206 bones
650 muscles
360 joints
60,000 miles of blood vessels
90,000 miles of nerves
Luckily you only need to understand most of it! Within this section you will find an introduction to the bones, muscles and joints of the body, use the drop down menu from 'The Human Body' tab above.
Within this introduction you will find different sections considering terminology, bones, joints and muscles. There are videos to watch, information to read and different tasks to complete.
Terminology:
Firstly watch this great introduction into some of the terminology that will need to be second nature to you.
The body is described as having 3 planes set at right angles to each other.
sagittal plane
Divides the body vertically into equal left and right halves
Coronal plane
Divides the body into front and back portions
Transverse plane
Divides the body into upper and lower portions
Planes are used to describe the direction the movement occurs, for example:
Nodding your head – is movement in the sagittal plane
Shaking head ‘no’ – movement in the transverse plane
Bending to the side with the trunk – movement in the frontal plane
More information around planes and axis of moment are found in section 2a
When describing movement it is important to think of how the movement occurs – what plane of movement it is, to state the movement direction and also the bone or body part, which is moving.
Watch this animation on the left. It shows you many body movements - but not for every joint. Think about which of the movements would apply to more than one joint.
