This project proposes a multimodal research framework to generate empirical evidence that can inform the development of trauma-informed design guidelines for high-risk institutional facilities. The objectives are to support trauma-informed, evidence-based facility planning; examine how spatial, operational, and environmental design factors affect high-risk institutional settings; and generate applied research evidence to inform resilient, trauma-responsive, and data-informed built environments using design technologies such as VR simulations and neurophysiological measures (EEG and eye-tracking).
Greening Hospitality: How Hotels’ Indoor Natural Landscapes Affect Guests’ Experiences and Brand Equity

This research project investigates how indoor natural landscapes shape guest experiences in hotels. Given the substantial investment hotels make in indoor landscaping and the growing use of greenery in hospitality environments, empirical evidence is needed to clarify its effects on guest experience and brand equity. The study examines how indoor greenery influences environmental perceptions, emotional responses, psychological well-being, and attitudes toward hotel brands. A controlled experiment compares different quantities and placements of greenery using measures of visual attention, physiological response, and psychological perception. The findings provide evidence-based guidance for creating healthier, more engaging, and nature-connected hotel environments.

VR: Tool for Students' Improved Learnability and Creativity - Using VR in Interior Design Studios

The project aims to advance students' spatial understanding and design skills by adopting Virtual Reality (VR) as a design tool in design studio settings. With the funding provided, VR has been actively integrated into the multi-year-level design studios to help students obtain real-scale spatial experience and make their decision-making process more successful. Research work was conducted to provide empirical evidence of the beneficial effects of using VR on students’ learning experience and creativity. The funding has been used to support the following specific objectives of the project: 1) conducting semester projects using VR in the design process at different studio levels; 2) investigating the learning experience of students on VR in diverse interior design studio settings; 3) empirically examining the effect of VR on students' improved object and spatial understanding; and 4) exploring the benefits of using VR on students' creativity.
