TE 845 Language Diversity and Literacy Instruction

Description: This course offers a plethora of resources. It really opened my eyes and sparked an interest in me for diverse teaching practices and multicultural texts. We read books on working with English Language Learners and teaching in a multicultural classroom. We discussed closing the achievement gap. One of the texts was even written by the professor. One of the projects that we completed was working with an ELL Student and designing appropriate lesson plans. I learned a lot about how to identify struggling readers, how to design lesson plans to help them learn new strategies, and become more confident readers.
TE 849 Methods of Teaching Child and Adult Literature
Fall 2021 Instructor: Mary Juzwik
Description: This class gets students thinking about children and young adult literature. The text book consists of an array of diverse children and YA novels. We use these resources to think critically about the text. There is group work via Zoom. There are literary responses and book talks. This class introduces you to books that are great additions to the classroom. Hearing classmates responses and participating in discussions guides you to think more critically about the text. The effect that including these books in the classroom has on students is inspiring.
Spring 2022 Instructor: Steven Weiland
Description: In this class we learn about the different domains of educational inquiry. This course is self paced and uses hypermedia. there is a lot reading, especially focused on John Dewey. Each module has writing assignments. The assignments compare theories and theorists. Students learn how educational inquiry is conducted and are able to choose a topic and conduct their own educational inquiry.
EAD 850 Multicultural Education
Spring 2022 Instructor: Leslie Gonzalez
Description: This course is about multicultural education and leadership in the school setting. There are many discussion boards and case studies. There was a fun project where we worked in groups to choose a tv show. Then we discussed issues having to do with multiculturalism or racism in the workplace. We choose The Office. It was eye opening to analyze a popular show and realize what effect a show like that can have on people.
EAD 867 Case Studies in Educational Leadership
Summer 2022 Instructor: Leslie Gonzalez
This class discusses issues relevant to educational leaders and organizations. We read the text Santamaria and Santamaria. We had various Discussion Boards based off of the readings. One project was finding a common issue in Education and discussing it as a group.
EAD 824 Leading Teacher Learning
Summer 2022 Instructor: Melissa Usiak
This class focuses on developing leadership skills and strategies. This is an authentic experience for leaders to practice their skills. This course is very hands-on and interactive. Discussion board is used often.This class offers a unique learning experience, using multimodes of media. Students get to know each other better through the sharing of perspectives and opinions on reading.
TE 846 Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners
Fall 2022 Instructor: Ayah Issah
This course offers many insightful readings and viewings on helping literacy learners. This is a huge project that begins at the start of the course and progresses weekly. Each student chooses a struggling reader to work with. There are steps to complete each week. They are first assessed, lesson plans are designed and implemented, and then the student is reassessed. This class is impressive because students are out in the field, helping struggling readers. The entire semester is spent planning and working with a student. The professor offers a lot of feedback and there is also a lot of sharing with peers.
EAD 863 Training in Professional Development
Fall 2022 Instructor: John Dirkx
This course is to help students develop skills in regard to workplace PD and training. You are graded based on assignments and discussion posts. There are many great resources about hosting a successful PD. Students get the chance to critique a PD and design their own. As you learn about what makes PD effective, you are able to start planning your own PD.
EAD 801 Leadership and Organizational Development
Spring 2023 Instructor: Kristy Stein
This course is designed to teach students about different theories in Leadership. Students write a total of twelve overviews about leadership theory throughout the course. This helps us to gain a better understanding of each theory and its components. Students also have the opportunity to analyze a case study and look at it through the perspective of three leadership theories. This exercise requires higher order thinking and can be quite challenging.
ED 870 Capstone Portfolio Course
Spring 2023 Instructor: Matthew Koehler
Students create a digital portfolio during the Capstone Portfolio Course. This portfolio is a collection of the work that has been completed throughout the master degree program. The format for this class is layed out brilliantly, using different forms of media. The weekly spreadsheet, or share tracker, keeps you accountable and on task. The Feedback Notebook tells you what you need to edit. The course website is dedicated to explaining the weekly learning goals and assignments. Flipgrid is used to share and connect with peers. It is an extremely well organized and unique class. The professor is timely with his feedback. You also have a multitude of oppertunities to receive feedback from peers.
