SERENA SHARPLESS

My drawings come from my interest in distractions. I am a person who loses focus easily, the main thing that distracts me is other people. Specifically, the faces of other people. I often find myself getting lost in conversation because instead of focusing on the words I pay attention to their facial features. The face is means for identification, it is how we know someone, and it is the first thing we see when we look at a person. It fascinates me how there are billions of people in this world and everyone has a completely different face. The idea of my concentration is to depict these distractions with the same detail as I see them. I challenged myself by drawing difficult facial expressions. I stuck to the same medium all the way through yet became more comfortable with the values of light and dark. I found that not rushing a portrait made it so much better.
