What is the Second Step® Program?

This year, our teachers are delivering classroom lessons from the Second Step® Curriculum, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children's social-emotional skills.

To address our students' social-emotional learning, our teachers teach weekly lessons using the Second Step® Curriculum. It's research-based and made for elementary school students. The lessons take around 15 - 30 minutes and are designed to help children both in and out of school.

At the beginning of the school year, introductory letters were sent home. You may reference these letters down below, available in English and Spanish.

What is Social-Emotional Learning?

Social-Emotional Learning helps people:

Understand and manage their emotions
Set and achieve positive goals
Have and show empathy for others
Establish and maintain positive relationships
Make responsible decisions

It promotes social-emotional competence and helps children with skills such as self-management, relationship skills, and problem-solving. SEL can also help create a positive school climate and build a community where students and adults can thrive together, improving educational and social-emotional outcomes. At EBCA, the goal is to create a positive school climate where students and adults can thrive together, improving social-emotional competence and academic achievement. Follow along throughout the year as each unit progresses to support your child's social-emotional development at home.
