Health & Safety
Professional Preparation for your Placement
Introduction
To prepare you for your Placement Experience - whether this be a Sandwich Placement, Short Placement, Applied Project or Work Experience Placement - you are required to complete this short Health and Safety: professional preparation for your placement training module. The module will introduce you to your role and responsibilities around Health and Safety, provide an overview of Risk Assessments, and the steps you need to take to getting your placement approved, including the submission of appropriate paperwork and completion of an assessment based on the content of this training. The health & safety aspect of your placement is all part of your development on your journey to becoming a professional.
Your Placement Experience - Your Responsibility
You are responsible for sourcing and making all the arrangements for your placement experience. You may have self sourced your own opportunity, taken up something that has been advertised by the University, or perhaps you are taking up an extended opportunity with your current employer. Regardless of how your placement has been sourced, the content of this short training module is applicable to all students, and must be completed as one of the stages of approval.
Structure
The training is compromised of videos, short presentations and blocks of information, split up with reflection questions at key points as you end a particular section, to encourage you to stop and think about what you have just learned. The content of the training is as follows:
1.1 - Health & Safety At Work
1.2 - Risk Assessments
1.3 - Hazards in the workplace
1.4 - Your Workplace
1.5 - Roles and Responsibilities
1.6 - Getting Your Placement Approved
Section 1.4 entitled 'Your Workplace' gets you to think about your specific workplace, and any health and Safety considerations that you need to take on board, or take action with, prior to proceeding. Within this section of the training you may be directed to further information, either hosted on this site or provided by your supporting academic and hosted on Blackboard, and will likely need to engage with some further specific information, training or videos, to support you on your placement. You should then return to the H&S training page and complete sections 1.5 and 1.6, before starting the assessment.
Think and Reflect
Throughout this training module, you will come across regular prompts at key points which encourage you to think about what you have just read and reflect on what this might mean for you in your placement experience.
These 'think and reflect' sections of the training will be highlighted on the page by a prominent red band, and will pose questions for you to consider about your own individual situation and personal experiences in relation to the placement you are looking to undertake.
These questions are not formally assessed, but we encourage you to take notes around your responses, which will help you apply your learning from this module and take action accordingly as you embark on your placement experience.
Assessment
At the end of the Health & Safety Essentials training module, you will be directed to complete the linked assessment. The assessment will firstly ask you to confirm you have reviewed the content of this training module, and will then ask you to demonstrate your understanding by asking you questions about your placement setting, which will be shared with your placement provider. This is a mandatory requirement, and one of the first things you will need to do in order to commence a placement experience.
The assessment is hosted on Handshake.
