Page 5: The Summer Ends, but the Memories Last
As the summer winds down, the boys begin to go their separate ways. Life moves on. The narrator—an adult Smalls—reflects on the impact that summer had on all of them. One by one, we learn what became of each of the sandlot kids: some got jobs, others moved, and one “got really into the '60s and no one ever saw him again.”
Benny grows up to play professional baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Smalls becomes a sports broadcaster. In a touching final scene, Smalls is calling a Dodgers game when Benny steals home—just like the hero he always was.
Their eyes meet, and they smile. The summer of the sandlot may be long gone, but their friendship, forged through baseball and youthful adventure, has never faded.
