Reasons to Learn More Names
What's Holding Us From Learning More Names
After 3 quarters with 600 kids, I basically gave up trying to learn names. I thought my brain was just maxed out at that point. I was exhibiting a fixed mindset. Yet, I teach my students about the importance of having a growth mindset.
Additionally, I realized that the students DID not know each other's names either. How could we have a sense of community if the teacher and classmates do not even know each other's names!
Students Need To Learn Names, Too
As cited in Bandolopho(2020), Lewis(2016) clarifies that Belonging acts as a precursor to other aspects of positive functioning in the classroom. For instance, when students feel like they belong, they show more motivation, engagement, and self-efficacy. Thus social belonging is one of the first things educators should attend to because when it's lacking, students find it difficult to succeed academically and are less likely to thrive.
