Number & Operations — Fractions

Resources

  • Topics: Fractions

  • Overview: In this lesson, the objective is that students will be able to write fraction equations to represent the measures in a very simple musical score. This lesson integrates math (fractions) with music and technology. It makes use of Mathematical Practice 7, look for and make use of structure. Students observe patterns kinesthetically and musically to better understand fractions. The lesson structure includes an opener, a section on the values of musical notes, a section on “listen, look, and apply,” and a wrap up.

  • Topics: Fractions; Benchmark fractions; Number lines

  • Overview: In this lesson, the objective is that students will be able to make generalizations about benchmark fractions using evidence from number lines. The common benchmark fractions are 0, ½, and 1. Understanding benchmarks can help students with estimating a fraction’s amount. Furthermore, understanding benchmark placement on a number line can help a student’s fraction number sense. The lesson outlines a warm-up to assess prior benchmark knowledge, a launch to relate number lines to fraction tiles, guided practices to make a number line with paper folding and to further analyze fractions equivalent to ½ and 1, a practice involving more student participation, and an exit slip.

  • Overview: By students using this Google Slides resource, the objective is that they will be able to multiply fractions by whole numbers and by fractions. The Google Slides includes models (e.g. arrays), mathematical equations, and word problems. Students practice solving numerous fraction equations alongside different kinds of fraction models. The Google Slides platform allows for interactive practice and sharing work. Teachers can assign the Google Slides as a homework assignment, a math center, an assessment, and so forth.
