Research Interest
Chi holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture – Honours, Master of Sustainable Architectural Studies, and PhD in Environmental Design from the University of Calgary. Her professional experiences in architecture and sustainable design include healthcare, institutional, multi-family housing, energy-efficient design, and zero-carbon buildings. She aspires to advance the teaching of sustainable design practices through experiential learning and integration of holistic life cycle thinking to address complex challenges within the built environment. Her scholarly interests include developing circular economy frameworks for communities, advancing carbon-neutral design, and establishing benchmarks for net-zero materials and buildings. She leads the Net Zero Design + Research Lab (NDL) and currently mentors four undergraduate students in applied research projects funded through internal and external grants.

Principal Investigator - 2 years Funding - "Building Black and Racialized immigrant community adaptability to circularity and decarbonization efforts in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta."
This research focuses on the imperative shift from linear economy towards a circular economy in the built environment. The objectives include establishing measures for transitioning communities to a circular economy, developing a framework for stakeholder-based evaluation of circular initiatives, and sharing knowledge for long-term cross-sectoral involvement. The study aims to address challenges unique to Black and racialized immigrant communities, contributing to local circular economy practices. This aligns with broader sustainability concepts, integrating economic viability, environmental stewardship, and societal well-being.
Co-investigator - Dr. Ranjan Datta
The Provost's TLEG and Arts Faculty Awards Internal Grants aim to enhance my teaching and scholarship pedagogy by providing support to hire three students to assist in developing content for an interactive digital learning tool, which serves as a sustainable materials database. This maximizes opportunities for experiential learning for students in the Systems courses, interior design program.
