This half day of professional development is entirely structured around both district-directed and teacher-directed professional learning and development. It is MVYPS' hope that schools will take this time to structure PD and teaming efforts that promote their school and staff informed initiatives/school improvement actions. Also, it is MVYPS' hope that teachers will take advantage of the latter half of the day to engage in professional development that is collaborative, authentic and relevant to their practice, related to individual professional development plans, and enriches the learning experience of the students in their classrooms (see note below). ESPs have a normal contractual work day on this PD day.
MVRHS- 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
District-led PD 11:30 to 1:30 pm*
Teacher-directed PD 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm

District-Directed PD
*On May 29th, ALL instructional staff will be required to complete a training and practice for reviewing curriculum materials using the CRE Scorecard (NYU Steinhardt School). The training should take no more than the 2-hour dedicated time for this training and practice.
Who: ALL MVYPS instructional staff
Time:
MVRHS- 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
ALL MVRHS instructional staff will start the training at 11:30 am by using the Zoom link below.
Kim Garrison and Richie Smith will provide directions, context, and answer any questions that staff may have about the process.
After the brief introduction by Zoom, all staff will complete the training and work either individually or in teams, as they choose.
The Zoom link will stay open for questions as they may arise for staff throughout the practice. However, staff are not required to stay on Zoom once the introduction is complete.
Early Childhood & Elementary Schools- 12:30 - 2:30 pm
ALL early childhood and elementary/middle school instructional staff will start the training at 12:30 pm by using the Zoom link below.
Purpose: The purpose of this training will be for all instructional staff to review curriculum materials for "simplistic and demeaning generalizations, lacking intellectual merit, on the basis of race, color, sex, gender identity, religion, national origin, and sexual orientation (DESE)." This is essentially a practice in how to identify cultural bias in the curriculum materials that we use in MVYPS. All MVYPS instructional staff will be required to review a small set of curriculum materials of their choice to review using a tool called the Culturally Responsive Education (CRE) Scorecard (NYU).
While it is not required, steps to help prepare for the training were sent out by Richie Smith on May 21, 204. They are also included below.
NOTE: This is a training and practice. This is not a complete audit of your curriculum, nor is it an evaluation of your teaching practice. However, we have to demonstrate to DESE that all instructional staff have engaged in a training and has had some practice in the use of their audit tool.
Location: Zoom to start, self-directed in schools to complete the training following Zoom intro

I only ask that you choose the material/s that you wish to review and have it available for May 29th. I am not asking you to conduct the scorecard audit prior to May 29th.
(3) Please take a look at the below linked Google Folders that contain instructions, the scorecard and additional supplemental materials. Please print the materials that you will find in either of the below Google Folders, along with your own materials for review. You will need this for May 29th. NOTE: You will not be able to access links if you print this document.
Training Website: All links in the Training Checklist are live and you do not need to access the website to complete the training. However, the website has everything that you need for this training and is set up to mirror the checklist. The website does have additional information and context for this training and practice. Some instructional staff and administrators may be interested in having this information.
Scorecard Google Form: This is the form that every individual or team of instructional staff must submit to complete the training, have their completion logged, and to receive PDPs for this training. It is also, more importantly, a place to provide feedback and insight into your experience with the training and the Scorecard overall.
Teacher-Choice Professional Development Opportunities
The following opportunities have been organized by MVYPS leaders and educators to provide rich, high quality PD options on this day.
Except where noted, these options are all voluntary. These opportunities have been planned during teacher-directed time.
For 2023-2024, MVYPS will support the ongoing work of Communities of Practice as a high quality form of professional development. Through entitlement grant funds, the Superintendent is able to provided CoPs that have experienced ongoing success and support in the past with the opportunity to continue their work. In addition, a new AI CoP has be specifically developed to help support a professional position on AI in education at MVYPS that is informed by its educators specifically. CoPs are required to meet for no less than 6 hours across the school year, with times being organized by the facilitator and the CoP members. Some CoP facilitators may choose to offer meeting times during teacher-directed PD time, while others may also meet after school and during other non-contractual times.

Who: All MVYPS educators and staff interested in learning the foundations and theory behind Collaborative Problem Solving*.
Time: Self-directed, self-paced virtual learning series [2 hours total]
You do not have to complete all of this module today, however, in order to get credit towards PDPs, you do need to complete it by June 18th. Anyone who has started the training in the past and would like to complete it may do so by that date.
Purpose: MVYPS has worked with Think:Kids to provide MVYPS educators and staff free access to this learning module.
This 2-hour, self-paced course introduces the basic principles of Collaborative Problem Solving, an innovative, trauma-informed, and evidence-based approach to understanding and helping kids and adults with behavioral challenges. The principles of Collaborative Problem Solving® will be discussed, while outlining how the approach is uniquely suited to the needs of today's educators and students. The CPS approach aligns with CASEL's 5 core competencies, integrates with MTSS frameworks, PBIS, and restorative practices, is evidence-based, neurobiologically and trauma-informed, and child and family-centered.
Participants learn a more empathic and accurate understanding of what causes unmet expectations and challenging behavior and are exposed to an overview of the three key components of the approach. These courses lay the foundation for attending Essential Foundation in Collaborative Problem Solving (Level 1).
Objectives:
Understand what really causes challenging behavior or unmet expectations in others.
Discover the limitations of motivational approaches as a solution to unwanted behavior.
Learn three ways to respond to unwanted behavior and the best times to use them.
See how the approach can positively change interactions and outcomes with youth and adults.
Location: A link to the learning platform will be provided upon registration. Please register here by 10:30 am on 5/29.
