Description: Physical education continues the emphasis on health-related fitness and developing the skills and habits necessary for a lifetime of activity. This program includes skill development and the application of rules and strategies of complex difficulty in at least three of the following different movement forms: (1) health-related fitness activities (cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition), (2) aerobic exercise, (3) team sports, (4) individual and dual sports, (5) gymnastics, (6) outdoor pursuits, (7) aquatics, (8) dance, and (9) recreational games. Ongoing assessment includes both written and performance-based skill evaluations.
Semester 1 is based on the premise that physical activity and participation are important for all students, regardless of their level of athletic skill or ability. Throughout various activities, students in our program will learn how to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. In addition, we hope to instill enjoyment of physical activity, as well as an understanding of the importance of maintaining physical fitness. Modules that are included in the course are exercise logs & quizzes, BMI/target heart rate, community fitness, nutrition, exercise safety, team sports, individual sports, and the benefits of exercise.
Semester 2 is the continuation of the Semester 1 Physical Education course. This is a flexible paced course where students will have many opportunities to enhance their overall health and fitness through a differentiated learning environment.The purpose of this course is to acquire knowledge of physical fitness concepts, to understand the influence of lifestyle on health and fitness, and to begin to develop an optimal level of fitness through lifetime activities. Students are taught the content that includes, but not limited to, the following: introduction to physical fitness, exercise logs & quizzes, cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, flexibility, muscle endurance, body composition, nutrition, personal fitness and lifetime activities.
Semester 1 - 1 Credit Students entering Grades 10-11-12
Description: During this 6-week online graduation requirement course, students will: comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention; demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health-related risks; demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health; demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health; and demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health. This course includes the following major content areas: (1) Health and Wellness, (2) Violence Prevention, (3) Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs, (4) Fitness, CPR and AED, (5) Nutrition, (6) Growth and Development.
