issue that requires nearly immediate action and are only just one of the most recent signs of accelerating climate change in the United States.
George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, Stephon Clark, and Philano Castillo are just a handful of Black American citizens that have been killed by police in the past few years. The media fueled the recent eruption of the Black Lives Matter movement following George Floyd’s death in May of 2020.
Although the movement has been around since 2013 following the death of Trayvon Martin, the recent rise of police brutality has accelerated the movement to media headlines. The Black Lives Matter protests has been a topic marking what can arguably be described as one of the most divisive periods of American politics anyone has ever witnessed. The recent Black Lives Matter protests peaked on June 6, 2020, where half a million people in nearly 600 places across the nation came together to fight for change. Although some protests have been deemed as riots across the nation, more than 93% of all demonstrations have had no reports of violence or destructive activity. The anger that Americans and people across the globe feel for under-served communities seems unstoppable.
Despite the hefty number of supporters the movement has recently gained, there are critics that have coined “All Lives Matter” and “Blue Lives Matter” to respond to the growing Black Lives Matter movement and some argue that these new slogans minimize the struggles that Black people deal with. Even Donald Trump has called Black Lives Matter a “symbol of hate” in one of his various tweets criticizing the movement and protesters.
Regardless, Black Lives Matter has received support for large corporations and from nations around the world. Netflix, Disney, and Facebook have all spoken against systemic racism and racial injustice and some companies have even donated upwards of $120 million to Black colleges and universities. Most importantly, the protests that have occurred have fueled millions of Americans to vote in the 2020 election coming up. Black Lives Matter’s support has dwindled since June, but their message still stands strong amongst the chaos of the current
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on September 18, 2020 due to metastatic pancreas cancer. She fought her battle with cancer for a decade and was notorious for sharing her workouts with her personal trainer.
Ginsburg was appointed to the Court in 1993 by President Bill Clinton, and served as the leading senior member of the left wing in most recent years, delivering progressive votes on the most divisive social issues to date such as LGBTQ+ rights and abortion.
Ginsburg was only one out of nine women who attended Harvard Law School in 1956, and later transferred to Columbia Law School where she finished her studies. Upon graduating in 1959, Ginsburg was the first in her class despite setbacks and discomfort caused by prominent gender discrimination at the time.
Ginsburg argued six landmark cases on gender equality before the U.S. Supreme Court during the 1970s as the director of the Women’s Rights Project of American Civil Liberties Union. On the Supreme Court, Ginsburg in 1996 wrote the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in United States vs. Virginia, which held that the state-supported Virginia MIlitary Institute could not refuse the admission of women.
Ginsburg’s biggest argument behind her beliefs comes from the Fourteenth Amendment, stating that “equal protection” under the law covered discrimination based on gender. Through this, Ginsburg paved the way for future generations of American women to have the ability to control their financial assets on their own. Before the mid-1970s, women were denied access to their own credit cards. Ginsburg made it so that the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974 could enable women to manage their money on their own.
Against all odds, Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought major adversity to reshape American law and history through her powerful opinions and belief that law is gender-blind. She will forever be remembered as one of the most influential justices to ever step onto the court, and her legacy lives on through her progressive decisions.
The 2020-2021 school year is very different for the Exeter Township School District as they are doing full virtual classes due to the Covid-19 pandemic; although this is not stopping the sports teams.
All sports teams are still having practices and games, even though there are a number of rules and regulations to fit the Covid-19 pandemic. But what do these sports practices and games look like now?
For starters, all events are optional to ensure that the students who are nervous and want to stay home can do so and don't have to go. If students and staff do decide to go, they have to get a covid-19 screening every time they go to a practice or game. Every time a student and coach must get a temperature check and get asked questions about covid-19 and any symptoms they might have.
In regards to games, there are limits to the number of spectators in the stadium or gathering. This includes staff and players from both teams and athletic trainers. For football games that number also includes cheerleaders, marching band, and media. Some teams allow senior parents to be in stands for the game if numbers allow.
Things are not the same as they used to be. A lot of people in the schools and community who want to watch sports events cannot go, but the district is doing a good job of trying hard to live stream and show as much as they can. That way people can feel connected without actually being there.
This year is like no other, but sports are still happening and students can participate which is really beneficial right now as students do not get to go to school and see their classmates. The district is coming up with ways to make these sports safer with still being able to play. Covid-19 is not stopping these sports teams from playing the sport that they love.
Due to the global wide pandemic, the College Board was faced with the decision to either cancel or hold online AP tests this year. According to a survey sent out to AP students, a majority of people were in favor of holding AP tests. Now, there is public outrage towards the College Board for the inexcusable amount of technical issues that troubled students who attempted to submit their answers. The class-action lawsuit, being filed by angry students, calls for the College Board to accept students’ answers rather than having them retake the tests in June and having the College Board fork over $500 million for monetary relief. In the past, the College Board has been criticized for allegedly selling students’ data from College Board exams without students’ knowledge or permission. As of May 17, the College Board gave students a new option to submit answers through email if they have issues with submitting through the College Board website, but this solution does not apply to the students who have already taken their tests. The only option for students who had taken their test before May 17 is to retake the test in June. The College Board retorted the outrage by stating that only 1% of the 2.2 million tests had technical issues, and the company now claims that this lawsuit will not prevail, as there is no legal basis or facts behind the lawsuit.
While everything seems to be quiet around the world amidst the global pandemic, cyclone season started off with bang, with the first storm of the season being the strongest cyclone ever recorded in the history of the Bay of Bengal.
Starting off as a category 5 storm, the cyclone fortunately weakened and made landfall south of Kolkata, India as a category 2 storm with 100 mph winds. Kolkata is home to almost 15 million people and evacuation procedures were challenged, trying to follow COVID-19 safety precautions while getting people to safety. Many of the COVID-19 social distancing rules were broken, as safety shelters were packed to the maximum with little room to move, let alone maintaining six feet of distance.
Cyclone Amphan killed over 80 people with over $13 billion in damage, the costliest storm of the Indian Ocean. Relief efforts are very minimal as of now due to the pandemic’s effect on India’s economy. Many celebrities and other high profile figures from India have been generously contributing to the relief efforts as a result.
The location at which Amphan made landfall is notorious for deadly cyclones because of its geographical shape, heightening storm surge from cyclones. The strongest storm, recorded, before Amphan occurred in 1999, killing 10,000 people in India. Since this storm, both Bangladesh and India have worked together to make better efforts to evacuate its citizens and place storm shelters in the area.
Experts say that climate change may be a reason for such dangerous storms becoming more frequent. Climate change could also explain how quickly such storms increase in intensity as well. For example, Amphan went from a category 1 to a category 5 in just a mere day. Amphan proved to be a dangerous start to cyclone season this year and the citizens of India and Bangladesh are on high alert and weariness of the next potential storm to rock the Bay.
TikTok has always been a place of controversy. From racist videos, to questionable pranks, the platform certain does not discriminate against distasteful content. However, recently a prank was so uncalled for and described as “a new low,” that multiple news platforms as well as the MTA (the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority) have gotten involved.
This all started with a video made by popular TikToker, Josh Popkins, formerly known as fckjoshy, who typically performs questionable pranks within his community of New York City. However, his most recent prank is the one that has received media attention and has even caused a bit of friction between followers and local authority.
The prank in question is of Popkins dropping a tub of fruity pebbles and milk in a NYC subway car. The video shows him cleaning up his mess by scooping handfuls of the fallen cereal and then leaving the train car. His narration indicates that people aboard the train car left the area and were visibly upset by the incident. The MTA has recently tweeted out a string of post following the incident: "A new low: Pulling a prank on essential workers in the middle of a global pandemic. And making essential workers clean up your mess. Despicable."
Popkins has since deleted the TikTok and released an apology video explaining that he will raise money for charities surrounding the Coronavirus on all of his platforms. Here is the MTA’s response: “We’ve received Mr. Popkin’s apology. MTA police have referred this matter to the detective squard. @tiktok_us should ban this user and prohibit reckless stunts like this on trains and buses.”
Though some of his fans have spoken out against Popkins’ actions, a majority of his fanbase has been standing by his side as he receives hate comments and death threats. There has not been any update on the events so far and fckjoshy is still on the platform creating content.
On Friday May 1st, 2020 Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau announced a ban on all “military-style assault weapons” including 1,500 models and variations of firearms. An amnesty period of two years is given to current assault weapon owners. Seven months ago during his campaign for reelection, Trudeau promised to ban military assault weapons and start a buy back program of legally purchased firearms. He also promised to work with provinces and territories to restrict handguns. It was after Canada’s worse mass shooting in over 20 years that Trudeau rushed the Firearms Act with an order-in-council from the cabinet, not through voted legislation.
On April 20th, 2020 a gunman disguised as a RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) officer shot and killed 22 people in different locations over a span of 12 hours. He started in his hometown of Portapique late Saturday night and was shot by police about 58 miles away in Enfield the following morning. One of the long guns the shooter used could be described as a military-style assault rifle, but the gunman used a variety of rifles and handguns illegally obtained in Canada and the U.S.A. Would the current gun ban have prevented the shooting from taking place?
Sadly, no. Trudeau claims assault weapons are made “to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time.” While this may be true, the gunman’s assault rifle isn’t what allowed him to carry out the worst mass shooting in Canadian history. He traveled to separate locations, killing people, some of which he knew, with various weapons. The gun ban put into action would in no way prevent another shooting of this nature from happening.
The gun ban targets weapons such as AR-15s and the Ruger Mini-14, the gun used in a previous mass shooting on École Polytechnique killing 14 women in 1989. The ban does not distinguish between military assault weapons and other long guns such as 12-gauge shotguns, common home defense and hunting weapons.
As expected, the ban is facing great controversy from the Canadian Coalition of Firearms Rights (CCFR) and the Canadian public. On May 5th, an online e-petition against the ban surpassed 100,000 signatures within the first 24 hours of it’s release, the most signatures collected in the shortest amount of time in Canadian history. The CCFR claims the ban is “a wrongful deprivation of liberty arising from an improper exercise of legislative power” suggesting Trudeau is using heinous acts to push his personal agenda and promises. The CCFR have hired a lawyer and intend to pursue legal actions against the ban and the nature of it’s instatement.

As we go through each month in 2020, it seems as though a new problem arises around the world. The newest scare in the U.S. for the month of May is the Vespa mandarinia, better known as the murder hornet.
The murder hornet is a two-inch insect that is much bigger than the average honey bee and was first spotted in late April and early May in Washington State. Murder hornets are a native species to Asia, specifically China, however it is unknown how they came to the U.S. The hornet is especially known for its venomous sting and ability to kill honey bees that are crucial to pollinating plants. Although the murder hornet doesn’t typically go after humans, its venomous sting could go through a beekeeper’s suit. It takes multiple stings to fatally affect a human.
Honey bee populations are already dwindling due to parasites and multiple diseases and these hornets are known to only add to that problem, killing mass colonies of bees, most destructive during fall. But how exactly is it so powerful? Well, typically when these murder hornets seek out and find a bee colony, they leave a scent, telling other murder hornets to come help and raid the colony. The honey bees in Asia try to counteract this by forming a ball of defensive bees for the colony, killing the murder hornet. North American bees do not know of such a tactic for defense.
In addition, numerous more bees are being mistaken for the murder hornets. This has been scaring the residents of Washington State into killing even more of the dwindling population of honey bees. That is why beekeepers are intervening.
Bee keepers are setting entrance traps in hopes of catching the murder hornet before it enters a colony. Another solution presented is increasing the diversity of the honey bees. Since our current honey bees lack the defensive skills to protect themselves, introducing these more aggressive forms of honey bees will allow for better protection and numbers of the honey bee population.
Furthermore, beekeepers and the government are hoping to eradicate the new murder hornet due to the lack of defense of local bees, not to mention its venomous sting that kills over fifty people in Japan each year. Honey bees are crucial to the U.S. Agriculture industry and with their dwindling numbers, our country could be feeling its effects in the near future. So if the murder hornet ever decides to visit Pennsylvania, make sure you aren’t just killing another honey bee!
As the world attempts to halt the spread of Coronavirus, people are sheltering inside their homes and spending more time with their families. Quarantining has provided more time for people to find new hobbies and catch up on sleep, all while causing a decrease in global air pollution.
In China, NASA reports that over 30% of nitrogen dioxide levels have decreased. The drastic halt in transportation and use of fossil fuels has greatly benefited the environment, and the dramatic decrease in nitrogen dioxide levels that China shows proves that air pollution can quickly be reversed.
But, the question that remains is what will be taken from this after Coronavirus is halted. Policymakers will have to focus hard on trying to make sure the decrease in greenhouse gases continues if there is any hope in reversing climate change. China is proof that change can occur, and will occur when people come together to support a cause such as halting the spread of Coronavirus. The hard part now, is convincing those same people to come together to reverse climate change.
On Tuesday April 15, 2020 President Trump announced that the US will “halt funding while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.” The United States is by far the biggest financial contributor to the World Health Organization, offering upwards of $400-$600 million dollars a year. In contrast, China offers a far lesser contribution giving $86 million in 2018-19. To understand why WHO’s funding was cut in the first place, one has to review their actions taken in December.
Taiwan, located 80 miles from China’s eastern coast, emailed the WHO in December with inquiries on person-to-person spread of coronavirus and to warn of the abnormal pneumonia cases in Wuhan at the time. The WHO ignored Taiwan’s information and continued to say there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission as late as January 14th.
The WHO refuses to acknowledge Taiwan as an independent nation, let alone a qualified member of the WHO. When senior WHO advisor Bruce Alyward was questioned about reconsidering Taiwan’s membership, he sat in silence for a couple seconds, claimed to have not heard the question, and then asked to move to another question. He then hung up on the reporter.
Taiwan has handled the coronavirus with the utmost scrutiny and sensible precaution; a country of 23.8 million has a mere 427 confirmed cases with a death count of 6. Taiwan handled the outbreak by inspecting passengers from Wuhan in December, banning Wuhan residents and travel into China in January and Chinese visitation in February. Yet the WHO wouldn’t let Taiwan attend an emergency meeting, the same meeting that determined COVID-19 a pandemic, as an observer, in fear of offending China.
The WHO denounced measures taken by countries, like the US, that included travel bans to combat the spread of coronavirus deeming them ineffective. They praised China’s handling of the pandemic even though China was destroying proof of the virus and silencing whistleblowers in Wuhan, some of which later died. China could have mitigated 95% of its infections if social distancing and quarantines were practiced three weeks earlier. All the actions of the WHO and their involvement with the Chinese government will no doubt be reviewed within the coming months, which will determine if the US will resume funding the WHO. However, the money budgeted for the WHO has since been redirected into the Red Cross and Samaritan’s Purse.

In early March, scientists discovered the smallest known dinosaur from northern Myanmar. Scientists found the fossil trapped in amber, which was 99 millions years old. As the scientists further inspected the fossil, they concluded the dinosaur would be similar to the size of a bee hummingbird. Bee hummingbirds are the tiniest species of bird in the world, and they weigh about 2.5 grams.
The fossil trapped in the amber only had the head which makes it harder for scientists to know everything about this dinosaur. One thing that stuck out to scientists was the eye structure. Many birds have a scleral ring, a ring of bones to support the bird’s eyes. In the new dinosaur’s eye structure, they are spoon shaped which is a common characteristic in some living lizards. Based on how the eye sockets were formed, scientists concluded that the dinosaur would have had exceptional vision.
Scientists also discovered that the new species of dinosaurs were active during the daytime because unlike owls, the eyes were on the side of their head and the opening in the center of the ossicles were narrow. The narrowness of the ossicles restricted the amount of light to enter the eye. The dinosaur’s jaw had many teeth which makes scientists believe the dinosaur was a predator that ate insects.
Inside of the fossil there was a small amount of soft tissue preserved which researchers believe is remains of the dinosaur’s tongue. Once testing is done on the tissue, scientists can get a better picture of how this dinosaur relates to others during its time period as well as other advanced birds.
The new species of dinosaurs was given the name Oculudentavis khaungraae. This name was given to the dinosaur because of the combination of “oculus,” “dentes,” and “avis.” These three words translate to “eyes,” “teeth,” and “bird.” More information will most likely come out on the Oculudentavis species of dinosaurs once scientists have more time to look at the skull and test the soft tissue.
The Coronavirus has affected many parts of our everyday lives. From work to school, people of all ages have had some kind of impact from the virus in the last month.
One of the major topics in society today is climate change and the environment. Throughout the last couple of weeks, there have been small impacts on the environment that have made major changes to the climate.
With the reduction of work, this leads to a domino effect in life. With certain types of work, flying is required. However, recently airplanes have not been flying as much to reduce the spread of the virus. Cars are not being driven to work as often and neither are trains or subways. The change in society's social distancing has had a major effect on global carbon emissions.
In China, the world's largest carbon emitter, emissions have been 25% lower than normal. With the closure of schools, work, and other events, speed traffic has gone down. The reduction in speed traffic has caused a reduction in carbon emissions. Across the country, public transportation has dropped several percentages every week, due to the fear of spreading the virus, or just people staying home more. Since transportation has come to a halt, the lack of emission of greenhouse gasses has been great for the environment.
Now along with the reduction of transportation, what are people doing at home? People are using more electricity -- this comes from heating a home, cooking at home meals, and watching more television -- that is also potentially harming the environment through an explosion in the usage of fossil fuels.
Also, since shopping in person has decreased, many are now shopping online. There has been a peak in online shopping, especially for groceries. Online shopping can lead to adding to one’s carbon footprint due the use of fossil fuels used to make deliveries and keep companies such as Amazon functioning at high efficiency, as well as the extensive use of resources used for packaging.
Now that we have seen very little change in the climate due to the Coronavirus, why have I ever written this article? Though the emissions have gone down and the impact of electricity use has started to level out, other things have changed around the world due to the reduction of human contact with society.
Some crazy impacts have been seen around the world. The famous canals in Venice are finally clear due to the reduction of boat traffic. Air quality in China has increased because of the lack of emissions from fuel-powered vehicles.
Throughout the next couple of weeks, people might see small changes in air quality and the environment. With these small changes to the planet, things are looking up. To contribute, use less electricity and go outside (keeping good social distance practice) and take a walk. There are several trails around Exeter including the Exeter Scenic River Trail, Trout Run Trail, and Neversink mountain. Stay healthy and safe!
There is one night each year where various members of the school come together for one common goal. Students, teachers, and families in the community alike join forces and fight against childhood cancer. Mini-THON has become a tradition at Exeter that proves year after year to bring our school and community together. This year’s Mini-THON held on March 6th into the 7th hosted over 150 students for just over twelve hours to take a stand to support the cause. From 8pm to 8am, students sang, danced, battled against each other during class wars, as well as played fun games to pass the time. For most, the students chose to stand the entire twelve hours, some chose to sit during meals, but all in all, there was a similar pattern of fighting through the tiredness for the kids.
Before the official event started, there was a lot of preparation that had to go into every little detail. Advisors Mrs. Bollinger and Miss Harper along with their team of student leaders including seniors Neha Adda, Bridget McNish, Jon Garcia, Katie Elisher, and Josh Klusewitz, and Juniors, Karleigh Patton, Lana Jordan, Lele Farinelli, and Emily Lakin put hours in each week leading up to the big night. The club members also met each week to prepare for fundraising, registrations, food, sponsors, and entertainment. To say that the club is involved is an understatement. Each and every student involved has a hand in its success.
This year was the biggest year yet for Exeter’s Mini-THON. Not only were there new games and activities incorporated to the usual event, but the fundraising surpassed all previous years. One huge help to reaching and exceeding our goal of $25,000 was thanks to our teachers who participated in Push Weekend. From Friday, February 28th, to Sunday, March 1st, all students and participants were encouraged to raise as much money as possible and for a reward teachers would take on crazy challenges. We were able to raise over $5,000 because of the excitement and dedication along with seeing Mr. Wisniewski in some Harry Potter gear, Mr. Rugg in a tutu, and Mr. Fidler getting his nails painted hot pink. In addition, Mr. Freese had the pleasure of wearing a wedding dress for a day as Mr. Blair dyed his beard bright pink. Mrs. Bollinger and Miss Harper also dyed their hair and Mr. Reese got a tattoo! At the event students were also able to see the science teachers get pies in their faces, Mrs. Rudy donating a foot of hair, and even getting to finally meet Mrs. McCoy’s pig, Rosie. Thanks to all of our courageous teachers, Push Weekend was a true success for all.
While the event itself might seem like a long night to some, we all are there to dance for the kids, especially for our Four Diamonds Family, who shared Elliot’s story and were able to join us for community hour. After hearing about their fight against cancer, the students counted down and took their twelve hour stand. Memories were made, dances were had, games were played, and money was raised. This year, we had a goal of $25,000, but in the end, we raised even more than we had hoped for. $30,892.87; all for the kids. Mini-THON was a true success.
On February 7th, the Exeter Music Department held their second annual Supper Serenade which included dinner and entertainment for the community. Students in the music program from Reiffton through the High School were allowed to perform during the event. Many students sang, played their instruments, or danced, which helped raise money for the foundation. This event was not just to raise money for the music association, it was a night for the younger students to see what they could become with their music education. Many young musicians were inspired by the high school students performing with different groups or solo acts.
Throughout the night there were raffle baskets, and all of the money went straight to the music association to buy new equipment or fund a music sponsored trip. The Senior High School’s Eagleaires performed as one of the raffles; they serenaded the lucky raffle winner by singing “Rhythm of Love.” The Exeter Theater Department also made their appearance by performing one of their songs from the show Mamma Mia. The theater department was promoting their show in March.
The Supper Serenade event was run mainly by students as they were the servers for the night and the performers. The audience enjoyed the numerous acts of music performed by students of all ages. This year, the event was moved to Reiffton from the Senior High School because of the increasing size of the crowd. The association hopes that Supper Serenade’s crowd will increase even more next year and the years to follow.
Just like that, we are already approaching spring, and you know what that means...it’s getting closer to PROM 2020. This year’s prom is set to take place on May 9th from 6-10pm at the Hilton DoubleTree in Reading. And what is a better way to celebrate the new decade of 2020 than with a theme of “The Roaring 20s”?
While there is a lot of preparation that goes into the big night, students have plenty of time to get ready. Ticket sales will be held during the week this year rather than on the weekends. The dates for the sales are Monday, March 30th through Friday, April 3rd with the beginning of the week having morning sales, the middle of the week having after school sales, and ending off the week with lunchtime sales on Friday. Each ticket is $65 and can be purchased by upperclassmen only. Underclassmen can go to the prom only if they are attending as the guests of upperclassmen. Be sure to get all required forms filled out for both students of Exeter and nonstudents of Exeter (if you are taking someone from another school) completed early so that it is an easy process for everyone.
So, the tickets are purchased and the date is on the calendar, but now it’s time to find the look. There are plenty of stores around the area that offer wide arrays of dresses and tuxes. Some of these places include Bella Jules, King of Prussia Mall, Men’s Wearhouse, and several other options. If you are looking for a more cost effective route for something just as beautiful or dapper, you might want to try a consignment shop. The White Pear in Pottsville is a formal wear consignment shop that features both designer and nondesigner dresses that are fit for anyone. Other consignment shops include A Second Time Around right here in Exeter, and even Goodwill. Don’t rule out the options until you see what everyone has to offer. For all the girls out there interested in an amazing opportunity to find a dress, Belle of the Ball is held each year for anyone interested by appointment.
A new program here at the high school to help those wanting to go to prom looking fine while still saving money has been put in place by our own Exeter SHS staff. For anyone interested in finding a tux or dress with no cost, you can see your guidance counselors to view a wardrobe that they have been hard at work collecting. Options of a wide variety of styles, colors, and sizes of formal wear have been donated and collected and ready to find a new home for Exeter students to enjoy at this year’s prom. Be sure to look for the mannequins with the corresponding flyers in the library and guidance area for more information.
Prom is bound to be yet another fun night and memorable experience of the 2020 school year thanks to all involved. Have a roaring good time at this year’s prom.
After many years of concern about recyclable waste here at Exeter Senior High School, steps are finally being taken toward improving the recycling program and becoming a cleaner, more environmentally-friendly school. Ms. Lori Soraporu and the Environmental Club have been teaming up with other clubs, like the Do Something Club, and are working on how to increase awareness about the waste that each individual here at Exeter High School creates.
The first step to becoming a more environmentally-friendly school is, as Ms. Soraparu says, to “know what to throw.” Our school’s trash collectors, Advanced Disposal, may not take our recyclables if the waste doesn’t fit certain criteria. This means that plastic with tin foil on it, plastic with other trash inside it, leftover food or drink inside plastic, and plastic that is not labeled numbers 1-5 will not be accepted by our trash collectors. The Environmental club is working to add six new recycling bins to the school, so it is important that students know what can be thrown in them. Although it may seem like taking the extra steps to recycle your trash isn’t worth it, every little action leads to a big difference.
The Environmental Club has been brainstorming how to educate Exeter students about what can be recycled. This includes making posters and displays about the types of things that can and can’t go in the new recycling bins. However, the biggest obstacle is going to be inspiring students to make a conscious effort to recycle. Many people don’t realize that the plastic we use in our everyday lives can take up to 1000 years to decompose. That’s why it is so important to be aware of the trash we create and where it is going. When plastic gets recycled, the waste that ends up in landfills is reduced. It is easy to think, “What’s one bottle going to change?” But imagine if everyone thought that and decided not to recycle. The truth is that change starts with each individual and their actions. Making an effort can easily lead to new habits being created.
Besides recycling, it is important to try to reduce waste in the first place, not only in school, but in everyday life as well. Bring reusable bags to the grocery store, keep a metal straw in your car to use when you go out to eat, use a reusable water bottle, and use tupperware containers for food on the go instead of plastic zip-loc bags or plastic wrap. In school, try bringing your own water bottle and refilling it at the new water fountain/fill station in the cafeteria. These simple changes can make a world of a difference and will truly help out our planet, and thanks to the Environmental Clubs and its helpers, we can look forward to positive change here at Exeter High School.
