Students are given theme-based vocabulary words to learn for a school-wide test twice a semester. Grades 3+4 have four new words per week. Grades 5+6 have six new words per week. For the test, twenty words are chosen at random and Grade 3-6 students are to write the English corresponding to each Chinese phrase. Students who earn scores of 90+ are rewarded.
Grades 1+2 focus on matching uppercase letters to lowercase letters. They are not expected to spell the vocabulary words; rather, the goal is for them to recognize the shape of the vocabulary words of everyday objects, food, and animals. Theirs is a matching test, and not a spelling test.
