This website has been developed by AHP students on leadership placements from Sheffield Hallam University. It is designed to inform students who have been allocated leadership, research or education placements, as well as for practice educators who would like information and resources to help them develop these placements in their organisation. This page gives an overview of practice based learning and the 4 pillars of practice.

The demands of the of the population on the healthcare sector is changing. Ageing populations, Covid-19, increasing waiting lists and times, require more AHP graduates. To meet this demand, placement variation and innovation is being implemented to build a more flexible and well rounded work force who meet the expectations and needs of modern healthcare.

The areas these placements will focus on are based on a multi-professional framework for advanced clinical practice, developed by Health Education England in 2017, in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement. These placements allow for skills across all pillars to be developed, improving patient care and better preparing AHP graduates for advanced opportunities in their careers.
Below is a short summary of the skills associated with each pillar:
Leading yourself and others to improve patient centred care through MTD, service and practice collaboration.
Providing clinical teaching of professionals, pre and post-reg students, or academically at colleges and universities
Developing your scope of practice in areas such as health promotion, shared decision making, advanced communication, safeguarding, mental and physical health assessments.
Undertaking research, evaluating practice deliver and critically appraising research for evidence based practice.
This webinar by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy discusses practice based learning in the pillars of research, education and leadership. Both educator and student experiences are presented and it gives an overview of the impact of these placements on the future workforce. It is applicable to all AHP's.
