Decolonization
Decolonization
Introduction
This final portfolio looks at how the work of Leny Strobel helped me to better understand my Filipino-American identity. Strobel's analysis focused on two main points. First, she says Filipino-Americans need to have stronger knowledge and appreciation of Filipino culture, history, and traditions. Knowing more about their cultural roots is important for removing the effects of colonialism on the Filipino-American experience. Second, Strobel emphasizes the need to closely examine and challenge the gender roles and dynamics within Filipino and Filipino-American communities. This includes looking at how mothers have traditionally had more power, while fathers have been quieter. It also means considering how gender connects with other factors like social class and race. In other words, Strobel's work showed that fully exploring their Filipino-American identity requires not just rediscovering their cultural heritage, but also critically examining how gender has been shaped within the Filipino diaspora.Â
