Letterpress is a traditional relief printing technique, using type. Movable type printing was first invented in China using ceramic type in AD 1040, however Johannes Gutenberg is credited with the development in the West, in about 1440, of modern movable type printing from individually cast, reusable letters set together in a "forme" (frame or chase). This allowed printing to become much faster, and producing multiple repeated copies much easier.
In our Printmaking workshop we a Vandercook Press (1961) and have over 40 different font types and sizes. Click here to view our Print Making Type Index and available fonts and point sizes.
Selecting your chosen typeface from the stock we have. Working line by line using the composition stick to set your type. Utilising the spacers will help create your desired alignment. Remembering to work in reverse! This can be checked using the mirrors during this step.
The lines of type are securely locked into place within the chase. Then again locked into the press' bed called the printing platan.
Ink is loaded up on the rollers. Paper is secured into place. The Machine is turned on and the user guides the rollers forward to print onto the paper.
Once printing is completed, the ink needs to be removed from the rollers and type needs to be cleaned down. Please follow the guidance provided in the induction.
