This semester, I refined my ability to plan meaningful and differentiated learning experiences. I created unit and lesson plans that were scaffolded to meet a range of student needs, drawing on strategies like leveled reading materials, guided writing templates, and tiered vocabulary. I also embedded technology and gaming into my planning to support engagement and equity. Using a student profile at the beginning of the practicum helped me get to know my learners’ strengths and challenges so I could plan more responsively and with purpose.
I want to improve my long-range planning and cross-curricular integration. I plan to collaborate with mentor teachers to refine scope and sequence templates and ensure smoother curriculum flow. I also want to build in more opportunities for student choice and autonomy by integrating UDL guidelines in my planning from the start.
Goal: To strengthen my ability to plan effective, curriculum-aligned lessons that support student engagement and learning.
Specific: I have developed science lesson plans that directly connect to curriculum outcomes and scientific evidence. In social studies, I created an inquiry-based unit by identifying big ideas, essential questions, and scaffolding learning activities. I also crafted a personal land acknowledgment to deepen my understanding of Indigenous perspectives.
Measurable: My growth in planning is evident through successfully designed lessons and units that align with learning objectives and engage students in meaningful ways.
Achievable: By applying what I have learned in my coursework, I continue to refine my lesson planning skills, ensuring that lessons are well-structured, purposeful, and inclusive.
Relevant: Effective planning is essential to my role as an educator, helping me create structured and engaging learning experiences that meet diverse student needs.
Time-Bound: As I progress in my teaching practice, I will continue to refine my planning skills by incorporating feedback, adapting lessons, and ensuring alignment with curriculum goals.
Goal - During my practicum, I will develop a series of lesson plans. I will design and implement at least 20 lesson plans, and evaluate their efficacy based on student engagement, participation, and understanding.
Strategy - I feel I can successfully prepare and implement these lesson plans with access to materials and guidance from my mentor teacher. I will complete these lesson plans throughout my practicum, keeping a consistent schedule for preparation and implementation.
Growth - My goal was accomplished for this practicum. Throughout my month I was able to verbally plan 1 on 1 with my mentor. It was a great experience to work through planning and differentiating/adapting to issues that may arrive throughout our week. Not only did we have a verbal understanding I also provided a running lesson plan with Ms. Craig which we were both able to refer to if needed. Ms. Criag provided me and her team partner with a document called the BIBLE which helped us all work as a team in planning daily, weekly, and monthly according to events or activities taking place.
Future Goal - For my future Planning SMART goal I want to attain more knowledge that will support my ability to effectively pace and plan for my future practicum
Lesson Plans
Teaching Team Schedule
Goal - To develop and implement differentiated instruction strategies that cater to the diverse learning needs of my students, and ensure that my teaching is appropriate for their grade level by utilizing clear planning and feedback throughout my field experience.
Strategy - I plan to achieve this goal by differentiating instruction to meet my tutor students' needs for each lesson. Through my weekly tutoring log, I will reflect on my teaching practice and seek feedback from my mentor teacher to tailor my teaching to the unique needs of 'W'.
Growth - I have developed differentiated instruction strategies that cater to the diverse learning needs of my tutor student. Through regular reflection and seeking feedback from my mentor teacher, I have been able to tailor my teaching to better suit each student's unique needs. This experience has reinforced the importance of differentiated instruction and its positive impact on student learning outcomes. I am committed to continuing to develop and implement effective strategies to ensure that my teaching is appropriate for the grade level and diverse needs of all my students.
Future Goal - My future goal is to further improve my planning process to better incorporate differentiated instruction strategies. I plan to achieve this by seeking out additional professional development opportunities and collaborating with colleagues to learn new techniques and best practices.
Goal - I would like to improve my ability to think ahead and ensure I have a route determined for my success. I need to know how each individual student learns and manages their time so I can help them, either with the entire class instruction or a pre-planned differentiation.
Growth - This year I learned how to enhance my planning to meet the needs of diverse learners through differentiation in a whole class instruction setting. When planning I must route out every possible avenue of discussion as well as determine my action plan for the lesson. Knowing my plan prior creates less room for error and certifies that I have backup plans in place for an issue that may come about. I saw this happen specifically this year in EDUC 2371 when my professors found a way to work around the instance of students not having enough one on one time for their tutoring assignment. They were able to create option 2 from their initial plans that still adhered to the outcome of the unit.
EDUC 2201 Painting Reflection
In our course this year in order to ensure that we understood and correctly assessed the meaning of planning we learned about the different stages of learning at different ages and how they will understand different things at different stages. We also had to make our own lesson plans to understand how planning is done and its effectiveness. My goal for planning is to use Alberta's program requirements to effectively set learning goals and objectives
In order to be an effective teacher, one must take their time to evaluate how they will effectively teach their students, and also attend to the students' personal learning needs. I've learned about the need for planning and how to effectively plan. Planning is a creative process that allows me to synthesize my understanding of the teaching pedagogy with my knowledge of learners, the curriculum, and the teaching context. If I can effectively plan out a course I will have a plan of action set to which I can follow throughout my teaching. In my planning, I will have prepared for any interruptions in the course or need for extra development.
