Showcase
For my showcase, I focus on three categories, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, sports leadership and professionalism. These three categories are important to me, because they are things that I work on in my everyday life. These categories are also areas where I think I can help others.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is a disorder that many people are either diagnosed with or experience at a low level. It hinders one's ability to focus or stay on task. There are ways to improve the ability to stay focused and work and below are the areas I believe offer the best opportunities. If used together, these areas can help a person who has ADHD have better classroom performance.
Time Managment is important and is something that can be used every day in life no matter the circumstances. Being able to have a healthy balance to complete something you are working on is very beneficial and can reduce stress. The reason my time management is so important is because many people that have ADHD or other disabilities struggle to focus for a long period of time. The idea that I came up with was something that I do myself which is recording myself talking, so then I can just listen to the recording and do something physical. Why am I messing around? For example, I can choose to play basketball or shoot hoops while listening to study questions through headphones or speakers. This allows me to distract my body from sitting and reading, but still gives my brain the opportunity to gain knowledge. In the artifact I chose I discuss tactics as well as techniques I use to manage my time with a busy schedule by doing active activities while learning at the same time.
Hands on Learning is important to those that have been diagnosed with ADHA. Many people who struggle with disabilities often need to have a fidget device to mess around with when they are learning. The idea that I had come up with was creating an interactive fidget that allows students to learn and or be quizzed by using a fidget tool. The item I came up with was a dream catcher because you can constantly quiz yourself while having fun and using an interactive tool that promotes hands on learning. In this artifact I take a dive into dimensional learning by using puzzles to come up with a technique of studying. The dreamcatcher allows you to ask yourself questions while also playing a game that keeps your hands busy.
The pedagogy that I am going to focus on is non-linear pedagogy. I learned about non-linear pedagogy during my Skill Development in Athletes course taught by Andy Driska. I think that this is important because we discussed the ability to develop skills through learning different methods. As someone with ADHD I think it is very beneficial to have multiple ways of teaching the same thing. The idea for non-linear pedagogy that we discussed was the use of athletics when it comes to training different muscles and training different actions using different sports, or methods of completing that action. Overall, I think that being able to be multidimensional within teaching helps learners grow and succeed. In this artifact I discuss coaching and the pedagogy in which we use other objects, courses or information to use in other classes to help us succeed.
Advocating for oneself with ADHD is a great skill to have. I had the ability to get a 504 plan with my diagnosis that allowed me to get the benefits that I needed. The ability to discuss the help you may need as well as areas where you're good and bad is great. Self evaluation is one of the harderst things to do and the ability to develop strong and honest relationships with peers, professors and others you may deal with on an everyday basis is very important. In this artifact I discuss how I helped develop and learn skills with my ADHD diagnosis and ways to help others become more successful while developing more learning and working skills.
The topics I've chosen are excellent for encouraging teammates, as well as coaches connecting with players. I believe that positive reinforcement along with informal interviews, has the best impact on athletes. These topics allow athletes to both open up and discover things about themselves.
Positive reinforcement is super important when it comes to building bonds with your team and getting them to compete at a high-level every day. Holding people accountable is very important. In this generation, many people think that being held accountable or being told that they’re doing something wrong is someone not liking them. One thing that I will continuously incorporate in my life is if I have to tell someone what they’re doing is wrong I will politely follow-up with something positive that they are doing that is making a difference so that it doesn’t come off as just being negative. Overall, I think that being a part of a team for the last five-years has taught me many things on how to work with different personalities as well as get the best out of different individuals by encouraging them in many different ways. In this artifact I work with a young athlete to help them stay positive through struggles they are facing in their daily routines and work.
One of the biggest takeaways I had from the informal interview on motivation, was the ability to help guide someone without giving them the advice. I think it is important to help guide one another without always just giving the answer. The informal part of this is beneficial because it helps someone come up with the answer by themselves without having to feel like they always need to go to someone for advice. The ability to give guiding questions helps someone open up and discuss things that they normally would not with other people. I think this is super beneficial for the person who I was interviewing because they developed trust in themselves, and the decisions that they made, as well as opened up to me about the struggles that they endured that they kept to themselves. In this artifact I discuss ways to become a better public speaker as well as how important communication is. This artifact shows how one can work and practice public speaking by using tips to practice.
Leadership and Professionalism
Leadership is a phenomenal skill to have because it allows you the opportunity to bring others along and reach goals you never thought you could. The ability to demonstrate professionalism is a great attribute to possess because when someone is professional, they are highly respected, and being respected typically places you in the category of a leader. In this artifact I interview an athlete who opened up about his struggles with having to sit out becasue of transfer rules as well as other struggles gon through in his college career with basketball.
As someone who is very shy and struggles with presenting, I have found myself as a good public speaker, because I tend not to worry and try to be anyone else other than myself. My entire life I have been in the spotlight, which has been both good and bad. The way that I have found the best success is being prepared. I think that being prepared is taking time to practice before you have to do the real thing. Presentations can be intimidating when you’re not prepared but the more that you practice the better you will do just like anything else in life. In this artifact I discuss ways to become a better public speaker as well as how important communication is. This artifact shows how one can work and practice public speaking by using tips to practice.
In improving the work environment, I decided to focus on the Michigan State men’s basketball managers and figure out ways how they can feel more appreciated and have more benefits for the hard work and dedication that they provide for the men’s basketball team. I organized monthly meetings with them to discuss positives and negatives in the work environment. This way they could see that their work was noticed by others. The ability to make a work enviorment more positive as well as beneficial for those who are not as represented is a awesome skill for people to have and is very benficial to create a great work environment.
