The Scarborough gas mine is located 375 km off the coast of Western Australia in the commonwealth waters and is approximately holds 1.11 trillion cubic feet of dry gas. Owned by WA oil and gas company Woodside, Scarborough mine the seafloor in dangerously deep waters, 3oo km off of Western Australia mining fossil fuels for petroleum almost 900 m below sea level, discovered in 1979 with just over 40 years of mining and has become Australia's most controversial mine.
Some minerals form when salt water evaporates or when chemicals come out of hot fluids.
A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound having an orderly internal. construction, manufacturing, agriculture and energy supply.
In dangerously deep water, Scarborough will mine the seafloor 300 kilometers from the coast of Western Australia. Over 900 meters below sea level, fossil gas will be drilled mechanically. In order to extract it, wells are drilled through coal seams and some of the water is extracted in order to lower the water pressure. Coal is released from its natural gas by this process. A gas compressor plant separates the gas from the water and transports it via pipelines to gas transmission plants.
The Scarborough gas mine earned an estimate of $8.5 billion USD in 2018. if the most accessible and valuable materials have been extracted, the mine is closed, and the site must be restored back to its original state.
These potentially catastrophic gases and vapours may be released from wells as well as equipment and machinery including shale shakers. Some of the most usual gases on oil and gas extraction sites have hydrocarbons including methane, propane and pentane and hydrogen sulphide. Over its lifetime, the Scarborough to Pluto project will emit an estimated 1.37 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.
The Marthundera people did not give permission for people to mine on their land due it being invasion. Recently Mardudhunera woman Raelene Cooper sought a judges review of the decision to grant the approval of mining despite concerns consultation with traditional owners had been inadequate.
Cooper said she was worried about the effect seismic blasting would have on sea country but had not had the opportunity to explain this properly to Woodside.
“The activities happening in our sea country are affecting places of cultural significance and disrupting our songlines,” she alleged. “The whales are showing us all around the world that they are in trouble, and if they are in trouble then so is our very existence. Woodside are not above the law and they’re not above our cultural lore.”
Companies can use waste rocks in simple on-site construction, like backfilling voids and reconstructing mined terrain in a way that prevents soil erosion. Mining can cause in erosion, sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, or the contamination of soil, groundwater, and surface water
