Teacher relates Big Idea to the Essential Question or overall understanding of the lesson. Big Idea can also be related to the main theme/topic of a story.
Students draw icons into consumable books related to the topic. Common icons could be Language of the Discipline, Details, Big Idea

Students introduce themselves using icons chosen by themselves or the teacher.
Teacher models how a frame can be used to do research when reading non-fiction text. Students then each researched a classic toy and created their own frames.
Students create a new creature and use the icons to help describe the creature.
