Throughout the Spring 2023 Semester, students of the CLS 492 course, taught by Dr. Delia Fernandez-Jones, conducted interviews with those integral to founding Chicano/Latino Studies at MSU. On top of this, the class utilized the José F. Treviño Chicanx/Latinx Activism Collection at the MSU Library to learn about the foundations of MSU's CLS community first-hand. Below you will find oral histories, archival information, and ethnographic information we used to do this research.
Rosa Morales Torres is a Saginaw, Michigan native who was raised by her immigrant parents from Michoacán, Mexico. Rosa transferred to MSU from Delta Community College, studying journalism. She worked on The State News, community papers in the area, WKAR, and so much more. Watch our interview with Rosa to learn more about her amazing impact in the area, and how she helped start the CLS movement at MSU!
Juan Marinez was born in his parents' native state of Texas, but was raised in East Lansing, Michigan. Despite living two miles away from MSU, Juan had never stepped foot on campus before his time as a student. Nonetheless, he decided to become a Spartan, and graduated from MSU with a degree in Social Work and a minor in Spanish. Juan worked alongside Rosa Morales to start a Mexican-American Organization here at MSU!
Diana Rivera was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, but during her childhood her family relocated to Michigan. Diana decided to attend MSU because of a Spartan recruiter: Jose Treviño. Diana majored in Racial and Ethnic Studies, minoring in Chicano Studies and Native American Studies. Learn more about the Chicano/Latino Studies movement before we had Chicano/Latino Studies!
Below, you can see the hard work CLS 492 students found in order to do our research projects, just like this website! We utilized the José Treviño Chicanx/Latinx Activism Collection. We owe a special thanks to Diana Rivera who started this collection and Andrea Salazar-McMillan who currently nurtures and safeguards this collection.
