Unit 2: Matter and Energy

Students will explore the flow of energy and cycling of matter through a variety of levels of living systems. These levels include molecular, cellular, organismal, population, ecosystem and biosphere. An emphasis will be placed on organic chemistry, bond energy, reaction energy profiles and electron flow. Students will design an experiment to study enzyme activity. They will use statistics to analyze photosynthetic pigment activity and experimental results on the respiration of different sugars by yeast. Discussion will focus around metabolism, nutrient cycles and ecological pyramids.
