Introduction to the Militär Geographische Arbeiten
The Militär Geographische Arbeiten consist of a collection of publications of the geographical army services, dealing with up-to-date maps and geographic descriptions of the different countries and regions of the world that are useful for the German armed forces. A study of a region or country consisted generally of a description, a collection of maps and a collection of city maps:
The description normally consisted of 3 books: a textbook (Textheft), a picture book (Bildheft) and a book with a listing and description of all municipalities (Ortschaftsverzeichnis).
The map collection consisted of maps, both topological and geographical maps. The geographical maps contained information such as population ethnics, railways, telephone and telegraphic networks, industry etc.
The city maps consisted of topographical maps as well as maps on how to maneuver through the city (Stadtdurchfahrtpläne). These Stadtdurchfahrtpläne were collected in a book, while the topographical maps were added as individual maps.
All these books and maps were collected in a paper binder.
The list described here has an entry of every individual document that made up a military geographical study. Depending on the size of the study, they were referred to differently. Common naming included Militärgeographische Angaben, Militärgeographische Einzelangaben, Militärgeographische Beschreibung, Militärgeographische Studie and Militärgeographischer Überblick.
Below you find the alphabetical listing of the individual works, and the references to the web pages. End 2023, I updated these lists to a great extend in the sense that the majority of the books and maps are represented by downloadable high resolution documents: the books Textheft, Bildheft and Stadtdurchfahrtpläne as high resolution PDF files, while the maps either in high resolution PDF or JPF format. In total, I've uploaded about 11 Gbite of data, most of which originates from the Bundesarchiv and several from my own collection.

Next to the individual Militär Geographische Arbeiten maps and geographic descriptions, several supporting documents were published. Two of such documents are represented on the right, being:
A reference book Landesweise Zusammenstellung der Karten und Mil-Geo-Arbeiten that summarizes the publications, as well as the individually published maps that were published by the Abteilung für Kriegskarten und Vermessungs Wesen the geological servey of the Oberkommando des Heeres army high command. The downloadable pdf of this manual is dated 1943.
An overview of the cartographic symbols used in the maps, the Kartenzeichen für militärgeographische Karten from 1944.
Next to the Militär Geologische Arbeiten, other important information on this topic is captured in the Planhefte and the Vademecum Hefte of the Merkblatt 33 and 34 series. The Planhefte describe the overview of the maps and other geographical information that is available per country. The Vademecum Hefte give an overview on the use of the maps and often are valid for larger regions such as Western Europe, Eastern Europe etc.
