Accommodations give additional access on course activities. D2L offers two types of accommodations:
Special Access
D2L Accommodations
Special Access is just that. It is an option that allows an instructor to provide students access to a D2L Tool that they would otherwise not have had. This is most often used on D2L Quizzes and D2L Dropboxes. Special Access is a temporary, one-time accommodation.
D2L Accommodations are more permanent and only for D2L Quizzes. They give a particular student some extra amount of time, either in minutes or by making use of a multiplier. In general, you do not need to set up a D2L Accommodation unless you receive a request from the Office of Student Accessibility Services.
As stated earlier, Special Access is a temporary, one-off access to a D2L Tool, which includes D2L Quizzes, Discussions, and Dropboxes. For example, let's say you have a Dropbox with a start and end date. For some reason, a student missed uploading the assignment, whether because of a temporary, but serious, illness, death in the family, etc. You can temporarily allow the student to upload to this dropbox so all of the student submissions for this assignment are in one place instead of having to search for emails. Additionally, with special access, you can give the student several days of access to the D2L Dropbox whereas with a D2L Accommodation you typically are only giving several extra hours.
As for D2L Accommodations, you typically give accommodation when you get a request from the Office of Student Accessibility Services. The Office of Student Accessibility Services will also tell you roughly how much longer a student should get on an exam. As stated above, D2L Accommodations do not give additional time to any other activity or D2L Tool except for Quizzes and Exams.
