We know there are many challenges facing racially minoritised students on health care placements affecting the student experiences. These challenges can arise from organisational and placement culture, challenging environments, Minoritised students being treated differently, assumptions and stereotypes or educators applying a deficit model to their minoritised students (Nightingale, Parkin and Nelson, 2019). All of these factors can negatively impact on minoritised student experience. Educators and academic staff need guidance to develop their understanding and ability to empathise with the Minoritised students' experiences whilst minoritised students need support to develop coping strategies to manage these potentially difficult placement experiences. This project aims to work collaboratively with students in developing a project that will firstly prioritise the issues that are important from the student perspective and develop resources as appropriate to improving minoritsed students' placement experiences.
Global Ethnic Majority Practice Partnership Group Meetings
Every 4-6 weeks SHU meet with some of our practice partners where students access placements to discuss race equity and any issues of racism. It is an opportunity to share and improve ensuring all students have are able to thrive and enjoy their placements.
