Page 2: The Legend of the Beast
As the summer heats up, Smalls becomes an integral part of the sandlot crew. The boys play baseball daily, share laughs, and create memories that will define their childhood. Through this time, Smalls hears about “The Beast”—a ferocious dog living beyond the outfield fence that guards a yard full of lost baseballs. The boys speak of it like a mythical monster, said to have devoured trespassers whole. It's both a legend and a warning, and they never dare to retrieve balls hit over that fence.
Their adventures continue with small but memorable moments: they get kicked out of a community pool when Squints fakes drowning just to kiss lifeguard Wendy Peffercorn, they play a nighttime Fourth of July game under fireworks, and they face off against a rival Little League team—whom they beat in spectacular fashion, proving their bond is more than just baseball.
