¡Hola!
My name is Rachel Emery and I am a candidate to receive a Master of Arts degree in Foreign Language Teaching from Michigan State University. This website features various artifacts of my learning in order to show my growth as an educator.
I received a BA in Spanish from the University of Michigan in 2013, a K-12 teacher certification in Spanish, and a secondary certification in English.
Currently I teach 5th and 6th grade Spanish in Winnetka, IL. I teach using TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) and Comprehensible Input methods and enjoy working with students as we create stories, dramatize readings, and negotiate in the target language.
In my free time I like to write for my students, garden, and sew.

This portfolio highlights some of my educational experiences in the Master of Arts in Foreign Language Teaching (MAFLT) program at Michigan State University. The documents and lesson plans reflect my learning throughout the program. In this program I learned, among many other things, to evaluate research, advocate for teaching rooted in principles of second language acquisition, and to incorporate Intercultural skills into a TPRS classroom. Through this program I also explored areas of personal interest, such as reading in a second language and developing a teacher's guide for a class novel.
Under Pedagogical Skills, I have included lesson plans and presentations about a proficiency assessment, using technology to foster group discussion in writing, and a lesson on the intercultural skills of discovery and interaction. A video of me teaching 5th graders in a typical TPRS storytelling lesson is also available there.
Under "Experiential Module" is my teacher's guide that teaches intercultural communicative skills using a comprehension-based reader that I wrote called Pancho y las momias.
Feel free to contact me at srtaremery @ gmail. com if you would like to discuss any of these artifacts in more detail.
