Allow students to make choices that are meaningful to them and consequential for their science learning
Video Examples
(You do NOT need to watch all videos! Choose the ones that you are interested in/have time for)
For each video, consider:
What is the teacher doing that aligns with your current understanding of this principle? (These can go in the "Examples" box of your Frayer model)
What would it look like if the teacher was NOT enacting this Autonomy principle in the video? In other words, what are the less autonomy-supportive/more controlling alternatives that the teacher could have chosen instead when facilitating this activity? (These can go in the "Non-Examples" box of your Frayer model)
Video 1: Lab Responsibilities (2:21) - The teacher reviews lab procedures and roles with her students (also listed in SEP3 videos).
Video 2: Choose a Claim (1:59) - The teacher "mixes it up" to get more students weighing in on the central question.
Video 3: Campfire Style (1:35) - The teacher uses an alternative seating model from her normal assigned seats.
Video 4: Great Suggestion (0:55) - A student offers a spontaneous suggestion about how to use a checklist handout.
Video 5: Agreeing on a Scratch (0:26) - During an investigation, students ask the teacher what counts as a scratch.
