There are many types of referencing styles. Here is a non-exhaustive list:
APA - American Psychological Association
Chicago
MLA - Modern Language Association
Harvard
The referencing style that you will be asked to use may vary depending on the professor, class, or department. They are course/discipline dependent. For example, a history course will always use Chicago throughout.
Be sure to attend workshops to learn more about the referencing style you have to use, alongside many other learning and writing tips. The schedule for Workshops is already available, so be sure to set aside time to attend. Workshop Registration will open on September 3rd.
Sometimes it can be hard to find all the details needed to correctly cite a source. If you are experincing such difficulty with refercning feel free to come chat with one of the Writing & Learning Strategists in SLS and we can help you better determine where to find information and how to cite such sources.
Every professor is different with citations and how generous they are in making mistakes with them. Some are quite forgiving, but might deduct marks for formatting, such as missing commas and periods in the right places. The content in terms of referring that can be most detrimental to getting your referring incorrect is missing in-text citations. These are quite critical and not having them where they are needed is considered plagiarism
Be sure to familiarize yourself with the MRU library's citation guides. You can find these resources here. They are a great resource that was made to support you.
Come to an Student Learning Services workshop or book a one-on-one appointment with a learning strategist. They will be able to assist you with understanding and executing references. You can register for a workshop at this link and an appointment here.
There is also an APA Referencing Tutorial on D2L that can be found here.
Ask your instructor for clarification about references. Specifically what citation style they want you to use or what sources they are looking for (for example, peer reviewed articles). Your professors are there to help you and are the ones who will be grading your work.
Citation generators can be a great first step but they often contain mistakes. Make sure to check the citation for accuracy!
The MRU Library Website has a citation generator built into the sources that it houses. See an example below:
