  • Overview: In this lesson, the objective is that students will be able to represent numbers in expanded form. This will help students understand place value when working with multi-digit numbers and computations. The lesson includes an opening involving a number talk with four tasks, a teacher demonstration discussing the three ways to represent numbers and providing different manipulatives/tools, a student practice time without manipulatives, and a closing with students individually completing practice problems.   • Overview: This resource page is from the blog of Caffeine Queen Teacher. As the site states, “If you’re looking for the best strategies for teaching multi-digit multiplication and long division, you’ve found a great place to start. These are the easiest methods for student learning. Best of all, they work with 4th-grade students, 5th-grade students, at-risk students, strugglers, and special education students – ALL STUDENTS!” On the site, there are organizers for multi-digit multiplication and long division using Shape Math. The creator uses shapes and colors to scaffold students in solving multiplication and division. On the site, there are tips on how to differentiate the organizers, how to introduce and teach the organizers, and typical scaffolding for eventually phasing out the organizers.

  • Overview: This is a blog post by educator Brian Bushart overviewing how and why to use numberless word problems in your classroom. He gives the justification of how numberless word problems can help your students by linking to multiple of his other blog posts. He also has a treasure trove of Google Slides that he created for each word problem type. The slides include annotations in the notes so that you know exactly what questions to ask your students.

  • Overview: This resource is a lesson plan for applying adding and subtracting decimals to a real world situation. Students use a food menu to model a restaurant experience. It provides the teacher with lesson procedures and extension activities. For example, it suggests that teachers could include multiplication of decimals by incorporating sales tax for the restaurant.
