Ayanfe Jamison - Farm-to-Table Educator, New City Neighbors
In this session New City Neighbors will share lessons learned as we created an online virtual garden club. The club was designed for elementary-middle school youth. It was developed by our Farm-to-table Educator Ayanfe Jamison with New City Farm's youth employees and interns. The club involved weekly hands-on activities for home, as well as short video profiles of leaders in the West Michigan food system with an emphasis on leaders of color.
Julie Brunson - Executive Director, H.O.P.E. Gardens
The mission of Hope Gardens is to bring sustainable, no-till organic gardening practices to neighborhoods and communities that are challenged with finances, growing conditions and time. The organic “covering” method minimizes maintenance during the growing season while further enriching the soil for gardening. Hope Gardens also offers a portfolio of services to schools, including in-class experiences, after school programs, and summer engagement. While we focus on young children, we are also training parents and teachers as we deliver our services. Our core mission includes sustainability concepts coupled to honoring the dignity, value and independence that comes from people providing for themselves. During our talk, we will share some of our successes within West Michigan. At the same time, we seek to broker a dialogue on how to move from provisioning food and growing skills at small scales to build larger food networks and institutions for food sovereignty.

What is a great way to get students interested in trying fruits and vegetables? Mix in a little competition. Trying new foods can be intimidating for young kids, but fuse small portions, zero-pressure and a game-like atmosphere and you have a winning combination. Munch Madness is a take on March Madness (NCAA Basketball Tournament) complete with brackets and highly debated matchups, but with fruits and vegetables replacing the college basketball teams. Prior to the start of tasting, students fill out a bracket with the hopes of having the greatest number of correct guesses. During a matchup, students receive two different foods to try, they taste both, and then submit their vote for the one they thought tasted the best. The one with the most votes moves onto the next round. We are almost ready for the tip-off! Are you ready to play on this taste test court?

This workshop provides an introduction to digital storytelling as an educational tool for food systems and nutrition related content. In addition, participants will learn about free software and non-royalty content websites to support this instruction. Although the workshop is intended for novice learners, experienced digital storytellers are welcome to provide their best practices using this process.
