Taking a Step Back from College App Stress

Editor - HAYDEN ADAMS - 3/12/2024

Right now is one of the most stressful times in a senior's life. College application decisions are about to come out and there are a lot of big choices ahead. Compounded with the struggle of FAFSA this year, it has been an especially difficult experience for many. Here are some tips to help you manage your stress.

YOU WILL BE FINE

The first thing to remember is that no matter what happens you will be fine. Be open to more than one college, you may not end up where you expected to, but it is up to you to make the best of it and have the best experience for you. There are opportunities anywhere that you go if you look for them.

DON’T LET IT BE YOUR WHOLE LIFE

Don’t let this process eat up your whole life. Waiting is hard, not knowing is hard, but hyperfocusing won’t change anything. Enjoy what you are doing at the moment, make time for your friends, family, and yourself. Don’t focus so hard on what is going to happen that you miss what is happening right now. Go do something out of your comfort zone, enjoy what is left of high school because you want to remember doing fun things, not just sitting around, biting your nails waiting for decisions to come in.

TALK TO SOMEONE

If you get overwhelmed, talk to somebody. Your friends are probably going through the same or similar emotions, they understand. Find someone who already knows what it was like, an older sibling or friend who graduated in the last few years. They will know what you are going through and might have insight on the process. You are not alone in this. Just take a deep breath, and step back when it gets to be too much. Focus on something that is positive and grounded in your life, that may be your routine, another person or even something mundane like making the bed.

FIND YOUR OUTLET

There are outlets for your stress; it is just a matter of finding what works for you. College applications and all the stress associated with them is just a blip in your life even if it feels all consuming right now.

No matter what happens you will be fine and end up somewhere that works for you, and opportunities you may never have considered before.

Prom Dress Trend Predictions - 2024

Editor - HAYDEN ADAMS - 2/7/2024

It's that time of year again… When your instagram turns from holiday parties and picturesque snowy scenes to prom dresses. Is it a welcome change? Maybe. Is it a stressful one? Usually. Is there anything to stop the bombardment? Absolutely not.

There is never a catch all color for events like these - since people have different styles and what have you - but in researching the popular sales and different websites, these are some trends to look out for this prom season as you search for the perfect dress.

Pastels, pastels, pastels. Looking at the various stores and websites over and over again, you see the recurring pastel color pallet. Sage green and lavender shades are emerging at the top of the charts this year. Corset tops and high slits have been popular over the last few years and will remain so, but now with a new twist, ruffled skirts.

This writer speculates that the off the shoulder, corset top, with a slitted, ruffled skirt will be the most popular dress of the season. This look can be utterly feminine or daring depending on the neckline, color and opacity of the corset.

After looking at pop culture influences that will affect the trends this year, the top influencers in my opinion would be the Barbie movie, Ballad of Song Birds and Snakes - see the skirt of Lucy Gray (Rachel Zegler) - and of course, Taylor Swift.

As with everything else this year, we can compare the trends to Taylor Swift’s Eras. The Prom 2024 Era is Speak Now and Lover. We are going out girly and fun, with a touch of rebellion.

These are the predicted trends for this Prom season, but always stay true to your own style and wear something that makes you feel confident because that is what matters. You’ll probably look back either way and wonder why you wore such a thing, so make sure it’s worth it in the moment.

Changing the Start Time for High Schoolers

The Pros and the Cons

Editor - HAYDEN ADAMS - 2/7/2024

There is a big discussion going on in society right now concerning what time schools should start. In some states such as California there have been laws passed making it so that high school students cannot start school until at least 8:30 am. But what about the rest of us? Should we have a later start time at Exeter?

There is no denying that there are benefits to starting classes later in the day for high schoolers. Study after study have shown that attendance, grades and morale all improved with a later start time. One study even showed that there was a 16.5% decrease in the teenage crash rate when the start time was pushed back.

When polled, 98% of students from Exeter said they would be happy to start later and only 2% said the change wouldn’t be helpful. Emma Howerter said, “I find myself staying up later at night in order to do schoolwork since I work after school and participate in after school activities. If school started later in the day I would have more time to sleep and get ready in the morning.”

Mrs. Gajewski said,“I”m fully supportive of the change. My kids have an 8:00 start time, and we’ve not had any issues with after-school sports or activities. In fact, they enjoy the small bit of extra time in the morning.”

But there are also drawbacks that need to be considered. One would be transportation, for families that have multiple kids in different schools and jobs as well, pushing the start time back would be detrimental. There are a lot of moving parts involved and childcare is already very difficult for a lot of parents, so having kids at home later would be a real challenge. And after school activities going later would not only produce conflict with work schedules but also disrupt home life. Most likely teens would spend the morning getting the rest they need but in the evening they would lose out on family time in the evening.

There are pros and cons to changing the start time for high schoolers, and there are a lot of ripple effects to consider. Overall most students would prefer to start later in the day and get some extra sleep in the morning. Staff was more inclined to look at the bigger picture and the logistical aspects of such a drastic change. If it was a completely unattached decision, most people would like starting later in the day, but as it stands there are just too many different things that will be affected to make this big of a change.

Compelling "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" is a Pleasure to Watch

Editor - HAYDEN ADAMS - 12/1/2023

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the prequel to the Hunger Games series. It follows the story of President Cornelius Snow - played by Tom Blyth - as a young man. This story illuminates not only Snow’s origin story but also that of the Hunger Games itself. Snow is one of the first ever mentors in the games along with his classmates at the Capitol academy. His tribute Lucy Gray Baird - played by Rachel Zegler - is from district 12 and takes the capitol by storm with her charm. They are a dynamic duo that change the nature of the games forever.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set during the reconstruction after the ‘dark days’. It had been ten years since the war between the districts and the capitol, and district 13 is gone along with the Snow family fortune. Cornelius is bound and determined to keep up appearances and achieve his goal of becoming President of Panem. He is shocked and insulted when he is given the girl tribute from district 12-- a slap in the face for someone of his social standing--until she turns out to be a star girl, someone who will be remembered, someone the capitol could grow to love. So with the Plinth Prize and his future on the line, he does everything possible to get her through the games.

Suzanne Collins writes very detailed books, so it can be hard to fit all of the aspects into the movies. In the first three books - four movies - the production team did a very good job translating that into film. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is no exception. The movie stayed very true to the book with only a few minor differences. Overall it was well cast, the one character that fell short in my mind was Sejanus Plinth - played by Josh Andrés Rivera. In the book he is an innocent and sweet character which makes him really lovable, but in the movie he is a lot more angry which takes away from the charm he holds in the book.

Collins did an excellent job of tying this story to the others. There are many family names that would be the parents and grandparents of capitol citizens in the later movies. There are also multiple other references to the first set of movies layered into the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, even the title.

This movie was exciting, entertaining, and emotional. I would recommend it to anyone who loves the original Hunger Games, or anyone who loves action, sci-fi, and adventure. There are some scary and violent scenes, so if you don’t like that then it might not be for you. Overall it was a compelling movie that was a pleasure to watch.

Spend Time with Friends - Ways to Help Celebrate Friendsgiving

Friendsgiving originated in 2007. It is a little holiday celebrated by eating food with friends on or near Thanksgiving. There is no official date for Friendsgiving though. Some people credit Friendsgiving to the show Friends because it inspired the concept of spending the holiday with friends. It is a surprisingly new concept/holiday. If you like Thanksgiving like most and love to hang out with friends too, consider enjoying the Friendsgiving holiday as well!

These are some great recipes that my Aunt uses when she celebrates Friendsgiving!

Cranberry Brie Bites:

Ingredients- 1 tube crescent dough- 8 oz wheel brie

-1 cup whole cranberry sauce - 1/2 cup chopped pecans

-6 sprigs rosemary

Instructions:

Sweet Potato Casserole:

Ingredients -2 1/2, 1b sweet potatoes (peeled and cubed)

-1/2 cup melted unsalted butter -3/4 cup brown sugar

Five Nights at Freddy's Opens to Mixed Reviews

Staff Writer - AMY IPSEN - 11/6/2023

On October 27th, the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie was released in theatres as well as on Peacock to subscribers. The release was met with mixed reviews from fans and general audiences. The film currently stands at 5.6/10 on IMDb and 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even with these debatable reviews, the film broke debut records the weekend it was released.

The film is based off of a widely known game series of the same name, created by Scott Cawthorn. The games follow a security guard, Mike Schmidt, played by Josh Hutcherson in the film, who gets a job at Freddy Fazbears Pizzaria. Soon Mike will discover the secrets that lurk within the animatronics that are the Pizzaria’s main attractions.

The controversy arose when it came to the fans of the games who watched the film. While many “loved it” and thought that it was “amazing”, others were of a different opinion. Some, like Exeter Junior Kira Lahl, said that it was “predictable” as well as “not lore accurate”. Many believed that it should have been more true to the fashion of the games, using its main scare tactic as jumpscares. In general, many believed that the film was over commercialised towards general audiences.

Whether you are a fan or simply looking for a new film to watch, Five Nights at Freddy’s might be a new favourite for you! Or you may leave the theatre agreeing with those who pose criticisms against the film!

“The Walking Dead” universe is back with a brand-new series! The new spinoff, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, focuses on fan-favorite character, Daryl Dixon, and his adventures in France. Dixon meets people along the way and assists them with what they need, but keeps his goal of getting back to his home in America.

Having premiered September 10th of this year, the new spinoff series has shattered AMC+ records, reeling in more viewers than its fellow spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City, which focuses on Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and another fan favorite) and his adventures with Maggie (played by Lauren Cohan) in New York City. Daryl Dixon, played by Norman Reedus, has been a very popular character in the “Walking Dead” universe and his archery skills have become a stamp to his character. Dixon faces many challenges including new types of “walkers”, his enemies trying to make more deadly walkers, having to take care of a boy (who is seen as special) who belongs to a nun he meets in France, and being sought after by an enemy force because he killed a man’s brother. Dixon displays his perseverance and skills throughout the episodes, proving to be a very strong character and living up to his hype.

“The Walking Dead” Universe is set to get bigger, with the release of the spinoff The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live in 2024, as well as renewed seasons for The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will follow beloved Rick Grimes and Michonne, played by Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira, who look to find each other again and return home. With the release of these news shows and seasons, the universe continues to expand, bringing new stories and adventures for characters loved by the fans. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is set to have a special screening for the season finale on October 12, 2023, at New York Comic Con, with the general premiere being Sunday, October 15, 2023. Get ready for more!

Looking for Fall Flavor?

These Items are the Ones to Try

Editor - ADDISON MCKITTRICK - 9/14/2023

When fall starts to come around, the delicious fall-themed food items come out. The undisputed pumpkin spice champion has to be Starbucks— and they did not hold back this year. Their classic (and favorite) Pumpkin Spice Latte continues to dominate the hearts and wallets of Americans everywhere. The Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso and (far superior) Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai Tea Latte, both newcomers, seem to also be fan favorites this year. Either way, you can’t go wrong with any of Starbucks’s fall drinks, if your bank account can handle it.

Dairy Queen’s fall blizzards are a good way to cool off after any possible heat waves that may come. Their Pumpkin Pie Blizzard is a long-running, fan-favorite. While the Snickerdoodle Cookie Blizzard has been around for 32 years, it still is a must-try for anyone who still appreciates ice cream even in cold weather. Dairy Queen is even doing an event from September 11th to the 24th, selling Blizzards for only 85 cents to celebrate the year the Blizzard was invented, 1985.

Tate’s Bake Shop is a cookie brand started in New York. They are known for their crispy cookies and are now even sold in stores like Giant and Target. Tate’s Bake Shop has even introduced its own fall flavor: pumpkin spice. These cookies have that autumn flavor, white chocolate chips, and are even Kosher. Tate’s Bake Shop may be more expensive than your average grocery store cookie, but its “best cookie ever” status makes it worth it.

Quite possibly the most random fall collaboration is between Goldfish and Dunkin’ Donuts making Pumpkin Spice Grahams Goldfish. They are reminiscent of Dunkin’ Donuts’s pumpkin spice donut, with hints of nutmeg, pumpkin, and donut glaze. This treat may be sold out online, but you can find them for a limited time at Target, Walmart, Giant, and more!

Activate Those Thinking Caps

A common misconception surrounding the brain is that we only use 10% of its capacity. While that statement is false, we all have some untapped reserves of mental acuity in our brain that can be harnessed.

The first thing we can do to harness this brain power is to limit distractions. These include the obvious ones such as our phones, but even multitasking can lead to “attention residue”. Sophie Leroy, assistant professor of business at the University of Washington, explains when you ask your brain to go from one task to another, it struggles to discard the first and move on to the next. As this clutter builds up, more mistakes are made and our productivity and performance decrease.

To sharpen our focus, it is important to schedule uninterrupted time to focus on the tasks that need completion. If this means putting away your phone, taking a few minutes to meditate, or even going on a quick walk to put yourself in the frame of mind to complete these tasks, find what works best for you.

Our brains are amazing tools that are capable of many things, and we need to learn how to harness its greatest potential.

Creed Trilogy is a Knock Out

Staff Writer - LUKE CERRA - 3/30/2023

The Creed movies have left an unquestionably great impact on boxing fans throughout the United States. The movie series began in 2015 with the making of Creed I, which centered around the story of a man named Adonis Creed, son of famous boxing legend Apollo Creed. Adonis is brought up in a world without his father and a distant relationship with his mother.

Creed I

In Creed I, Adonis meets arguably the greatest boxer of all time, Rocky Balboa, who’s relationship with Apollo grew over time in the 1980s. Adonis wants Rocky to train him and help him become the new heavyweight champion of the world. After originally having doubts, Rocky agrees to train Adonis into fighting shape and become a great boxer.

**Spoilers Ahead!**

Throughout the film, Rocky starts to believe Adonis has what it takes to be just as special as his father was, making the training so much more impactful. The first movie culminates with a great fight between Adonis and “Pretty Ricky” Ricky Conlan, the current undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. The fight incredibly goes the distance, ending with Conlan being knocked to the canvas by Creed, but the bell unfortunately saves him and Conlan retains his heavyweight champion status. Creed I laid the foundation for Adonis Creed’s legacy and what he would become someday.

Creed II

Made in 2018, the second movie features a new enemy, a man whose last name needs no introduction to the boxing world. Drago. Viktor Drago. He is the son of former Russian boxer Ivan Drago, notorious for killing Apollo Creed in the boxing ring in 1985. Now over 30 years later, Viktor is following in his father’s footsteps and fulfilling a boxing career.

Adonis obviously has pure hatred for anyone named “Drago”, so when he heard that the two were flying all the way to Philadelphia from Russia for Viktor to challenge Adonis to a fight, he knew he had to take it, even if history wasn’t exactly on his side. Rocky is opposed to the idea, so Adonis ends up taking the fight without him in his corner.

In the first fight, Adonis was no match for Viktor. Viktor’s power and strength was too much for Adonis and the fight ended in severe injuries for Adonis. Due to an illegal strike, Drago was disqualified and no one truly won the fight. Rocky realizes he made a mistake not being by Adonis’ side, so he goes to make things right, and decides to train him for the rematch. The second fight started very similar to the first, but Adonis was able to make adjustments and outlast the tall Russian and take back his heavyweight champion belt.

Creed III

Five years later, on March 3, 2023, Creed III was released in movie theaters all over the world. In this movie, the plot is totally different. Rocky Balboa is not in the picture at all, yet the directors and producers did a great job of making the movie just as exciting.

Adonis, now retired, has opened a gym in Los Angeles and trained many capable boxers. His childhood comes back to haunt him when an old friend, Damien Anderson, shows up at the gym to see Adonis and catch up. Adonis finds out things about Damien he never knew, which turns their friendship totally upside down. The two long time friends end up dueling it out in the ring to determine who the best really is.

This Creed film definitely has more raw emotion and intrigue than the previous two films largely because of the difference in plot and climax. Creed III is a great movie and those who haven’t seen it yet need to get out to the theaters as soon as possible.

TV Shows to Look Forward to in 2023

With the new year starting comes new tv shows for all to enjoy. Some shows have already been released to great success with audiences, while others are to come out later in the year with much anticipation. While there are many new shows to look forward to, some of the world’s favourite shows are renewing for a new season this year. Make sure to look out for these shows this year!

New Shows of 2023:

The Last of Us

January 15 (HBO Max)

Since its release in January, The Last of Us has seen great success. Based on the video game by the same name, The Last of Us follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in a dystopian future where the world has been wiped out by a pandemic. With only six episodes under its belt, the show has been already deemed by fans and critics alike as one of the best shows of 2023.

Daisy Jones and the Six

March 3 (Prime Video)

Highly anticipated, Daisy Jones and the Six is to come out in March as a Prime miniseries. Starring Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Suki Waterhouse, and more! The show is based on the book by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The show will follow Daisy Jones and her rise to fame in a blues-rock band in the 70’s.

Agatha, Coven of Chaos

Winter 2023 (Disney+)

After the success of WandaVision, Marvel’s beloved villain, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) is back with her own spinoff. Little is known about the show just yet, only known to be released in Winter of 2023, but fans can barely contain their excitement.

Shows with new seasons:

The Mandalorian, season 3

March 1 (Disney+)

The Mandalorian follows Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), a bounty hunter across the galaxy as he is set out with Grogu (more famously known as Baby Yoda). This season is said to follow Din as he returns to his home planet of Mandalore. Now on its third season, the fans are anxiously awaiting its release.

Outer Banks, season 3

February 23 (Netflix)

The Outer Banks will follow the Pogues in their third season after they have left their hometown after the suspenseful ending of season 2. The fans have had to wait for a while since the release of season 2 in July of 2021, but are thrilled that the third season is coming out soon.

You, season 4

February 9 (part one), March 9 (part two), (Netflix)

You, after being nominated for Best Villain of the year in 2022 by MTV, is returning for its fourth season. The season release has been split in two, with the first half of the season being released on February 9th and the second half to be released on March 9th. The show's cult-like following has already rated the show highly and are excited for the second release of season 4.

The Best Community Episodes Ranked

Staff Writer - ADDISON MCKITTRICK - 2/22/2023

Community is a TV Sitcom airing from 2009 to 2015. Jeff Winger (played by Joel McHale) is an ex-lawyer who, after getting his degree revoked, must attend Greendale Community College. There he meets an interesting and diverse group of people and they form the study group. This group would go on to have quirky adventures over six seasons and a (future) movie. My ranking is entirely biased, and yet completely true.

When looking at any list of the best Community episodes, Remedial Chaos Theory is almost always first, for a good reason. A party at Troy's (Donald Glover) and Abed’s (Danny Pudi) apartment leads to seven branching timelines. Even those who haven’t seen Community have probably seen references to the “darkest timeline” or Troy’s reaction to his apartment on fire.

Halloween TV episodes encapsulate the holiday's best parts— the spooky atmosphere, the fun costumes, and the scares! Epidemiology hits the mark on all of these when, at Greendale’s Halloween party, a zombie virus breaks out and the study group must figure out how to survive. This episode’s fun character interactions and use of every ABBA song I know put it in the second spot.

The first season of Community had the first paintball episode, Modern Warfare. While it started the trend of paintball episodes and had great Die Hard references, its successor had better action, more paint, and higher stakes. If it wasn’t obvious by now, this show is full of allusions to popular TV and movies, and the two paintball episodes of season two were no different, being both excellent spoofs of western movies and Star Wars

When Abed wakes up to realize everything is animated in claymation like those old Christmas movies, the study group must figure out how to help him work through his mental break. This episode’s unique animation, festive songs, and dig into the series Lost make “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas” the best Community holiday episode.

This episode deals with the death of a member of the study group. While the episode itself is pretty good, the table read done by the cast and Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal is top-notch. Pascal’s complete breakdown during the bequeathings makes this an absolute watch for fans of not only Community but also Pedro Pascal.

Where to Find Affordable Prom Dresses This Year

Staff Writer - MALENA SCHNEIDER - 2/22/2023

Although it feels like homecoming was yesterday, prom season is somehow upon us once again. Throughout all the excited chatter about prom, you may find yourself stressed out about where to find a date, the perfect photo opp. destination, and most importantly, a dress. This article might not be able to help you find a date to prom, but it guarantees that you will show up in style, and not have to break the bank for it!

As many of us know, prom dresses are usually not cheap. Ranging from as low as $50 to as high as $1000+ for some dresses, it can be hard for a high school student making minimum wage to afford prom dresses that are stylish without sacrificing affordability, or vice-versa. Here is a list of sites where you can find dresses that are both stylish and affordable for the 2023 prom season under $150.

Oh Polly has a variety of gorgeous dresses for any occasion that are perfect for prom! Dresses here range from $18 (on sale) to $102. In addition to Oh Polly’s affordability, they have a huge variety of styles from basic to embellished, making this a great spot for anyone.

Lucy in the Sky is a very popular online site for prom and homecoming dresses. Lucy in the Sky has a truly amazing selection of fashionable and unique dresses. Dresses from Lucy in the Sky range from $65-$120.

Rent the Runway is a very underrated and special source for dresses! This is a unique spot because at RTR, you can literally rent the runway! On this site, you can browse dresses from countless designer brands. The cool thing about RTR is that instead of paying thousands of dollars for a designer gown, you can rent a new designer garment for prom, and then send it back when you’re done with it, so you aren’t left with an expensive prom dress that you’ll never wear again. Rentals here range from $30-$325.

Another familiar favorite, Windsor is always a reliable source to find high quality formal dresses for an affordable price. At Windsor, you can find beautiful and one of a kind dresses for a great price! Prom dresses at Windsor range from $10-$300.

Going into the New Year, we all have things we look forward to doing, or in this case, watching. There are many films coming out this year, a select few that are very anticipated worldwide. Some will be sad and traumatic, others happy and fun, and some inspiring.  These are some of the most anticipated movies coming out this year.

Marvel’s newest film marks the start of its new Phase 5 and the 3rd Ant-Man installment. Main characters Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd, and Hope van Dyne, played by Evangeline Lilly, continue their heroic lives following the events of Avengers: Endgame. The movie continues to follow the new exploration of the multiverse, along with the newly introduced quantum realm. Paul and Hope develop a new device that sends a signal to the quantum realm. They get sucked into the quantum realm by mistakes and deal with all the trials and troubles that lurk there.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

April 7, 2023

Our beloved Mario characters have been put into a movie! Just like the videogame, Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), and Toad (Keegan Michael-Key) take on the daunting task of rescuing Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) from Bowser (Jack Black). I doubt this movie will be anything short of entertaining, especially with this fun cast. You best believe I will be watching.

The Little Mermaid

May 26, 2023

Disney’s newest live princess movie adaption takes to the screens! Starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, the movie takes a step towards more diversity in lead-role Disney movies. As before, Ariel will face picking between a prince or her voice for her happiness. Though Disney’s live-action movies don’t have the best track record, this Ariel is set to make a difference and inspire young children to dream.

Creed III

March 3, 2023

The “Rocky” franchise continues with Michael B. Jordan playing Adonis Creed. This movie is the third and final installment of the Creed trilogy. Adonis Creed will be stepping into the boxing rink with Damian Anderson, played by Jonathan Majors, to fight as Damian sets out to prove his worthiness. Adonis must put his life on the line to fight his childhood friend Damian. Will Creed lose everything?

Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3

Volume 3 marks the end of the Guardians trilogy. This movie is set to get more emotional and deep with the characters. Rocket Raccoon, played by Bradley Cooper, gets to shine in this installment. Flashbacks of his past are a key part of the film, likely leading to him and his Guardian friends defeating his enemy together perhaps for the last time. Brace yourselves for this one; it’s gonna be sad.

Dune: Part Two

November 17, 2023

Dune is back with an even more stacked cast! Starring Austin Butler, Timotheé Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, and more. Dune: Part Two is destined to be just as great as the first one. It follows the events of Dune: Part One, and brings the storyline to a close.

Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse

June 2, 2023

The sequel to Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse is set to release this summer. Miles Morales, played by Shamiek Moore, continues to explore his life as Spider-Man. More characters, including more Spider-Men, are set to be introduced in this movie, as it does deal with the Multiverse. This colorful, moving, action-packed movie is sure to be a grab this year as the amazing storyline continues.

Barbie

July 21, 2023

This film is definitely a more interesting one. I mean…it’s about dolls. Played by Margot Robbie, Barbie is set to be a unique and fun movie showing Barbie’s life in our own world. She faces trials after being banished from Barbieland for not being pretty enough and sets out to our world to find the happiness she yearns for.  The “Barbie” doll has had a great influence on pop culture for many generations. Perhaps this movie will have one too.

Dahmer Show Proves Controversial

Editor - CHARLOTTE DOLENA - 10/24/2022

Netflix’s highly streamed Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has sparked a lot of controversy as it has brought the crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer back into the light.

Jeffrey Dahmer was a serial killer who lived from 1960 to 1994. He was convicted of the murders and dismemberments of 15 men and boys, many of whom were of color and LGBTQ. He also committed cannibalism and necrophilia. He was eventually sentenced to 15 consecutive life sentences which he was serving until he was beaten to death by a fellow inmate.

The disturbing and traumatizing nature of Dahmer’s crimes is one of the main reasons that the series is receiving so much backlash now. Many question why this tragic situation is being brought back up, especially because Jeffrey Dahmer, played by Evan Peters, is being seen as sexualized by some people, rather than being recognized for his crimes.

Complaints have been made online about how there was no consent given to Netflix from some real people depicted in the show. Due to this, users believe that Netflix does not care about spreading awareness of the situation, but more about making a profit. Netflix is also being criticized for placing the show in the “LGTBQ” category, which usually contains more uplifting and positive content. Watchers are upset because placing this show in that category could give “LGBTQ” a bad image. The show’s accuracy is being questioned as well.

While this show is extremely disturbing and saddening, it is also really eye-opening. Even if some points are false, the immensely frustrating struggle of Glenda Cleveland (Niecy Nash), Dahmer’s Black neighbor, exposes the factors that led to Jeffrey Dahmer being able to commit the atrocities that he did. The ignorance from the police towards the problems of people of color and LGBTQ people, plus the fact that Dahmer was a white man, definitely let him reign free for longer.

Disputes over the resurfacing of Jeffrey Dahmer and his victims highlight the possible mistake that creating this series was, despite the showing of the lack of action taken by police that is often not discussed.

Gothic Literature and its Influence on Today's Halloween

Staff Writer - AMY IPSEN - 10/24/2022

As Halloween approaches each year, so does the resurgence in the interest in Gothic literature. Many themes in these stories carry over into today's modern horror trends. Themes explored within these works delve into the fascination people have with the macabre. These pieces all have one main goal- to scare people.

The first gothic novel can be traced back to The Castle of Otranto by Horace Wolpole in 1764. From then on more and more books were written playing on superstition and fear. From this explosion in intrigue in gothic compositions, literary greats were born, such as Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, E.A. Poe, H.P Lovecraft, etc.

Many creatures that are now well known in horror culture can be found in gothic works back in their prime. Vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, zombies, take your pick, they can probably be found in today's Halloween culture! As time went on, gothic literature branched out into different subgenres. Now gothic and horror media exist in contemporary forms. The modern gothic literature genre includes works such as If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio, The Little Friend by Donna Tartt, Long Black Veil by Jennifer Finney Boylan, and many more. Although, arguably one of the best known series that has come out of the concept of gothic literature would be Twilight. A contemporary novel series based on vampires that live in a small isolated town in Washington.

So, if you are looking for something dark and mysterious to read this Halloween, perhaps look into reading a gothic classic. Or perhaps a contemporary gothic piece would be more to your liking. Either way, get into your Halloween spirit with a good book.

Foods that Boost Brain Function

While there is no one specific food that helps to boost brain function, there are foods that you can work into your diet everyday to support your memory and help boost the function of your brain. Researchers have found that the foods that help boost brain function are also the foods that protect your heart and blood vessels. I found a few foods and drinks that have been shown to boost brain function and discuss them down below.

The first foods that help boost brain function are green, leafy vegetables. These include spinach, kale, broccoli, etc. Foods that are plant-based have been found to slow down cognitive decline.

Fatty fish is also an excellent food source when trying to boost brain function. The best choices of fatty fish are salmon, cod, canned light tuna, and pollack because they are low in mercury.

A study by Harvard’s Bringham and Women’s Hospital found that women who ate two or more servings of strawberries and blueberries each week were able to delay their memory loss by over two-and-a-half years.

Consuming tea and coffee is also a great way to boost brain function. While you may think caffeine has just a short term effect, research has shown that it can have long term effects as well. A study done by The Journal of Nutrition found that participants scored better on mental function tests after having tea or coffee. Another study done by Johns Hopkins University revealed that participants who consumed caffeine were able to identify more images correctly than the participants who did not consume caffeine.

Finally, walnuts are a great food to boost brain function. Walnuts contain alpha-linoleic acid which has been found to lower blood pressure and clean your arteries. This helps not only your brain, but your heart as well.

Study Hacks for Exam Season

Spring is a time that is filled with blooming trees, sporting events, sunshine, and…exams! Lots and lots of exams. Students’ schedules are hectic during this time of year, and fitting in extra study time is not always an easy task. That is why it is important to study smarter, not harder. Whether it is AP exams, finals, or even small quizzes, the following tips will help you study in the most effective way possible, helping you finish the school year on a high note.

Finding how you personally like to study takes time and effort, because there are many different studying techniques. However, whichever technique you choose, there are certain things that are essential to any method of studying.

For example, the first tip when studying is to limit your distractions. You can’t fully focus when your phone is buzzing every five seconds, so turn your phone on “do not disturb” and place it somewhere out of your sight while you are studying. This way, you will be able to focus and get done much faster.

Another tip for studying is to be organized. Make sure you take legible notes during class, place your papers in a neat folder or binder, and have a clear space to study. A clean space is a clean mind, which will definitely help you retain more information.

Many high school students tend to procrastinate when it comes to studying. However, this is a habit to kick. The earlier you start studying, the better you will perform on the test. By simply reviewing your notes for five minutes before bed, you will notice that when exam time comes you will have retained the information much better than if you had simply crammed the night before.

As of the actual studying process, many students don’t know what works best for them. Methods to try include making a quizlet, rewriting your notes by hand, and making flashcards. If none of these appeal to you, then try simply rereading your notes and looking over worksheets for short bursts of time. A common method called the Pomodoro technique suggests intense focus for 25 minutes, followed by a five minute break. This process is repeated however many times it takes to review the information you need.

However you decide to study, when exam day comes the most important thing you can do is take a deep breath and have confidence! Remember that no single test is the end of the world and that all you can do is try your best. With that being said, happy studying and good luck!

How to Make Irish Potato Candy

Staff Writer - MADISON MONROE - 3/35/2022

Irish potato candy is a treat made in Philadelphia. Irish potato candy isn’t made out of potatoes like the name suggests, it is made of coconut buttercream inside and a cinnamon coating on the outside. The candy has been around for over 100 years in Philadelphia, Oh Ryan’s is the most well known company that makes the potato candy. They have been making those delicious treats since 1989, 90% of their sales have been made in Philadelphia.

In order to make this delicious candy, you’ll need the following ingredients:

-¼ cup of softened butter

-4 oz of cream cheese

-3 cups of powdered sugar

-1 tsp of vanilla extract

-14 oz of sweetened coconut

-approximately 2 tbsp of cinnamon

Steps:

“In a large bowl, cream the butter and cream cheese until light and fluffy. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla, beating until combined. Mix in the coconut.

With a small cookie scoop, measure out balls of the mixture. Roll gently in your hands to smooth and place on a cookie tray covered in parchment paper. Lightly cover the tray and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Candies will be easier to roll when cold and just slightly dried this way.

On a small plate, sprinkle cinnamon. To avoid overly coating the candies, sprinkle about a teaspoon of cinnamon onto the plate at a time. Roll coconut cream balls in the cinnamon, lightly coating. Add more cinnamon to the plate as necessary. Store Irish potato candies in the refrigerator until ready to eat.”

Have a good St. Patrick's Day, and enjoy some homemade Irish Potato Candy!

What is all this Wordle?

Editor - HAILEY KEPERLING - 3/34/2022

Over the past few months, Wordle has been revolutionizing the morning routines of thousands across the nation. Wordle provides its users with a daily challenge: guessing a unique 5-digit word in only six tries. While it initially began as a game for its creator Josh Wardle’s wife, it has now become a global hit with an audience of over 2 million! But that’s not where it ends. Wordle’s impact has inspired many other creative individuals to produce their own versions of Wordle. Nerdle for math, Globle for geography, Gordle for the NFL, and Star Wordle for Star Wars are only a few of the many spin-offs of the original Wordle.

No matter what type of person you are, you can be sure that there is a “Wordle” for you. Are you an avid NBA or MLB fan? If so, perhaps Poeltl (NBA) or WARdle (MLB) is the game for you. Maybe you are a huge Taylor Swift fan? Try Taylordle for a daily Taylor Swift-related word. Perhaps neither of these two floats your boat, but you really wish Wordle was a little bit more challenging. If this is the case, try Quordle to solve 4 words at once or Octordle for 8 words!

Check out the complete list of alternative versions of Wordle to try out below. And in the meantime, keep Worldling away!

Nerdle: Guess a mathematical equation in six tries

Taylordle: Taylor Swift-related word

Octordle: Solve 8 wordles at once

Poeltl: Guess the NBA player

WARdle: Guess the MLB player

Gordle: Guess the NFL player

CFBordle: College football-related words

Globle: Guess a country based on the relative locations of other countries

Worldle: Same concept as Globle

Quordle: Solve 4 wordles at once

Lordle of the Rings: Lord of the Rings guesses

Absurdle: similar to Wordle but gives very little information; sometimes changes the word

Primel: Guess prime numbers

Star Wordle: Guess Star Wars terms

Heardle: Guess songs using audio cues

Spring and Summer Fashion is around the Corner

Staff Writer - MIRANDA DOBRON - 3/1/2022

If you ever wonder what to wear each season, the best way to get ideas is to watch the season's fashion week. The 2022 spring/summer fashion week featured pops of color, monochromatic sets, suits, and more. Each fashion house kept their iconic designs but reimagined them as a fresh 2022 look. After fashion week, new trends began to form off the runway to prepare for spring.

In the fall of 2021, spring/summer fashion week occurred. High fashion houses including Chanel, Dior, Bottega Veneta, and Saint Laurent held runway shows to display their new designs. Saint Laurent’s runway was right by the Eiffel Tower and Chanel’s was a replica of old 90s sets. The well known brand, Dior, designed monochromatic garments that went off their past themes. Chanel had two runway shows (Haute Couture and ready-to-wear) which showcased everyday wear and looks that could be seen on the red carpet.

Not everyone can afford an off the runway look, but most looks influence new trends and ideas in the fashion industry. Suits, matching sets, monochromatic looks, and comfortable clothing are pieces that anyone can buy. These garments can be adapted into a new look by any brand. However, some can become micro trends which don’t last long and are bad for the industry. Skirts will become a bigger trend after Moschino’s new line “Ladies who lunch.” This spring and summer, expect bright lively colors and the classic neutrals.

Once warmer weather hits, most runway looks will be worn and the new trends will spark. Fashion week 2022 is just another way for the consumer to explore their new style.

How to Thrift Like a Pro

Staff Writer - HAYDEN ADAMS - 3/1/2022

Second-hand clothes sometimes are mistaken as something that is undesirable, but that is absolutely not the case. When you buy something second hand you are not only giving your bank account a break but also the planet. There are countless garments in circulation in the world, some in better condition than others, but there is no reason to always buy brand new things. You can find classics or things that you would never have expected at a thrift store, but there is an art to finding things that you love so here are some tips on the best ways to thrift for clothes.

One: Patience, thrift stores are not like retail stores where everything is in a section in a variety of sizes and colors. You often have to sort through racks of clothes that have been disheveled by other customers and the constant shifting of merchandise in the store. It can take you a while to find what you are looking for so have patience and keep looking. Know when to give up, sometimes you won't find what you are looking for that day, but don’t worry about it; come back the next day and it might be there.

Two: Go in with a plan, thrifting can be like grocery shopping on an empty stomach, you find so many great things but then when you get home you realize you don’t really need or have space for what you bought. So have an idea of what you are looking for that means looking for a certain color, brand, cut or pattern. It will make your thrifting much easier because you can scan the aisles until you see something that fits the criteria without having to check every item.

Three: Make sure it fits; there is nothing worse than finding the perfect thing and then realizing it doesn’t fit. Usually there will be some sort of dressing room, but it is a good idea to wear form fitting clothes like leggings or spandex and a tank top that you can try clothes on over in case there isn’t a dressing room. Even if there is, it makes it easier to change.

Four: Have fun with it! Make a day out of it and go to multiple stores; bring your friends and have a fashion show. There are so many options, classics that have been reimagined or something with a $200 price tag still on it. You never know. So maybe the next time you go by a thrift store, stop in and see if you find the garment that was meant for you.

Trust Your Gut

Editor - ANYA WHITMAN - 3/1/2022

If you are someone who is conscious about what they eat, exercise, and living an overall healthy lifestyle, you may think that staying healthy is relatively simple. Eat clean, workout, get enough sleep, simple enough, right? However, maintaining good health is much more complex than many may think; it actually deals a lot with our gut and hormones as well.

The gut refers to the digestive tract in the body, and includes many organs responsible for digestion, starting all the way up at our mouths. Within the gut, there are tons of healthy bacteria, called microorganisms, that inhabit our intestines and colon. These microorganisms are an important part of our health because they break down our food, allowing it to be converted into the essential nutrients that our bodies need. The gut also protects us from viruses, fungi, and infectious bacteria.

But the gut impacts so much more than just digestion. In fact, over 90 percent of serotonin is produced in the gut. That’s why if your gut is out of whack, it can cause symptoms ranging from depression and anxiety to insomnia and even diabetes. So how can we make sure that we are giving our guts what they need to thrive?

The most obvious answer is to eat a varied diet with tons of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Doing so will create a healthy environment for the good bacteria in our bodies. Prebiotic and probiotic foods also are essential to maintaining a healthy gut. Prebiotics include almonds, bananas, apples, broccoli, flax seeds, etc, while probiotics include anything that is fermented, like sauerkraut, kimchi, or kombucha. It’s also important to avoid taking antibiotics, as these harm the healthy bacteria in our guts.

While you are seriously helping your gut thrive with every healthy meal, it’s also important to avoid certain ingredients. For example, you may think that your Diet Coke is a better alternative to a regular soda, but in reality it contains artificial sweeteners that are wreaking havoc on your gut. Sugar substitutes like aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, and stevia have been shown to be damaging to the beneficial bacteria in our bodies. The sad part is that many low-calorie drinks, sugar-free coffee syrups, and chewing gums use these ingredients.

Our guts are a huge part of what keeps us healthy and feeling our best, so taking measures to keep them in good condition is most definitely not a waste of time. So if you are pondering how to start living a healthier lifestyle, remember to trust your gut!

Criminal Minds to Return to Netflix

Staff Writer - JILLIAN GAPPA - 3/1/2022

Criminal Minds, one of the most popular shows on Netflix, is coming back for a revival. Many fans, including myself, are extremely excited.

If you don’t know what Criminal Minds is, I’ll tell you. Criminal Minds follows a group of elite FBI profilers who analyze criminal’s minds in order to catch the unsub (unknown subject - the person the profilers are trying to catch). Each member of the team brings their personal expertise to identify stressors, triggers, motivations, etc. Usually, this leads them to the culprit.

Every episode involves the team solving a different case. The variety of these cases is very interesting to me. The show can go from abductions and robberies, to illegal amputations and an unsub making human marionettes. Some of my favorite episodes are “The Lesson”, “Mosley Lane”, “Zugzwang”, and “Green Light / Red Light”. Some of these episodes are directed by Matthew Gray Gubler, who plays Spencer Reid. He directed some of the creepiest, yet best episodes of Criminal Minds in my opinion.

Criminal Minds consists of 15 seasons. The first episode aired on September 22, 2005, and the last episode was on February 19, 2020. Throughout 15 years, the team has changed almost consistently, with actors leaving and joining. The team as of season 15 is Joe Mantegna (David Rossi), Matthew Gray Gubler (Spencer Reid), A.J. Cook (Jennifer Jareau), Kirsten Vangsness (Penelope Garcia), Daniel Henny (Matthew Simmons), Aisha Tyler (Dr. Tara Lewis), Adam Rodriguez (Luke Alvez), and Paget Brewster (Emily Prentis).

Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster have all agreed to come back for the revival, which is going to be 10 episodes. However, Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henny have not signed any contracts or closed any deals to come back. Henny is filming another season for The Wheel Of Time, but I believe it’s possible for him to guest star in an episode. There have been multiple social media posts relating to a Q&A for Gubler’s new movie King Knight. He said that the Criminal Minds reboot conflicts with his new projects, so he can’t come back to the revival. As I stated before, I still think it’s possible for Gubler to guest star in one of the episodes. A lot of fans, including myself, are saddened by this news. Matthew Gray Gubler’s Spencer Reid is one of the most popular characters on the show, and is my favorite character. Many people love Gubler, so I believe that there’s a chance that the reboot might not do well. I will definitely still watch the reboot, but many people, like me, have lost their favorite character.

Why You Should Keep a Journal

Editor - ANYA WHITMAN - 1/31/2022

What if there was a simple way that you could improve your life, gain accountability, learn about yourself and your thoughts, and strengthen your brain? Well, the good news is that there actually is a way to do all these things, and it doesn’t require anything besides a pen and some spiral bound paper. You guessed it, journaling is how you can achieve all these benefits and more, but let’s delve into this topic further.

You may be doubting that journaling can actually help you, or maybe you are adamant that you simply do not have enough time. However, the facts about why journaling is something everyone should do might change your mind. Not only has journaling been a pastime for centuries, but some of the most brilliant minds in history kept journals, like Charles Darwin, Leonardo Di Vinci, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, and the list goes on.

So why do people keep journals? There are many answers to this question, but one of the main reasons is to alleviate stress by using it as an outlet of overwhelming thoughts or emotions. Not only does this help to become more aware of our inner-feelings, but it helps us heal and move on from those that are no longer serving us.

But journaling doesn’t have to be about our emotions. Journalists also record their thoughts on everyday things, allowing them insight into the creative parts of their minds. Journaling can also be used as a tool to remember special moments, like monumental events in our lives, vacations, achievements and more. By recording moments like this, not only do you boost your memory, but you also create what is like a time-capsule, allowing you to look back on and see how far you have come, say five years from now.

Another extremely important use to journaling is the ability to create goals and plans. Sometimes, life can be overwhelming. Creating long and short-term goals allows us to both see the bigger picture and appreciate the “small victories” of our everyday lives.

If you are still not convinced to get writing, then maybe the fact that journaling can even help your physical body will be enough to change your mind. For example, journaling has been shown to improve immune system function, lower blood pressure, and improve liver functionality. While this seems far-fetched, the truth is that taking care of your mental health can have remarkable effects on your physical well-being as well. So what do you say? Are you ready to give journaling a go?

Screen Time Observations

Staff Writer - CHARLOTTE DOLENA - 1/31/2022

The average American spends up to five hours on their mobile phone. The average teenager spends up to nine hours looking at a screen, both for entertainment and education.

A screen time observation poll asked students what app they spend the most time on. Choices included popular social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Youtube, Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Twitter. An “other” option brought in results from Apple Music, Spotify, and Netflix. The most popular app used by teenagers according to studies is TikTok. The poll supported this finding, with Tiktok being the most used app with 41 votes taking 29.1%. Closely following TikTok at 28.4% is Snapchat, which is then followed by Youtube at 23.4%. Aside from most of the other apps receiving one or two votes, Instagram received 11 votes taking 7.8% and Spotify received nine votes taking 6.4%.

Obviously, evolving technology causes everyone to be surrounded by devices and screens almost all the time. However, the amount of time that the average person spends on their phone is unhealthy and excessive. A goal to work up to is just spending two to two and a half hours on devices daily. One method to reach this goal is simply doing day-to-day activities without your device. For example, try having a meal without a phone. Another idea is just prioritizing your responsibilities, and this can be done by making a list or schedule. Planning out when events are happening or when assignments are due is a great habit to develop for productivity. Putting devices in a room outside of the bedroom can also help reduce screen time. One last suggestion is just exploring the physical world rather than a virtual one; try going outside for a walk with family or pets. In the end, too much screen time can lead to many mental and physical health issues that just aren’t worth it.

How to Fight Senioritis

Seniors, it felt like 2022 was just that year that would never actually come. “Graduate? Who, me? No way.” was what most of us thought during the first couple years of high school. But guess what, the year is 2022, and in the next five months we will be completely done with high school. We will be walking out those classroom doors for the last time, feeling the highs and lows of emotion, and saying goodbye to our time at Exeter Senior High School.

Whether the thought of this makes you bubble with joy or makes your eyes water is subjective. However, almost everyone can agree that the majority of seniors are feeling what is known as Senioritis. We are so close to the finish line, it makes us want to just be there…now! We’ve been working hard for so long, why keep going right? We are ready for the next thing, college, a job, anything BUT high school. Many of us have been accepted to our dream schools and already have the next four mapped out in our minds. So let’s just skip to June 8, right? Or at least May? Unfortunately, time doesn’t work like that. But maybe a change in mindset can help those suffering from Senioritis to look at this time as more than just something to get over with.

Yes, it’s true that us seniors have been going through high school for quite a while now. Although it feels old, the truth is that this is the last semester of high school for us…forever. We will never get this time of our lives back. It may be winter, it may be cold, and we may be ready to be done, yet everyday is another chance to spend time with our friends, learn from our teachers, and make our mark on this school that we will soon leave behind. If you think about the beginning of senior year, you’ll realize that time really does fly by. Soon, it will be Spring. Soon, we will have our last Prom. Soon, we will be turning the tassels on our caps. Soon, we will be Exeter Alumni.

But we aren’t there yet. First, let's be high schoolers, and let’s be high schoolers for as long as it takes so that we can appreciate every part of what it means to be a Senior. Let’s work hard, finish our last classes on a high note, and let’s support each other as we transition into the very best versions of our high-school selves. Class of 2022, we got this.

Exeter's Favorite Holiday Traditions

With winter break quickly approaching, many of us are looking forward to the exciting holidays that are coming. Whether it be the time off from work and school, reuniting with family members, or giving and receiving gifts, many of us make fun memories during this wonderful time of year.

When students here at Exeter high school were asked what their favorite traditions were, a plethora of unique answers were given, which really demonstrates just how valuable the time off during the holidays is to students. Senior Haley Speicher described her favorite family tradition of “decorating cookies with [her] mom and sister for Christmas,” while Saishree Mupparaju loves “watching Christmas movies with her family because [her] brother is home from college.”

Christmas movies were a common answer among interviewees, and senior Claire Scholl also said “I love watching Home Alone and Elf with my family.” Baking is another common tradition that tends to be a favorite, which senior Kirstin Michael also described to be one of her favorite holiday traditions to do with her family.

Senior Zach Badinger was also asked about his family tradition. He said “I like to go Christmas caroling with the fam. It’s good family bonding time. We just go around to neighborhoods, like Jarret [Patton’s], knock on the door, and start signing. It really brings holiday cheer.” His table proceeded to sing Jingle Bells with his table during AP Statistics, proving that they really can sing.

Whether it be watching movies, baking Christmas cookies, or singing Christmas carols, there is one thing that all favorite traditions among students include: family. This time of year is extremely special because of the invaluable time that we all get to spend with our loved ones, so make sure to cherish every moment spent with your family this holiday season!

Plant-Based for the Holidays

Editor - ANYA WHITMAN - 11/24/21

Being plant-based comes with many benefits. People who are vegan or vegetarian and avoid animal products not only support their health, but they contribute to a more sustainable planet by helping reduce the amount of carbon emissions that come with animal agriculture.

Living a plant based lifestyle is not always easy, especially over the holidays. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other seasonal holidays are often centered around one main thing: food. Most of the food we consume over the holidays contains either meat or animal by-products. Not to mention, these foods are part of America’s deeply-rooted holiday traditions. That’s why for a vegan or vegetarian, the holiday dinner table isn’t always a friendly place.

However, many food production companies have adapted to the growing demand for plant-based products. Because of this, the holidays can be a fun time to experiment with meat-free, dairy-free, and egg-free alternatives. Common items like Tofurky, Beyond meat, Gardein, and more have been becoming more and more popular. Also, those pursuing a plant-based diet can easily eliminate or opt for a plant-based alternative to some animal products like butter in common meals like green beans or mashed potatoes.

In a culture that makes meat such a fundamental component of the holidays, it can be tough to stick to veganism or vegetarianism. However, maintaining a plant-based diet throughout the year is a great way to work towards a greener planet with less animal cruelty, not to mention a way to experience all the pros the plant-based world has to offer! If you are interested in trying out a plant-based diet, tons of helpful information can be found online to help you get started. Who knows? You might like it more than you would expect!

Getting to Know Robert Essick: A Veteran

Staff Writer - HAYDEN ADAMS - 11/24/21

In honor of the recent Veterans’ day, Talon staff writer Hayden Adams interviews local veteran Richard Essick.

Richard Essick was born near Pottstown, PA in 1925, the youngest of eight children. He went to school at Owen J. Roberts until he was seventeen and quit to join the Naval Construction Battalion also known as the Seabees. Richard was placed in Seabees Battalion Fifty-Eight.

During his childhood he never strayed far from his Pottstown home, but eventually he joined the Navy and embarked on a three year journey that would change his life. He went to Norfolk Virginia for boot camp, to Camp Peary in California, then on to the south Pacific where they landed in Fiji. From there they went to Guadalcanal which was known as “The Isle of Death”. In Guadalcanal the Battalion was there to help the Marines. After that Mr. Essick and the seven other men who composed the Battalion’s ‘Survey Gang’ went on to the island of Vella Lavella. They arrived in the dark of night in a rubber boat to see if it was safe enough to invade. When they decided it was clear the battalion came and built an airfield; it took only ten days. But then “All the devil broke loose as the Japanese came and bombed [them] [as they] had to run for cover and drive them off with anti aircraft fire.” They were given the Navy Commendation for Heroism for building the airfield and other installations so quickly after chasing the Japanese soldiers off the island.

The battalion was sent to New Zealand for rest and recuperation. On the way they stopped back at Guadalcanal and Richard Essick met his oldest brother Ralph Essick, for the first time in his life.

In mid 1944 they went to Russell island and trained for their next invasion on the Admiral Isles. They built oil tanks to fuel the fleet, all the while they were under fire from the Japanese. After a few months they headed back to Guadalcanal to train with the 6th marine division for the next invasion which was to be in Okinawa on April first, Easter, 1945. They built an airfield there too but “Took heavy casualties [and wiped] out the” enemy. By then the 58th battalion was in very rough shape, most of the surviving men had had malaria and were very weak. “That’s why Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb”. He met his brother for the second time on that island as they prepared to invade Japan, but the Japanese surrendered on August 15, 1945. The 58th battalion was relieved they had undertaken three invasions; it was time to go home. Mr. Essicks left Okinawa on November 30, 1945.

His ship arrived in California and he stepped onto American soil for the first time since 1942. He traveled by train with a friend who lived in Philadelphia. They went to his friend's house first and his friend’s parents were overjoyed to see their son. Then the friend's father turned to Mr. Essick and said “I guess you want to get home.” He took the train to Pottstown station where he was met by his brother who drove him home. When they got there his sisters came running out to greet him, hugging him, and crying. His mother was behind them, the sisters said “Here is Richard!” His mother hugged him and said, “You are not my little boy anymore.”

“There were a lot of tears that day, all my brothers came back alive and ok. Then we had an amazing Christmas, as a family again” said Essick.

In 2001 Mr. Essick got his high school diploma from Owen J. Roberts, sixty years later. He now loves to spend his time painting and playing the harmonica, teaching himself a variety of songs from Abbey Road to Amazing Grace.

Bored this Break? Pick up a Book!

Staff Writer - MADISON MONROE - 11/24/21

During holiday break many students become bored after a few days of not having school. But there are many ways that students can entertain themselves, one of which is to read stories that interest them and fit their personal standards. Every student has their own unique interests, but a lot of times they can not be bothered to attempt and look for a story. It is encouraged that students go down to the library during lunch, or their study hall to pick a book of their choice to keep themselves entertained during the break.

There is a wide selection of books in the school library that anyone can choose from. The genres can range from fiction to graphic novels, to non-fiction, and more. Stories can be very fun to read and interesting. After interviewing Ms. Gajewski, I asked her about her recommendations for different story genres such as historical fiction, science fiction, and memoirs. She absolutely loved historical fiction stories by Ruta Sepetys. For science fiction, she loved the stories Take Me With You, Pills and Starships, and the Hitchhiker series. Ms. G’s favorite memoirs are The Cat I Never Named, The Dead Inside, and We Should Hang Out Sometime.

If a student is not interested in visiting the library in the school, they can purchase any kind of book they’d be interested in online. A great website to use for book searching is Goodreads, they have options to choose from Biographies to Young Adult fiction stories. Any genre that is preferred, they will have it. Overall, there is no reason to be bored this holiday break when so many great selections await you in the library or online! Happy reading!

Manage Your Time Management

Editor - ANYA WHITMAN - 10/31/21

Let’s face it: the average person leads a busy and oftentimes overwhelming life. In high school, a typical student has multiple homework assignments to complete, club meetings to attend, sports practices to go to, and family-responsibilities to take care of on a daily basis. And get this: it all has to be done after going to school for 7 hours! Hence, it’s normal to feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day.

This is where a lovely term called time management presents itself. With a few lifestyle changes and a little shift in mindset, a workload that seems overwhelming can actually become manageable and easy.

The first step to becoming a pro at time-management is asking yourself some questions, those of which must be answered honestly. The first question is: do you procrastinate? If you answered yes, then you must start changing your habits if you want better time management skills. Instead of waiting until the last minute to start your projects and homework (no, you don’t perform better under pressure), try starting your tasks earlier and working on them one chunk at a time. Not only does this make the workload more manageable, but it will reduce the stress of getting everything done by your deadline.

The second question is: Do you spend too much time on your phone? If you aren’t sure, check out your screen times in your phone's settings. If you are spending multiple hours on social media apps, then you are losing a lot of time that can be used towards productivity. Try setting time limits on social media and keeping your phone out of sight when you are working to eliminate distractions. Without the incessant buzzing of text messages, you just might get your hours of homework done in only one.

Another helpful tip towards becoming a pro at time-management is staying organized. Try keeping a planner where you write down your daily to-dos, crossing them off as you get them done. Keep your binders neat and your desk space de-cluttered. You might start to see that a clean space equates to a clear mind.

Lastly, learning how to manage your time requires a certain mindset. Adopt this phrase: “If I don’t want to do it now, I won’t want to do it later either.” When you realize that by being productive you are helping your future-self out, you will be much more motivated to get things done in the moment instead of pushing them off. With a little practice and some simple mindset adjustments, you will be well on your way to becoming a pro at time management.

This Year's Fall Fashion Trends Influenced by Haute Couture

Staff Writer - MIRANDA DOBRON - 10/31/21

How do fashion trends form each season? Haute Couture or finest dressmaking, is the cause of designs becoming popular. Trends form on the runway, get worn by a fashion icon, and finally become a street style.

Fall/Winter fashion week 2021 occurred in the Spring of this year. High fashion houses like Versace, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton showed their new collections by hosting shows to potential buyers. An occurring style found on the runway were pops of color as well as muted colors to balance out. Versace showcased a series of monochromatic designs including empire dresses and different style suits. The fashion house, Chanel, focused on matching sets and tweed blazers. A classic style within the fashion industry. Louis Vuitton showed layering and included how garments can fit together even when they aren’t a normal everyday look. These three designer brands have something in common. They all form trends. Celebrities like Bella Hadid, Zendaya, and Harry Styles are seen wearing designer clothing and this causes crazes in the fashion world.

The garments shown on the runway are what become the fashionable styles in social media. 2021’s fall trends have been shaped by this year's fashion week. On the streets of New York, or in the mall, you will see new crazes that have a similar look to the ones on the runway. A variety of blazers including leather and tweed are popular statement pieces. As well as monochromatic outfits and the “preppy” aesthetic. Plaid mini skirts, cropped sweaters, suits, knitwear, and relaxed trousers are also the way to go. However, a simple matching sweat set is a perfect fall look. Neutrals are a classic staple and will continue to stay in trend. The basic straight jean and neutral top with a statement jacket is the top trend this season.

Most trends this season are classic garments that will never go out of style. Thanks to Haute Couture, new ideas and trends are coming into the fashion industry and are allowing consumers to experiment with their own personal style.

The Meaning Behind Our Dreams

Staff Writer - RACHELLE TOALDO - 10/31/21

Are You Dreaming?

Have you ever spent a morning dwelling on something that occurred in your dream from the previous night that you just can’t shake? Or have you ever been so close to remembering a really interesting part of your dream that you  just need to elaborate more on? It turns out that everyone has dreams every night and some of the plots that have kept you lying awake thinking may have an entirely different meaning than what you thought before.

The Facts

Although some people may think that they don’t dream, or dream rarely, this is actually not the case at all. It has been found in multiple studies that most people dream between 3-6 times each night, but about 95% of those dreams are forgotten when you wake up. Most dreams occur during the REM(rapid eye movement) stage of sleep which is when your mind is most active. It has also been found that the majority of dreams only last between 15-20 minutes, which means that most of the night no dreams occur.

Why do we Dream?

There are many different theories about why we dream, but the most commonly accepted one is that dreams are the result of our subconscious mind trying to make sense of emotions and thoughts that we had during the day(Burnett). This can be as simple as being nervous for a test then failing it in your dream to seeing something during the day that subconsciously reminds you of a person or place in your life who then ends up in the plot of your dream. Dreams also are commonly associated with symbolic languages which vary from person to person but usually follow some certain themes. “Dreams usually represent what we are feeling in the present or what we want in the future. They also represent our hidden desires and our deepest fears” (Burnett).

The Meaning Behind our Dreams

There are many common dreams that most people can recall having. The exact meaning varies from person to person but there are some generalized theories behind some of these.

#1-Falling

‘"Dreaming of falling is very common. It is a symbol of fear in real life - perhaps of failing at work or in your love life," claims Russell Grant, author of The Illustrated Dream Dictionary. "Falling often expresses a need to let yourself go more and enjoy life more" (Cherry).

#2-Public Nudity

Most people have had the awkward dream of showing up somewhere in their birthday suit for no known reason. These dreams are typically common and are thought to indicate that you feel like a phony or are afraid of revealing your imperfections to others.

#3- Being Chased

“Tony Crisp, author of Dream Dictionary, suggests that being chased in a dream might indicate a desire to escape from your own fears or desires” (Cherry). It may also be important to identify who you are being chased by in order to more fully understand your dream. Being chased by an animal represents that you are hiding from your own anger, passion, or feelings. Being chased by a mysterious unknown figure indicates past or childhood trauma. Finally, being chased by the opposite sex may mean that you are afraid of love or are haunted by a past relationship (Cherry).

#4- Losing Teeth

Most of us can recall an odd dream where we lost maybe even a few teeth at the same time and it’s not usually a settling experience. “Penny Peirce, author of Dream Dictionary for Dummies, suggests that dreaming about losing teeth can have multiple meanings. It might mean that you are worried about your attractiveness or appearance. It might also indicate that you are concerned about your ability to communicate or concerned that you might have said something embarrassing” (Cherry). The purpose of teeth is to be able to bite, grind, or tear, so once they are lost you lose an aspect of your personal power.

#5- Taking a Test

The meaning behind taking and/or failing a test in your dreams is simply feeling/being unprepared for the challenges in your waking life.

#6- Infidelity

The dream of your partner cheating on you is a sign that there are communication or trust issues in the relationship.

#7- Flying

Have you ever dreamed of flying high above anyone else? “On the one hand, such dreams can represent feelings of freedom and independence. On the other hand, they can also indicate a desire to flee or escape from the realities of life”    (Cherry).

#8- Pregnancy

Pregnancy in dreams has been interpreted to represent emotions from love to fear. “David C. Lohff, the author of Dream Dictionary, believes that pregnancy dreams might sometimes represent a woman's fears of being an inadequate mother. Author Tony Crisp, on the other hand, suggests that such dreams indicate that the dreamer is developing some area of potential or deepening a relationship” (Cherry). It has also been associated with going through rough times.

#9- Being Lost in a House

Have you ever dreamt that you were lost in a house? Was it your house or was it somewhere unfamiliar altogether? Discovering a new room in a familiar place means something new is coming up in your life but being lost means you can't find a clear direction to go in life.

#10- Your House is Broken into

The intruder represents an element that has intruded on your peace of mind.

Weird Facts About Dreams

There are a few odd things that we cannot do in our dreams that you may have never noticed before.

Here are a few random facts that may surprise you:

All in all, dreaming remains a mysterious part of all of our daily lives. When you try to connect the dots some very interesting things about yourself can be discovered.

All You Need to Know About Exeter's Annual Fall Fest

At Daniel Boone Homestead on Saturday, October 9th, Exeter held its annual fall festival. There were many activities for people of all ages to enjoy. This was Exeter’s annual festival of fun, food, and entertainment.

As you drove in, you saw the hayride for all people to enjoy. After you parked and got on, you took a short ride around the park while being towed by a traditional tractor. This was an enjoyable ride for all. After you get off the hayride, you could take a short walk over to the kids area. Here, volunteers helped kids paint pumpkins and play some games. There was also a fun barrel ride for the younger ones. Walk over a little further, and the fire trucks were out with firefighters there to explain the different tools and parts of the truck. Next, there were food trucks with lots of choices to choose from. There was lemonade, beer, burgers, fries, cheesesteaks, ice cream, shaved ice and more! Nearby, there were picnic tables and chairs to eat and enjoy the live music being played on the nearby stage. There were also many tents set up by people and groups promoting, selling, and fundraising. At the end of the line of tents, Cub Scout pack 319 was helping children make a small ghost craft to take home. Next to this, Boy Scout troop 319 was running the joust and the axe throwing activity. Don’t worry though, not real axes, foam ones with velcro to help it stick. Old and young jousted each other for the win.

Overall, this was a great event for people of all ages to enjoy the fall weather at this fun outdoor festival.

New Fall Movies!

Many new movies came out this past month and here are three for the spotlight. With October comes Halloween and with Halloween comes the release of some scary movies. This month Halloween Kills came out on October 15, 2021. Nicholas Vishio, a junior, gives the movie a 7 out of 10 rating. His review is as follows:

“As a sequel to the 2018 Halloween I thought it was solid and good, but it is not perfect. I liked the presentation and effects done for the film, but it lacked the suspense that was a staple theme for the 1978 Carpenter Original. Micheal was definitely more brutal than his previous outings. It was nice to see the return of the original characters outside of Laurie from the first movie, like Tommy Doyal, Lee Brackett, and Marion Chambers.  I would rate this movie 7/10 a good watch, definitely recommend it if you are interested in the Halloween Franchise.”

Along with Halloween Kills the sequel to Venom, Venom: Let there be Carnage, was finally released on October 1, 2021. Noah Gates, a sophomore, gives his review of the movie:

“It was pretty good. Pretty drawn out and boring until the action begins. The action felt well paced though, but it felt more like a cameo for carnage. There were some really good jokes as to be expected from the last one. Overall I enjoyed it. They developed the story well and the ending was pretty intriguing. Definitely recommend.”

Lastly, the series of Daniel Craig Bond films has come to an end with the latest movie No Time to Die. Jeremy Weaver, a senior, saw the movie and gave his opinion.

No Time To Die is an action packed adventure that will continually leave audiences on the edge of their seats. It is also the perfect sendoff to Daniel Craig's James Bond, whom fans of the series have known and loved since his debut in the 2006 film Casino Royale.

October is ending and November is approaching and you know what that means… more new movies! A new addition to the MCU, Marvel Cinematic Universe, is coming on November 3. Marvel’s Eternals is a movie about superhuman immortals reuniting to battle evil Deviants.

On November 11 there will be two new intriguing movies released as well. First of the two is Ghostbusters: Afterlife. This movie is a prequel to the existing Ghostbusters movies that follows two children and their mother as they move to a new town and discover their grandfather’s legacy.

The second of the two movies to be released on November 11th is a movie adaptation of a musical written by Steven Levenson. This adaptation is coming to Netflix and will be directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Tick, Tick...Boom! is a musical that follows a young theatre composer before his 30th birthday as he navigates life in New York City.

That’s all the movies to report for now, happy watching everyone!

What is Manifestation?

Clubs Editor - ANYA WHITMAN - 2/9/2021

Manifestation has recently become a popular topic, especially as we begin the new year and people are looking to receive a range of new things in their lives. A broad definition of manifestation is attracting something that you want in your life based on your thoughts and energy. It is said that with positive thinking and proactive actions, manifestation of absolutely anything you desire is possible. For some, this could be love, money, a job, or a new friend. But manifesting can be literally anything you want, you just have to make sure you are doing it the right way.

To manifest something, it is said that you need to have a clear, definitive idea of what you want to make a reality. Be as detailed as possible when you think about what you want to attract into your life. The next step is to ask the universe or higher power for this thing that you want. You can ask by writing it down, meditating, visualizing it, or making a vision board. You need to believe that you will get what you want, because doubt is one of the reasons that manifestation fails.

Manifestation can also fail if someone does not take proactive steps towards their dreams, or ignores the signs that the universe is giving them. In other words, how are you going to meet the love of your life if you’ve spent the last three days on your couch? That is why you need to proactively engage in your life and be aware of what the universe is showing you through your daily experiences.

So what do you think? Is manifestation the real deal, or just another attention-grabber that doesn’t actually do a thing? Either way, positive thinking and taking action to achieve your goals are a great way to start off 2021. Your mindset really does make a difference, so believe you can and you are halfway there...and maybe give manifestation a shot?

The Outbreak will not stop the Oscars

Staff Writer - JILLIAN GAPPA  - 2/8/2021

One of Hollywood’s most significant award shows is surprisingly on track to get back to normal in 2021. The Covid-19 pandemic continues to cancel events as cases rise. There is no doubt that many people all over the world are absolutely devastated by this outcome. However, it seems as though Hollywood is trying to revert back to normal.

On April 25th, the Academy Awards will be hosting a live show on ABC. The Awards were supposed to be held on February 28th, 2021, but the ceremony was postponed due to the intensity of the pandemic. Despite there being a live show where people can watch from the comfort of their homes, there will also be a live audience. According to Ryan Gajewski of Eonline.com, a source with ties to the Academy and ABC told Variety that the vaunted film-awards ceremony will not be a virtual experience, despite the ongoing pandemic. “The Oscars in-person telecast will happen," the insider shared. It’s now confirmed that the Oscars will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, which seats 3,400 people.

Photos Courtesy of Creative Commons

This decision will definitely come as a shock to many. Los Angeles currently has over 1 million cases of Covid-19 and California alone has over 3 million. There will most likely be extreme precautions when people arrive at the live show, but it is nevertheless a risk to take. If Covid-19 cases rise significantly between now and April, it is likely that the live show will be cancelled.

For now, the 93rd annual Academy Awards will happen. Nonetheless, it is entirely possible that the show could be postponed again if the outbreak continues to get detrimental.

Tis the Season to Manage Your Stress

Senior Editor - CLAIRE SAMOLEWICZ - 12/21/2020

I think it is safe to say that the holiday season is a stressful time for everyone. While holiday festivities are meant to spark feelings of love and cheer, it can be difficult to stay positive when nothing has gone quite according to plan this year. The holidays often present a dizzying array of demands such as cooking meals, shopping for gifts, baking, cleaning, and entertaining guests. You may also feel stressed, depressed, or anxious because your holiday plans may look different during the Covid-19 pandemic. With some practical tips, you can minimize the stress that accompanies the holidays, and you may even end up enjoying the holidays more than you ever thought you would!

When stress is at its peak, first acknowledge your feelings. If someone close to you has recently passed away or you can't be with loved ones this year due to the pandemic, realize that it is completely normal to have emotions of sadness and grief. It is perfectly alright to take time to cry or express your feelings. You should never force yourself to be happy just because it is the holiday season. If you are feeling lonely or isolated, seek out support. It may help to talk to a friend or family member about your concerns. Try reaching out with a text, call or video chat. Volunteering your time or doing something to help a friend or neighbor is also a great way to lift your spirits and those around you. For example, consider dropping off a meal and dessert at a friend's home during the holidays. Simple acts of kindness are the true embodiment of holiday spirit.

Another tip to manage stress during the holidays is to be realistic with your expectations. The holidays don't have to be perfect just like the previous year. As families grow, traditions often change as well. Choose a few to continue, and be open to creating new ones. If your relatives can't visit this year, find new ways to celebrate together, such as sharing pictures, emails, or videos. You can even meet virtually on a video call. Even though your holiday plans may look different this year, you can find ways to celebrate.

Another source of holiday stress can be seeing too much of your family. During the holidays, set aside any grievances until a more appropriate time for discussion. Be understanding if others get upset or distressed when a controversial subject is the topic of conversation, chances are that they are also feeling the effects of holiday stress.

The Pandemic has also been a financially difficult time for many families. Before doing any food or gift shopping, decide how much money you can afford to spend. If you happen to spend a little more than you originally wanted to, don’t beat yourself up over it. Be honest with your friends and family members if you can’t afford to buy them an extravagant amount of presents this year. Instead of attempting to buy happiness, try donating to a charity, give homemade gifts, or write an endearing letter.

Setting aside specific days for shopping, baking, and connecting with friends can also help prevent holiday stress. Consider whether you can shop online for any of your items. Making a shopping list can help prevent any last-minute scrambling to buy forgotten ingredients and gifts. Don’t be afraid to say no to plans with friends or family. Agreeing to something when your heart isn’t truly invested can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed. Friends will understand if you can't participate in every project or activity.

Finally, the best way to feel mentally well is to continue healthy habits. The holiday season is full of sweets and baked goods, however overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt. Make sure to continue eating healthy meals, get plenty of sleep, exercise daily, and cut back the time you spend reading news and social media.

Doing the things you love is the most important part of the holiday season, so take advantage of your well-earned time to relax. 2020 was a difficult year for all of us, so here’s to a hopefully better 2021!

Will Covid-19 Kill Black Friday?

Senior Editor - CLAIRE SAMOLEWICZ - 11/8/2020

With coronavirus cases spiking once again in the United States, local businesses and national retailers can’t risk attracting large crowds of people that normally participate in the Thanksgiving tradition of Black Friday shopping. The Centers for Disease Control and Protection recently added shopping at crowded stores before, on, or after Thanksgiving to it’s list of high risk activities, preventing people from camping overnight and waiting in lines for hours outside of stores. However, Black Friday being banned across the country doesn’t mean that you’ll miss out on any discounts. In fact, Black Friday deals have been promoted at most stores before Halloween. So, if you’re just starting your holiday shopping now, you may already be late to the game.

National and local retailers have adopted alternative strategies to promote holiday shopping during the pandemic to keep both employees and customers safe. This year, businesses are emphasizing their online shopping options more than ever, including curbside pickup and delivery. Retailers have also been advertising the extension of Black Friday sales from October to late November. This means that popular items may be sold out earlier than past years, so if you already have your holiday shopping list, my advice is to get started as soon as possible.

Although small businesses are harmed every year by Black Friday deals at large chain corporations, this year is especially difficult for them in light of the pandemic. According to the Washington Post, over 100,000 small businesses have closed forever due to lockdown restrictions, and many are still trying to break even from debt acquired during quarantine. Supporting small businesses this holiday season is more important than ever. Small Business Saturday this year is November 28, and I urge everyone to search for gifts at local retailers first before buying from large corporations.

Everyone is struggling in different ways due to the pandemic, so why not use the holiday spirit to support small businesses, donate to charity organizations, and buy a loved one a gift to help brighten their 2020.

How Students Celebrate Fall

Staff Writer - JADA (JAY) SMITH - 11/8/2020

The fall and Halloween are a special time of year for many people. I set out to find how students here at Exeter spend their time during these autumn months.

I asked the following people these questions. How do you think Halloween will be now because of Covid? What did you do in the past? What are your plans for this year?

Blake Smith, junior: “Normally we have people over and do a bonfire in our backyard.  My family will probably still have people over like normal but, it’ll probably be a lot less.”

Molly Brant, senior: “For Halloween I usually go trick or treating with some of my close friends. Fall is my favorite season. I love seeing the leaves change color and going to pumpkin patches. Also my birthday is in October so that makes it pretty good. I hope Halloween is semi normal this year. As long as people wear masks I think it will be ok, but I definitely want to go trick or treating. I usually don’t trick or treat in my neighborhood because it’s so small but I think people will still hand out candy in other neighborhoods.”

Kylee Dwinal, senior: “I would usually go trick or treating with friends, but now that I am a bit older I hand out candy. My neighborhood will be handing out candy, but I doubt it’ll be 100% of the families. In order to still have kids get candy from our house we are making a “candy shoot” which I will slide candy into and it will end up in the kids bags.”

Serenity Zawilla, junior: “What I like about October is the spooky feeling. I don’t think there will be many trick-or-treaters because of covid. My neighborhood always goes nuts around Halloween time.”

Camryn Cataldi, junior: “On Halloween I usually get together with a group of friends and go trick or treating (which we might be getting too old for but who cares!) or we go to a Halloween party. I love October because the weather gets cooler and I can wear jeans or leggings and sweaters or hoodies. I also love the scents of the season and pumpkin or apple flavored everything!  There are so many things to do in October such as corn mazes and scary attractions. There are also football games, homecoming, and so many other exciting things involving the school. Halloween will definitely be different this year due to COVID - 19 and I wonder whether trick or treating will still take place. I doubt there is going to be a Safe Halloween Night at the school; the pandemic is going to take a lot of fun out of this season. This year for Halloween I’m planning on just hanging out with a few friends. I may go to Field of Screams or Shocktoberfest as well. I feel like some people in my neighborhood may still give out candy, but there definitely won’t be as many trick-or-treaters as many people have changes that we are all going to have to adapt to. Hopefully we find a vaccine soon and stop the spread. I hope that everyone has a safe Halloween, and if you are going out don’t forget your mask!”

Molly Nemirow, senior: “October has a great aesthetic. I think Halloween is going to be a bigger deal than usual, since it will be livening people up, even if we have to do it from a distance. It gives us something to look forward to! I work on Halloween, but I’ll probably dress up at some other time to take photos. I think people will only be distributing prepacked candy. Maybe the distribution itself would occur on the driveway, that way people could have more room to be socially distanced.”

Nancy Rose Dotterrer, junior: “It’s gonna be different, I don’t think there will be trick or treating, but I still think it will be fun. I don’t think my neighborhood will be giving out candy. If they do it won’t be as much as normal.”

Garrett  Camelleri, senior: “I don’t do much of anything anymore, but when I was younger I would always go trick or treating. What I like in October is all the festivals.  I’ll probably just stay home and relax during Halloween.”

Ben Magovern, senior: “When I was younger I used to go trick or treating with all my friends, but now I usually take my little brother trick or treating because he is only four. I think Halloween will  definitely be different this year but I hope and believe that kids will still get to trick or treat. My only Halloween plans as of now are going trick or treating with my little brother  and maybe hanging out with some friends later that night. I think my neighborhood will be giving out candy like normal. I think people will just leave candy out in a bucket and then the kids will be able to go up and take the candy and go house to house. I think Halloween will definitely be different this year but I do not think there is any reason for it to be cancelled. I think there is definitely a way that it can be done in a safe and fun way for the kids.”

Saishree Mupparaju, junior: “I used to go trick or treating until the last two years. I like to stay at home and give candy to the kids! I doubt haunted houses and hayrides will happen. Decorations will still probably be up, but trick or treating might be different. I don’t have any Halloween plans, but maybe we’ll dress our dog up!”

Shaun Michalski, senior: “I am still going to a little party at my friend’s house, but other than that I don’t have any plans. I heard they already canceled it, so I don’t think people will be giving out candy. My family will just buy some so we can celebrate it.”

Carolina Wegman, junior: “On Halloween, I like to go out and Trick or Treat. Even though I’m getting kind of old for it, I love dressing up and getting candy. I love how creative some people are with their costumes, and I love seeing them. I like the Halloween decorations that people put up. I think that Halloween is going to be kind of different this year. I’m sure that there are plenty of people who don’t fear Covid and are willing to do Halloween like normal, but most people will probably put candy outside of their house so that kids can enjoy trick or treating without the fear of getting sick. I might not Trick or Treat myself, but I would probably dress up and take my little sister. Covid can’t stop kids from having fun. Their fun might be different from years past, but they’ll have fun all the same. In the past, I went out and had fun, and I don’t really plan on changing that.”

Sydney Bolonski, junior: “Usually I  just stay home and give out candy. I think there will be a size limit on groups. I think there will be a limit on the people in each group. I know it’s a bummer that some kids would have to miss trick or treating this year, but safety comes first.” Photo was taken by Sydney Bolonski.

Anya Witman, junior: “This year I’m going to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters if that’s allowed. It’s also my birthday month so that’s something I look forward to in October too. Halloween might be a little different this year, but I think kids could still go around, but maybe people would leave candy on their porch so they could social distance.”

Haley Himmelreich, junior: “I also love the activities to do around this time. I enjoy going to corn mazes, hayrides, and scary attractions. I believe some houses will be giving out candy like normal, but there will definitely be less participation.”

Gianna Crupi, freshman: “ I love going to pumpkin patches and haunted houses. I have planned to go trick or treating with my dad and siblings as long as we have Halloween. I think the person giving out the candy will be putting it in your bag and won’t be reaching your hand in the bowl.

Alex Holbrook, junior: “I usually just hangout with my friends and chill at their house. I love the weather and doing fall activities like corn mazes and haunted houses. I think it’s going to be very different, I doubt many people will be going door to door. I have districts for cross country on that day. So I'll run the most likely hangout with some friends. I think people will but the majority probably won’t trick or treat.

Bailey Paulino-Rivera, sophomore: “Normally I go to my uncle’s Halloween party because it’s a combo of also my cousins’ birthdays. I like that in October it’s cooler and the feeling of fall is like a dream, especially going to pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and apple orchards. I think Halloween is going to be chaotic this year because we really shouldn’t be going trick or treating but I know people will and teenagers still throw their parties without a single care or take any precautions. I do not have any Halloween plans simply for the fact that my mom is very strict and also it’s just not the year to be doing anything right now. I do believe my neighborhood will be handing out candy like normal.

At this time in our world, it can be so easy to find ourselves being consumed by fear and worry stemming from the insecurity of this global pandemic. The pandemic has brought a variety of changes into our lives such as virtual school, new safety procedures, and political unrest. We let this doubt and uncertainty creep into, and, in some cases, greatly affect our day to day lives. For the reasons described, our mental health is of extreme importance at this time. We need to make sure we are taking care of our own mental health, along with being sensitive to the needs of others. Here are some ways in which we can do so:

I know this is a difficult time for many of us, but by keeping these things in mind, we can improve our perspective and keep our mental health in check.

Socially Distant Fall Activities

Staff Writer - HANSIKA KUNDURU - 10/12/20

During this pandemic, many people are bored and longing for activities to participate in. However, many regular activities cannot be pursued due to COVID-19 restrictions. So, you may be wondering, then what can I do? Well, you are in luck, because the Coronavirus cannot cancel every activity held during the fall season; your usual events can instead be modified to be held safely.

With online-distance learning, chances are you are not that busy compared to regular, in-person school, so why not take advantage of this extra time and pick up a small activity? It doesn’t have to be big, and it doesn’t have to require many people. There are many options to choose from, both indoor and outdoor. It can range from learning how to bake to family pumpkin carving.

It’s fall, so you are probably yearning for your house to smell and look like autumn. Instead of buying exquisite candles and decorations, why not bake a few treats and decorate with items you already have? Go to a local pumpkin patch, or any store that sells pumpkins, and purchase a couple. Have a family pumpkin carving session and maybe even invite a few close friends, obviously while socially distancing and taking precautions. You can place the carved pumpkin on your porch, patio, or wherever desired. Instead of throwing all the goo and seeds away, try making pumpkin puree or even roast some pumpkin seeds to make a delicious and healthy snack. You can also find an easy recipe that shows you how to make pumpkin pie, and who doesn’t like that? You’ll kill two birds with one stone: feeding your family the delicious dessert, and making your house smell like fall.

You are probably looking for ways to get outside, after spending so long quarantining in your house over the summer. What better way than to exercise? You are probably tired from staring at your Zoom screen the whole day, so why not take a long breath of oxygen outside. Put on that exercise apparel and go for a run, jog, or walk by yourself, with a friend, or a family member. Spend time with your family and friends while going hiking. It is a perfect time because the leaves are changing colors, and you can hear the rattling when you are stepping in the woods. Biking in the woods is a great way to get your blood flowing! Try out some recreational tennis or golf. Any other socially-distanced sport works just as well. Since you can’t eat out everywhere, try cooking up some delicious food and go out to a picnic. Go outside and enjoy the cool weather while it lasts!

You can basically do any activity as long as it is safe and follows the necessary Coronavirus precautions. Just because COVID-19 has hit, that doesn’t mean it should prevent you from doing things you love. Fall will only last so long, so go do some fun fall activities while you can!

Facing the Facts of Face Masks

Senior Editor - CLAIRE SAMOLEWICZ - 10/12/20

With the United States recently reaching over 7 million Coronavirus cases and 200,000 deaths, wearing face masks has become crucial to help stop the spread of the virus. As the pandemic spread, demand for medical-grade face masks increased, and supply consequently decreased. Practically every mainstream fashion service is advertising various styles of reusable cloth face masks, but you shouldn’t just buy any mask you find in a store. There have been countless debates in the medical community over which non-medical masks provide the best protection against bacteria transmission.

First, let’s establish which face mask alternatives should never be worn as an effective barrier against bacteria and the medical explanation behind it. Mask alternatives such as neck fleeces, gaiters, scarves, and bandanas provide little to no protection from contracting the virus as they are made of thin fabrics and do not cover the entire mouth and nose region. The most ideal type of material for face masks are fabrics that consist of 100% cotton and consist of at least two to three layers of protection.

If you are unsure of what type of material your mask is made of or want to test the effectiveness of your mask, scientists recommend performing a light test. Through studying the behavior of masks under light, scientists have also confirmed that, contrary to popular belief, the virus can be spread by talking, not only through coughing or sneezing, as small droplets are expelled when speaking. During the light test, if you cannot see through the mask under a light, then the mask should be more effective at containing germs. Materials that are thin or contain small holes, such as knitted fabrics, scarves, and mesh, do not provide protection and can actually make droplets easier to transmit to others than if you weren’t wearing a mask at all.

Now that you know what not to wear, you have an array of face masks styles that you can choose from. The most popular face masks to wear contain two to three layers of protection and are made out of 100% cotton. These masks can easily be hand sewn at home with fabric squares and elastic from any craft store for optimal style and comfort customization. If you would rather buy a mask than make it from scratch, online retailers such as BaubleBar and Kitsch sell stylish comfortable masks in sets of two to three for under twelve dollars total.

If you find masks made out of thick material uncomfortable or hard to breathe in, there are plenty of other options available. For physical activity and labored breathing, masks made out of synthetic polyester materials are ideal. Polyester doesn’t completely pass the light test, but it doesn’t fail either. You can find masks dedicated to sports from companies such as Under Armour and Nike, or you can sew one out of an old workout shirt using the same method as sewing a cotton mask.

With the possibility of Exeter starting in-person learning again, clear face shields are a great option for audibility. For example, face shields are beneficial for language classes so students can visually learn how to speak a language that is unfamiliar to them. Face shields are also crucial for elementary education so young children can learn to read better and also learn social skills more effectively by viewing facial expressions.

In the absence of a vaccine or antiviral medicine, wearing a face mask is one of the proven ways to protect others as well as yourself. If everyone wore a mask, up to 99% of droplets could be stopped before they reach someone else. So, next time you encounter someone who refuses to wear a face mask, tell them that it’s not political, it’s just science.

The Joy-Con Drift Solved!

Staff Writer - RYU MORGAN - 6/2/20

The Problem

Like many people around the world, I have a Nintendo Switch, which I love to play. However, I’ve recently been having problems with my device. If you are having problems too, you are not alone. Almost everyone around the world who owns a Switch has been plagued with a certain problem known as “drifting.” For those who have been fortunate enough to not experience this issue, the problem of “drifting” refers to the movement of the Nintendo controllers, known as Joy-Cons, without touching the Joy-Cons at all. In other words, at times the controller moves by itself. From experience, this can be extremely annoying to deal with when playing video games and at times almost impossible to deal with. In addition, a new Joy-Con can cost up to 70 dollars, which could definitely turn into a waste if the same problem were to occur. Therefore, after some research, I’ve found a simple way to solve the problem at hand!

The Main Solution (How to fix it)

Equipment

Through my research, I’ve found that the most effective way people are fixing the drifting issue is by replacing the problematic analog stick with a new one. Now, this solution requires tools, precision, and a little bit patience but it is extremely effective and cheap. However, the most common way of fixing the drifting issue requires no tools whatsoever. First of all, the equipment you need would have to be gathered, which can be found throughout your household. After gathering all the equipment, just follow these simple steps:

STEPS:

2. After clicking “Calibrate Control Sticks,” you should follow the directions on your device to find how severe the drifting issue is. (Your screen should look like this.)

3. After seeing the severity of the drift and locating which direction the analog stick is drifting towards, you would then need to grab the cotton swab and dose it in alcohol and clean the entirety of the analog stick, especially the part it is drifting towards.

4. Then you would need to press down (with force) on the analog stick for roughly 10 seconds while the stick is coated in alcohol.

5. When 10 seconds is over, wait 5 minutes for the alcohol to dry and repeat the process.

6. After the second time, recalibrate your joycon to see if there was any improvement.

If after all these steps you don't see any change, don't be afraid to be even more forceful (with moderation) or to try these methods again. Good Luck!

The True Significance of Wearing a Mask

Over the past couple of months, the world has struggled with adjusting to Coronavirus. The United States death toll has recently just hit 100,000, and with rising confirmed COVID-19 cases the significance of wearing face masks on public outings has also risen drastically. Since the beginning of the outbreak, people have frantically bought face masks in an attempt to protect themselves from the virus. The importance of face masks has only skyrocketed, thus so did the demand. Wearing a face mask is estimated to cut down 95% of the breathing that spreads the virus up to six feet away and it also is able to prevent oral transmission of the virus by protecting you from contracting the virus through your mouth or nose. However, many doctors have criticized cloth face masks as they do not do much to protect people from contracting the virus.

The Coronavirus is able to travel directly through cloth, but cloth can reduce the amount of respiratory droplets that make it onto surfaces or people surrounding a person wearing a cloth mask. Cloth masks only protect the environment from the person wearing the mask, unlike powerful N95 masks that protect a person from the environment. Regardless, any sort of mask can at least help with limiting the spread of Coronavirus and will lessen your chances of contracting it. Other measures should be taken after public outings such as washing your hands thoroughly and washing cloth masks daily. Remember that you are not only protecting yourself when choosing to wear a mask, but that you are choosing to protect many others who could be at a higher risk of contracting Coronavirus.

How to Make the Most of Quarantine

Staff Writer - ANYA WHITMAN - 6/2/20

Spending tons of time at home can be very hard for lots of people. You might feel trapped, lonely, bored, and frustrated. Sometimes family members might annoy you; you might miss hanging out with your friends and going out to eat. You might be wishing you could go back to the structure of having school or work everyday. However, it is important that we accept the things that we cannot change and try to make the most of our time at home instead. So much extra time at home may be a once in a lifetime opportunity, so it's important that we look on the bright side and get creative!

Has there been something you have been wanting to try for a long time, but felt like you never had the time? Maybe you want to learn how to skateboard, improve your flexibility, start reading more books, or start a Youtube channel. Boredom doesn’t have to be negative, because boredom can cause you to think outside the box of new things to do! Now is such a great time to ask yourself what you are passionate about and start doing it, and  maybe you will learn more about yourself along the way!

Before quarantine, life for many people was fast-paced, exhausting, and mentally-draining. Now is such a great time for self-care and mental health. Maybe you can try meditating, journaling, or listening to podcasts. You can even have a self-care day and allow yourself to simply relax. Light a candle, take a bath, get in comfortable clothes, and watch your favorite TV show or movie. Being in quarantine has caused a lot of worry and anxiety, so try to use it instead to take better care of yourself and your mind.

Taking care of your physical health is also important during this time, and it may be a way to cure your boredom! Maybe try a new form of exercise like yoga, running outside, jump rope, or workout videos on YouTube. Try taking the plunge to becoming your healthiest self. Exercise daily, make healthy meals, and work your mind by reading or solving puzzles. Try to be kinder to everyone, including yourself. Create deeper bonds and happy memories with your family members so that you can look back on quarantine and remember all the joyful times and new things you tried. However you decide to spend your time, always remember that life is what you make of it and there are endless new things to try!

Netflix Recommendations: Movies and Shows

Staff Writer - RYU MORGAN - 5/18/2020

Every month, there’s always a plethora of new movies and T.V shows added to Netflix. Tons of great shows and movies go undiscovered and eventually disappear from Netflix without any recognition whatsoever while other overrated shows receive all the acknowledgment. Now the question is, which shows/movies are actually worth watching this month?

Recommendation for Movies (In no particular order)

Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse -

This movie follows teenager, Miles Morales, as he discovers the awakening of his powers to become the next Spider-man. Along with finding his powers, Miles also discovers many other Spider-men from different universes which help him become a superhero.

The Irishman -

The Irishman takes place during the 1950s and follows the life of truck driver, Frank Sheeran, while he gets involved with a powerful organization tied to crime. This movie follows actual events in history and displays them from an entertaining point of view. This movie is very violent at times, which might not be suitable for some kids, but nonetheless it's filled with memorable characters and big plot twists.

Moonlight -

This story portrays three defining chapters in the life of Chiron, a young child who grows up with his irresponsible mother in the projects of Miami. Chiron’s epic journey is guided by the kindness, support and love of those around him. I definitely recommend this drama packed film for those who care about the journey rather than the end result!

6 Underground -

Six individuals from all around the globe are recruited to become a special team that deals with certain problems others can't.This action packed film consists of some great actors that truly sell the movie.

This quirky show follows a very diverse group of people as they travel through community college. This series is great to binge and is honestly one of the funniest and most interesting shows I’ve seen in awhile. While this show came out in 2009, the jokes and quality are timeless.

Bojack Horseman -

While this series may be animated it definitely is not for the younger audience whatsoever! Bojack Horseman follows the life of a humanoid horse who is a washed up actor and drowns in self pity, drugs and alcohol. This show revolves around Bojack getting his life back together before his show was cancelled.

The Great British Baking Show -

This British reality competition follows twelve amateur bakers as they compete for the title as Great Britain's Best Baker. Each week contestants are judged on their skills at making elaborate pastries and desserts of all kinds.

Avatar: The Last Airbender -

This series revolves around a fictional world divided into four nations, which resemble that of the four elements of nature: the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads. In each nation there resides benders, people who have the ability to control and manipulate the element specifically from their nation. However, a special bender named Aang has been chosen to be the Avatar and has the ability to learn all of the elements. Aang now is tasked with everything in time to put a stop to the ruthless, power hungry Fire Nation. This show was one of my favorites growing up and is filled with dynamic characters, amazing music, and tons of action.

Baking in Quarantine

Staff Writer  - EMILY LAKIN - 5/18/2020

Ever since the worldwide pandemic has occurred, people are stressed out and worried about the unknown. Many people have been trying new coping mechanisms such as baking. According to psychologists, baking is a great way to relieve your stress and anxiety. Baking allows people to be creative by changing the flavor, shape, or color of their masterpiece. The smells of the vanilla, spices, and the smells of your creation cooking in the oven trigger your sensory memories to happier times. We remember the time when we first baked cookies with our grandparents or when our parents taught us how to bake bread. Another way baking can relieve stress is the amount of concentration that must go into following the recipe and measuring the correct amounts of ingredients. Measuring the exact amounts of flour, sugar, and other ingredients takes your mind off of the stressful events that are happening in the world today. The end result of baking is also very rewarding because you can eat the delicious treat you spent so much time making.

Due to the increase in people baking new things in quarantine, the flour and yeast supply has decreased. However, the reason why the flour and yeast supply has decreased is not due to the main reason everyone may think. The real reason why the supply is down is because the flour and yeast shipments are inconsistent and sporadic. Normally, stores are stocked with a set amount of flour and they do not run out of it. Flour and yeast are not on everyone’s weekly grocery list, but now that everyone is trying the new recipes they found online, the flour and yeast supply is going much faster than before. Many flour suppliers only have large bags of flour such as 50 pound bags that restaurants only buy. Since many restaurants are closed or not making as much food, they are not buying as much flour. So next time you head out to the grocery store, pick up your flour and yeast to try a new type of bread or baked goods.

The TikTok Whipped Coffee

Staff Writer - AMANDA ISWALT - 4/27/20

During quarantine, many teens have looked to the app TikTok for a form of entertainment. TikTok is a video app that shares lipsync, short dance, comedy, and talent videos. The recent craze on the app is whipped coffee.

Whipped coffee originated from Greece, India, Pakistan, and Southeast Asia. The coffee was served at food stands and coffee shops. The particular whipped coffee grew in fame from being shown on a Korean show called “Pyunstorang.”

Now how does one make the iconic whipped coffee? The ingredients are simple: instant coffee, sugar, hot water, milk, and ice. First, combine 2 tablespoons of instant coffee, ½ teaspoon of granulated sugar, and 2 tablespoons of hot water in a bowel. Add more sugar for a sweeter taste. Then whip (with a hand mixer or a whisk) the combination for up to 15 minutes for a whipped texture. Pour milk in a glass with ice and spoon the fluffy mixture over the milk. Then when you’re ready to drink after taking photos, mix and serve!

Sounds easy right? I decided to test it myself! I followed the instructions and got something pretty basic. To be honest, it was not very good. It tasted very bitter and the whipped topping was more caramel-like. I was determined to perfect this. I ended up doing it the next day, and having some improvement. On the third day, I decided to perfect this drink one way or another. I measured the ingredients precisely and used vanilla almond milk.

In my opinion, I believe the vanilla almond milk helps it taste sweeter. I used a hand mixer for a more fluffy texture.  Overall, I did enjoy this drink and I think everyone should try it once.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the Coronavirus Escape We’ve All Been Waiting For

I think it’s safe to say that we all need a vacation right now. However, with the Coronavirus Pandemic currently forcing us all into quarantine, that is impossible for all of us. Luckily, Nintendo recently released a brand new installment of the Animal Crossing series on March 20 for the Nintendo Switch console. This may have been the most convenient time for a nice, peaceful, nostalgic video game to come out in history, and the sales statistics suggest this as well. During the month of its release in the U.S., it has already become the best-selling entry in the franchise’s history. It is also the country’s third-best launch for any Nintendo game ever, following Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Super Smash Bros Brawl. New Horizons is also already the No. 2 best-selling game in the U.S. for 2020, behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

So, why are so many people obsessed with Animal Crossing in the first place? Well, speaking as a dedicated fan who has played all five installments of the series, including spin off games such as Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, throughout my childhood, it is the most pleasant video game I’ve ever played. With more and more games with violence and gore as their common theme, it’s nice to play a game with a slower, more relaxed pace. In Animal Crossing, players take on the role of a lone human in a new town filled with cheerful animal villagers. Players are tasked by Tom Nook, a raccoon who bombards you with debts and mortgages you never agreed to, with building a thriving society filled with shops, bridges, and other accommodations for your animal neighbors. There are no high scores, vampire Nazis, or final bosses.

Each installment in the series has a slightly different progression of gameplay, the main difference being if you are moving into a forest, town, city, or island, which is the location of the recently released version. New Horizons built off of the success of the last installment, New Leaf, which came out for the 3DS in 2013 and sold over 12.45 million copies worldwide. After seven years, fans were craving for a new entry. New Horizons has more landscape and furniture customization than ever before. The game recently had a major Earth Day Update on April 23, which brought back characters from previous installments such as Leif, who is a sloth that runs a garden shop with bushes and flowers for even further island customization.

Many assume this game is targeted toward young children because of the general cuteness of the graphics, but surprisingly, a large demographic of players are millennials ages 20-30. For adults, Animal Crossing offers the white-picket fence American dream that is increasingly elusive, especially during coronavirus-induced economic stress. Whether you are a long time fan of Animal Crossing, such as myself, or are reading about it for the first time, I highly recommend trying out this game.

How Houseplants Help You through Quarantine

Staff Writer - ANYA WHITMAN - 4/27/20

Many people acknowledge that houseplants can transform a home into a fresher, cleaner living space as well as adding a touch of greenery as home decor. But many don’t realize the extent of benefits that come from adding plants to your home. Houseplants are shown to improve mental and physical well-being in a plethora of ways. Indoor plants can also boost mental clarity, increase productivity, and simply make you happier to be inside, which is something many of us could use at these times.

It is common knowledge that plants give off oxygen, but an amazing fact about indoor plants is that they can remove toxins from the air that comes from everyday items. For example, benzene is a toxin that comes from household items such as glues, paints, and furniture wax. Formaldehyde is another toxin that can come from wood products, paints, and carpets. Low levels of formaldehyde can cause reactions like nasal and eye irritation, an increase in your risk of asthma, or even neurological effects. If this makes you slightly uneasy, there is good news. Research has shown that houseplants can effectively reduce the amount of formaldehyde and benzene from the air. Some of the most effective plants in doing so include the peace lily, chinese evergreen, gerbera daisy, and the pot mum plant.

But there are even more impressive benefits of houseplants, like that they can promote healing and reduce illnesses. Houseplants increase the humidity in your living space, which studies have shown can have multiple positive effects on your health. For example, this can lessen the instances of dry skin and sore throats, while also decreasing the survival and transmission of viruses. Studies have also shown that houseplants in the environment of patients recovering from surgery can result in less pain, lethargy, and anxiety. But you don’t have to be in recovery to reap the benefits of houseplants, which also boost your mental abilities. A study by the University of Michigan showed that houseplants can increase memory retention by up to 20 percent, and another study showed that workers had a 12 percent faster reaction time when plants were introduced to their windowless working space.

Houseplants have so many benefits that go beyond what many people realize. Nature can help people in many ways, which is displayed by all the benefits of houseplants. If cleaner air, increased happiness, greater productivity, and more healing sound good to you, then houseplants may be the perfect addition to your living space.

Pandemic Dreams

Have you been having abnormally vivid dreams lately? Well, you are not alone. Ever since the world pandemic began the number of Google searches for “weird, vivid dreams” has doubled. So why are all us having weird dreams at a time like this? According to researchers, dreams usually process what just happened or what happened a long time ago. Since there is so much going on in the world today, your brain is just processing all of the information you receive throughout that day.

Many people also claim they do not dream, but in fact, they do. People who claim they don’t normally dream, are coming forward and saying they are starting to remember the dreams they had the night before. This could be because of the situation all of us are living in.

If you're having more nightmares instead of weird dreams, that is okay too. Dreams are also a way of processing your emotions throughout the day. At this time many people are fearful, uncertain, and helpless because of the ongoing pandemic. These emotions could be coming through into your dreams and resulting in frequent nightmares. According to researchers, the most common nightmare since the pandemic started is a chase dream. Many people say their chaser does not have a face. Researchers say the chaser does not have a face because of the unknown circumstances from the coronavirus. There is a lot of uncertainty in the world right now, and your body is showing your true emotions through your dreams.

To cope with your dreams during the pandemic, try to do something like exercise during the day to take your mind off what's happening in the world today.

You're Stressing Me Out

Guest Writer - SPARKLE CHEERIO MILLER - 4/1/20

As we are all aware, almost the entire world is in a “lockdown” mode. Every human is staying indoors completing random tasks to pass the time. However, if you have a pet (especially a free-roaming one like dogs or cats), this new routine may actually be giving your in-home best friends stress. I know it may seem very concerning, but do not fret. As a dog myself, I will give tips on how to keep both you and your furry friend’s stress down to a minimum.

One reason why your best friend might be feeling a bit overwhelmed is because they don’t know what to do with all the extra cuddle and quality time. When we first enter into your life, there is already a routine established: wake up, go outside, eat, and then you disappear for 6-8 hours, and then you’re back to play! During the 6-8 hours, us pets usually use this time to catch up on any sleep, have independent playtime, or explore the unfound corners of the trash bin. We need this independent time to allow us to develop a sense of independence and build our own experiences. Now that everyone is home, it is quite a paw-some time, yet, it can also be too much at once. Having our family home 24/7 is not something we are used to. The best way to ensure your friend doesn't become stressed out is to allow for some alone time for your pet. Maybe go for a run, or go to a private room and catch up on procrastinated projects. This will allow you to get back on your own personal schedule, as well as let your furball get into theirs.

Routines are also a great way to calm your pet. Create a new schedule and try to follow it enough to make sure your pet can get into the flow of it as well. Maybe move morning feeding times a little later to allow for a little more shut-eye. Or make it a habit to go outside with your pet for some fresh air and playtime. Building a routine that works for everyone in your household will cause less stress for you and for us.

Even though it might seem like we are going through a ruff time at the moment, spending it with us can help keep your own stress and anxiety levels down and bring the smiles and laughter up. If you are currently looking to have a furry friend, animal shelters across the state are looking for people to foster and ensure that we can all have a safe and happy time indoors.

I Attempted to Secure a Decent Routine During Quarantine: Senior Edition

Senior Editor - SIMONE MILLER - 4/1/20

Recently, Pennsylvania Governor, Tom Wolf, has announced that Berks County schools will be closed “indefinitely.” Unsure of how the Coronavirus schedule will pan out, students across the state have attempted to establish a new routine that revolves around online classroom work, and attempting to make as minimal contact with family members as possible. In order to try and maintain some sanity, I personally have been attempting to establish some type of routine.

After scouring the internet, I discovered that in order to establish a brand-new routine, one must have: a purpose, a plan, motivation, and repetition. I already knew that I wanted to have something that closely resembles a typical school day while trying to maintain a better than usual sleep schedule. So, on March 28th, this past Saturday, I decided to start a brand-new routine. Here is that story:

The first week after it was announced that we would not be returning to school, I decided that for the first few weeks that it would be a time of relaxation. I slept in until noon, ate breakfast at six in the evening and played video games until the night was suddenly morning. However, after a while, the “typical teen lifestyle” began to bore me. I no longer wanted to wake up in the middle of the afternoon and have next to zero time left to do tasks, like online homework, with deadlines. With that, I decided to start a new routine.

My plan was to wake up every weekday at eight o’clock in the morning and then run for five minutes on the treadmill to simulate what I would normally do everyday for gym class - and after not running for two weeks, the first day was no walk in the park. After the morning jog, I sit and enjoy my breakfast while starting my online classes. In order to stay entertained, I practice playing my instrument by googling sheet music to any song that is currently stuck in my head that day.  In the afternoons I then go hiking at a nearby trail, while practicing good social distancing of course. Finally in the evenings, I listen to relaxing music or watch Netflix and aim to hit the hay around eleven at the latest.

It is definitely not the most sophisticated routine, but it definitely does the trick. It is always a good idea to establish some sort of schedule for yourself and your family in order to keep everyone focused and time efficient. However, as long as you are practicing good hygiene care and follow the guidelines given by the CDC and government officials, just try your best to have fun and make the most of the time you have with everyone in the household. Maybe you’ll find out that family game night is not the worst thing that could happen. Stay safe!

Super Troupers: Students in the Spotlight

Senior Editor - Simone Miller

This year, Exeter High School Students traveled to the Greek island of Kalokairi for the widely-known production of MAMMA MIA! The story follows young Sophie Sheridan (Chloe Marturano, junior) as she is in the middle of finishing the process of planning her wedding to her adoring husband-to-be Sky Ryman (JT Yocom, senior). By her side since the beginning is her single mother Ms. Donna Sheridan (Kelsey Malone, senior). Living a radical lifestyle in her youth, Donna had Sophie out of wedlock, not knowing who her daughter’s father is. Donna never shares this with Sophie. The only people who know anything about Donna’s endeavors are her closest friends, Rosie Mulligan (Hope Davis, senior) and Tanya Cresham-Leigh (Emma Stapley, senior) who have been with her since her college days. However, as Sophie has now matured into a young adult, she longs to find the missing piece and attempts to discover who her true father is.

Unfortunately, she reaches a dead end. When searching with her friends, Ali (Maggie Rudolph, senior) and Lisa (Julia Weaver, sophomore), she comes across three men who could possibly be her father: Sam Carmicheal (Grayson Hale), Harry Bright (Jeremy Weaver), and Bill Austin (Josh Pack).  Sophie decides that her best option is to send a wedding invite to all three of the men in hopes that once they arrive, she will be able to tell who her actual father is. This adventure takes our characters on a whirlwind of experiences with amazing songs by the musical group ABBA, colorful dance numbers and just an all-around delightful and entertaining experience.

For our very own students, this show has also been a very inspiring and impactful adventure. “This is my literal dream role,” Chloe Marturano (Sophie) says. “I’ve wanted to play Sophie since I was three years old, so it’s pretty awesome.”

However, since it is such a well known show, the Exeter actors were not just nervous for the actual production, but more for the execution of their intended characters, especially those with such a high profile.

“I’m really grateful that I got this opportunity and I just hope I brought justice to the Donna that everybody knows and loves!” says Kelsey Malone (Donna).

The Exeter community is confident in their young actors and actresses in the Exeter Senior High School drama department, knowing that they delivered, as always, a show-stopping performance.

As the final days of rehearsing came to a close, everyone was already wondering what the next performance would be. As there are no hints to what production idea is up director Kathy Galtere’s sleeves, the students are more focused on recruiting new faces to fill the future empty spaces. For anyone who is apprehensive of joining the theater program, JT Yocom, the actor who plays Sky Ryman, has some encouraging words.

“Honestly, just go out of your comfort zone; I used to think that musicals were so weird...and then I did them my junior year, and it was the best experience of my life. Try something new, make new friends and honestly you won’t regret it.”
