Using Special Access in D2L's Dropbox and Quiz toolset are practically the same, but we will focus on a Dropbox in this tutorial. Discussions do not have the option to provide Special Access.
Go to the D2L Dropbox tab in the Course Navbar.
Click on the dropdown arrow to the right of the Dropbox you want to give Special Access on and click on Edit Folder in the menu that appears.
Click on the Availability Dates & Conditions tab in the upper right.
Click on Manage Special Access.
A pop-up will appear giving you two options: Allow users with special access to submit outside the normal availability dates for this folder or Allow only users with special access to see this folder. Typically, the first option is what most faculty go with and is also selected by default. Click on Add users to Special Access.
In the pop-up that appears, you can then change the Due Date and Start/End Date as needed. NOTE: Quizzes have additional options, including changing the time limit and changing the number of attempts allowed.
Scroll down toward the bottom and you should see a list of students in the class. Simply check the box next to the student's name (or, if multiple students require this similar extension, check the box next to their names. You may also find it beneficial to the per page number in the bottom right to 200). NOTE: For Quizzes, you may see additional names. You can safely ignore them as they are all D2L Admins.
Click Save. This will send you to the previous window where you can see an overview of students that have Special Access. To edit a student's Special Access, click on the pencil icon. To revoke Special Access, click on the X.
When you are finished, click on Save and Close.
Then choose one of the Save options to save your Dropbox.
Setting up a D2L Accommodation is fairly easy and done through the classlist.
Click on the Classlist tab in the Course Navbar.
Click on the dropdown arrow to the right of a student's name and choose Edit Accommodations.
Check the box to the left of Modify Time Limit.
Then you can choose either to multiply the quiz time or simply add extra time.
Then click on Save.
When you go back and look at the student's name, you will see a gear icon behind an outline of a person. This means a D2L Accommodation has been applied. You will also see this when you view their quiz Submission.
