Administration of the Program

1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution is required for admission to a master’s program. A master’s degree from a recognized institution is required for admission to a doctoral program.

2. For an applicant to a master’s program, an undergraduate grade point of at least 2.0, and for an applicant to a doctoral program, a grade point of at least 1.75 in the Master’s program, or some evidences of potential ability to pursue a graduate degree, e.g. excellent performance in teaching or research.

3. Evidences of suitable background or its equivalent in the field of study sought. The above criteria shall be enforced through

o examination/evaluation of scholastic credentials,

o recommendation from two former professors and distinguished authority in the field/discipline sought,

o character reference

o personal interview,

o Admission test or any appropriate means.

Applicants must submit all required credentials to the Office of the Graduate School.

Credentials are evaluated by the School of Graduate Studies and are forwarded to the department/college concerned for further appraisal.

Admission is contingent upon acceptance by both academic unit and the graduate school. (A college may be considered a department if it has not been formally departmentalized).

Upon admission to the Graduate School, a permit to register is issued. The permit should indicate the conditions as prescribed by the department/college, vis-à-vis, classification of the student, deficiencies, etc.

Admission Procedures

The procedures for admission are as follows:

1. Submit his/her original Transcript of Records and fill in some e-forms required by the Graduate School.

2. Take graduate school entrance tests.

3. After taking the online examination, the student will be referred to the Program concerned for the online interview.

In the case of student seeking admission to the Graduate School whose English proficiency is low, he/she will be advised to satisfy the English proficiency requirement before he/she can be admitted as a regular student to the Graduate School.

Classification of Graduate Students

Graduate students upon admission shall be classified as follows:

Regular. A full-pledge regular graduate student who satisfactorily complies with all the requirements for admission including those prescribed by the department/college offering the degree sought.

1. Conditional. A student with academic deficiencies (e.g. prerequisite courses) but satisfies all the requirements for the admission. The said deficiencies should be satisfied on or before the end of the second semester of the first year of attendance.

2. Probation. A student whose undergraduate grade-point average is below 2.0 but has proven to be capable to pursue a master’s degree, or, a student whose grade point average (GPA) in the master’s program is below 1.75 but has proven to be capable to pursue doctoral studies.

3. Special

(a) A student who, in writing, does not intend to pursue a graduate degree but seeks admission to the Graduate School to register in some courses. Credits earned by this type of student are, during the period as special student, not credited for any degree unless the basic requirements for admission to pursue a graduate degree have been satisfied, approved and recommended by the department/college. Such credits shall not exceed 9 units.

(b) A student who is classified on special status based on his performance on the graduate school admission examinations. A student under this classification may earn a maximum of twelve (12) graduate units over two semesters. The classification status may be upgraded at the end of the second semesters based on the student’s academic performance over two semesters.
