Welcome to Honors English 9!
I’m excited to work with each of you this school year. Honors English is a rigorous course designed to prepare you for future advanced classes. While the material will be challenging, you’ll finish the course with a strong foundation in reading, writing, analysis, and research—skills that will support your academic success throughout high school and beyond.
Throughout the year, we’ll explore a variety of literary works, engage in academic and creative writing, participate in discussions and Literature Circles, create visual interpretations of texts, and build essential research skills. By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in your abilities and ready for the demands of future coursework—both here at Mingus and at the college level.
Here are some of the texts that we will be using this year
Texts:
- Fahrenheit 451
- To Kill a Mockingbird
- The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet
- Various Lit Circle Texts
- Numerous Poems
Classroom Expectations:
Classroom Equality & Respect Statement
In our classroom, every voice matters. We are a community of learners, and each person brings unique perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences that enrich our understanding. Respect is the foundation of everything we do—how we speak, listen, and learn together.
We will create a space where everyone feels safe to share their ideas, ask questions, and participate in meaningful discussions. Differences are not only valued here—they are essential to growth. We listen to understand, speak with kindness, and support one another as we challenge ourselves and each other.
Together, we will build a classroom where respect, equity, and empathy guide us—every day, in every interaction.
Statement on the use of AI:
In this class, your job is to grow into a better reader and writer. In order to do your job, you must read and write a lot. My job is to provide feedback to help you grow in your abilities. In order to do my job, I need to read YOUR writing. I need to know YOUR voice. With this established, AI generated or enhanced writing is not permitted. Usage of AI will result in a score of 0% on the assignment and a write up. There will be no exceptions.
Academic Integrity & Plagiarism
If you stole from a store and got caught, you would expect consequences. The same is true for stealing ideas and copying school work.
Your work must be original, meaning it comes from your brain, not AI or a friend’s brain.
Plagiarism is not tolerated. You will receive a zero for plagiarized work, an office referral, and contact home. Repeat offenses can result in a loss of credit based on MUHS policy.
Absences & Late Work
If you are absent, you are responsible for getting any missing work in a timely manner.
The teacher is responsible for providing you missing work and instructions after you advocate for yourself. Email is an excellent way to reach out to your teacher. The beginning of class is a difficult time as a teacher to explain previous lessons.
You have a week to turn in late assignments. If you were absent, make sure you note “ABSENT” and the date(s) you were gone at the top of the page. After one week, late work will not be accepted unless other arrangements have been made.
Turn in all late assignments to the basket on Mrs. Wolfe’s desk.

Bathroom Privileges:
Each student will receive FIVE passes each semester to leave the classroom. These passes will allow you to leave the classroom for any reason without question. Please be sure to use the bathroom and run errands on campus between classes, at lunch, or before and after school.
