Summer Learning

In the Mendon-Upton Regional School District our mission is to empower all learners to thrive. Our mission does not end with the last day of the school year. In fact, we encourage our school community to to engage in ongoing learning throughout the summer months. We believe that learning happens most powerfully and deeply when we nurture curiosity, discover interests, and pursue passions. We believe that deeper learning occurs when we engage in authentic experiences and create products that have meaning and relevance beyond the classroom. Therefore, the summer months are a unique opportunity for students to continue growing, learning, and engaging in their interests.

Furthermore, research indicates that the COVID-related school closures along with summer months are a risk factor for a decline in student learning. We believe that the "COVID and/or Summer Slide" are not a foregone conclusion. Instead, our high quality remote learning this spring coupled with continued ELA/Math literacy practice, summer reading, and hands-on learning experiences will launch our students forward into the next school year.

This summer learning webpage provides our summer reading lists alongside some targeted summer learning practice and inspired learning. Please scroll to the elementary and secondary sections below for an array of targeted options for continued learning.

ST Math Cut 1.mp4

GREAT NEWS!!

We are thrilled to have received two grants from the ONE8 Foundation to bring StMath to both Clough Elementary School and Memorial Elementary School. One of the recent grants is part of the MASS MATH Social Challenge to extend engaging math learning to participating students throughout the summer.

ST Math

ST Math is a PreK-8 visual instructional program that leverages the brain's spatial-temporal reasoning ability to solve mathematical problems. Its learning model is built upon a unique approach that uses challenging puzzles, non-routine problem solving, and informative feedback to provide equitable access to deep conceptual learning for students.

STMath Login Information

  • STMath is designed currently for computers and tablets. Unfortunately, ST Math will not be available on cell phones until the Fall.

  • If your child will be using an iPad to access ST Math, it is helpful to download the ST Math app before logging into Clever.

  • If a family has a MURSD iPad, you can access Clever by touching the Clever icon on the home screen.

  • You can access the MURSD's Clever Portal via this link.

  • Your child's username is his or her last name, his or her first initial and then his or her year of graduation

    • Ex: Gr. 4 student Holden Caulfield: CaulfieldH28

  • Your child's password is !nspireZZZZ with the Zs representing his or her lunch code.

Tips

  • ST Math has provided a Parent Kit for families that addresses frequently asked questions, an overview of the tool and ways to engage your child about what he or she is learning while playing the game.

  • Recommended time for students K-1 is 60 minutes per week and 90 minutes for students in grades 2-4.

  • Families can track STMath time using this simple Make Time for JiJi Calendar.

  • Students must fully exist ST Math in order for their progress to be saved. For more information on the process, check out :How to Exit ST Math

  • Puzzles: The first STMath puzzles will be very simple including one where your child will have to build JiJi, the penguin who serves as your guide through STMath. The purpose of this activity is to get your child used to the visual-based learning approach to the STMath program. After these initial introductory activities, the conceptual problems will begin.

  • If you're looking for more extensive support & ideas, ST Math has created this Resources for Parents webpage.

Kindergarten Summer Reading

Grade 1 Summer Reading

Grade 2 Summer Reading

Grade 3 Summer Reading

Grade 4 Summer Reading

Summer reading is a great opportunity to enhance reading skills and maintain fluency. According to a recent report from John Hopkins University's Center for Summer Learning, children who do not read over the summer actually lose ground in reading proficiency. The report concludes that the effect of reading 4-5 books during the summer is large enough to prevent a decline in reading scores from spring to fall.

Virtual Inspired Learning

Exploring the MURSD Portrait of a Learner

On June 19 we will host our first district-wide K-12 Virtual Inspired Learning Day. Our Virtual Inspired Learning Day will look a little different than our traditional Inspired Learning Days. Students will receive a link where they can explore careers, embark on virtual field trips, learn new skills, visit colleges virtually, and more. This Virtual Inspired Learning Day will serve as a resource for our students to utilize during and beyond the day as it will be available throughout the summer months.
