We are a comprehensive obligatory and post-obligatory secondary education school located in Alhama de Murcia, in the South East of Spain. Our students (about 1,000 in total, although about 700 of those are enrolled in secondary education and the rest in vocational training diplomas) are aged 12 to 18 (even above that in the case of higher diplomas). Some of these students are taking part in bilingual education programmes, whereby they are taught at least one subject other than EFL (e.g. Maths, Biology or Technology) in English. There are about 80 members of staff.
We are really thrilled to participate in this Erasmus + Project as it involves two of the pilars of our school ethos: foreign languages learning, which drives our motivation to participate in this project and stems from the will to instill in our pupils a sense of community and partnetship with other European countries; and (due to weather/environment conditions of the part of Spain where our school is located), climatic change. The whole institution is highly committed to the implementation of environmentally-friendly policies and sustainable development. Thus, there is a project which has been running for already a number of years, called 0/50/50, where our students conduct energy-saving surveys to identify areas where we can reduce the school carbon footprint as much as possible (ideally down to 0). 50% of the savings accrued are used to introduce further environmentally-friendly systems (e.g. water recycling, energy-saving lighting systems, using renewable energies for A/C and heating, etc.) and the remaining 50% for other improvements in the school.
Therefore, we are particularly interested in participating in a project such as this one, closely connected with the protection of the environment, reducing waste, saving energy and water, switching to renewable resources, etc.
As the contact person for school, José Antonio Lozano Teruel, in his 15 years of experience as a foreign languages teacher, he has taken part in Leonardo projects for Vocational Courses in cooperation with partners from other European countries and also organised school trips for one-week language immersion programmes in the UK.
Blas Santiago Carrillo and Ángfl Silvente Ortega, the legal representatives for the school, both have experience in international cooperation on a European level and particularly in environmentally-friendly policies.
