Family Therapy
Family therapy is a form of treatment that is designed to address specific issues affecting the health, wellbeing and functioning of a family. It can be used to help a family through a difficult period. Behavioural or emotional problems in children are common reasons for visiting me as a family therapist. The child’s problem does not exist in a vacuum and strong research has shown that when addressed within the context of the family, changes occur. The family plays a long term supportive role in one’s life, which does not always mean blood relationship family members in the same household. I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Family Therapy and professional membership with the Australian Association of Family Therapy (AAFT). Treatment of child and adolescent behavioural problems, loss and grief, marital conflicts, couples, depression and anxiety are my preferred areas of focus and expertise.
In a nutshell, the goal of family therapy, depending on the presenting problems is to work together to heal any mental, emotional or psychological problems causing tension and separation within family relationships. Guiding the family towards a healthy life the aim is to improve communication, problem solving techniques, handling family situations, and creating a better functioning home environment.
