Mentoring Ideas

There are many ways teachers and mentors can get to know their students!

Feel free to try out the activities below!

What's in a Name?

Have students individually research what their name means and put together a poster or slideshow about what they find to present to the class. Some things they could include:

1) What is the meaning of your name?

2) Were you named after anyone? Who? Why?

3) Do you have any nicknames? If so, what are they?

4) What has the popularity of your name been over the years? What year was it most popular? Least popular?

5) What celebrities or other famous people have your name?

6) What is the origin of your name?

7) Are there other variations or spellings of your name? What are they?

8) Draw a visual for your name- it could be what you think it should look like, or reflect what your name means.

This or That?

Put together a list of "this or that" questions. When asking them, have students stand on one side of the room or the other, just to see what people say.

Example this or that questions: Cats or dogs? Winter or summer? Youtube or Netflix? Ocean or lake? Hot dog or hamburger? Fruits or vegetables? Watch sports or play sports? English or math? Coffee or tea? Gum or candy? Pens or pencils? Sunglasses or hats? Silver or gold?

Letters

One good way to get to know your students is through writing. A question you could ask- What do you wish your teacher knew about you?

Classmate Bingo

Try making your own bingo board and fill in information such as "has a sibling" or "owns at least two pets" or "writes left-handed" and see how many students can find people to write their names down on the board.
