Children's Creative Mathematics

Collection of projects at the intersection of children's informal mathematics and children's funds of knowledge.

Because mathematics often becomes a disempowering school activity even for young students, I study children’s imaginative ways of doing mathematics and the environments that support their creative sense making. I research children’s creative mathematics in and out of school settings. I also explore children's learning with and from digital media that has been purposefully designed to promote positive representations of children doing mathematics, (e.g., Cyberchase - https://pbskids.org/cyberchase/ ).

Educational Justice in the Mathematics Classroom

Mathematics is a school subject that many students associate with failure, shame, and competitive learning. This strand of my research is focused on developing theoretical and practical tools to understand and address the challenges of re-imagining mathematics classrooms as nurturing, inclusive and equitable spaces for learning.
