Ways to Enhance the MTSD Middle School Band Experience
Here is a list of some of the things that are available to middle school band students in our area. We are fortunate to have several programs right in our own “backyard.” I hope that you all will read over them and give serious consideration to one or all of them. A great band starts with great musicians!

Private Instruction- There is no greater way to increase musicianship and technique than private instruction. This regular one-on-one time is impossible to replicate in the school environment. Music/etudes are chosen and assigned to develop and challenge each individual student. Issues with embouchure, articulation, reeds, hand position, etc. can be addressed in-depth. A teacher who performs/specializes on your instrument can provide valuable insight. Private instruction will benefit the advanced player as well as the struggling student and everyone in-between. Lessons are available through the local music stores and in individual studios. Please contact me with any questions.
UWM Honors Band – Each fall UWM hosts a Middle School Honors Band Festival. Our schools have historically been well represented in these festivals. This festival requires a director nomination and the ultimate decision for acceptance is made by the UWM Department of Bands. Decisions are based largely on past activities and instrumentation needs.
MYSO Wind Ensemble – This is a highly talented group of middle school (grade 6-9) students that rehearse on Thursdays from 6:45-8:30. More information and full details on how to schedule an audition appointment can be found on their website at www.myso.org or you can call them at 414-267-2950.
WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival - This festival, held each March, is a great way for students to enhance their band experience and allow them the chance to receive feedback on their performance as an individual or in a small ensemble. They will prepare a solo, duet trio, etc. and perform it for a WSMA adjudicator. It is a “win-win” endeavor. Even if the pressures of performance cause a student to not play to the best of their ability, they will learn valuable lessons about themselves and their musicality during the preparation. They will also become more familiar with the process so they are more comfortable in the future
WSMA Middle Level State Honors – This is the middle school version of Wisconsin’s “All-State” Band. It is an opportunity to perform under the baton of gifted educators. Music selected will be challenging and rewarding. You will also be in an ensemble with some of the best players in the state. Audition requirements vary for each instrument and can be found at www.wsmamusic.com or through Mr. Feigles. Audition sites are located in several different areas of the state (some traveling involved.) Our closest audition site is Dousman Kettle Moraine Middle School on a Saturday in April. Any student interested in auditioning should visit the WSMA website for timeline details and information for online registration. Online registration opens in early December and must be completed by early February. WSMA will not accept ANY late registrations. It would be a tremendous honor to be selected to this ensemble-I am always proud when we are represented!
