Students are encouraged to focus on their unique interest in a meaningful way. They are surrounded by instructors who encourage them to build their talents and skills. We are able to help students discover their talents and develop them. Students can build confidence in things they do well, so that they are able to tackle things with which they may struggle will more grit and perseverance.
Art integration naturally allows for students to conquer learning tasks in a way that is suitable to their needs. Because there are so many different ways to conceptualize ideas through an art integration approach, students are given more freedom in their learning.
We regularly progress monitor our students so we know if they are struggling with skills. We follow an RTI outline that enables us to intervene as students struggle instead of waiting until it is too late. Students receive 45 minutes of intervention or enrichment each day. If they continue to struggle, they may be seen by one of our campus interventionists. If students struggle with characteristics of dyslexia, they will see our dyslexia interventionist.
We try to reward students for doing the right thing. With our STAGE program, students earn tickets for doing the right thing. They may spend those tickets on rewards as they wish. This system works well for those who are intrinsically motivated as well as for those that need immediate feedback. A student may save as many or as few tickets as they wish before cashing them in. We also use a color-coded clip chart system to manage classroom behavior. Students can see a tangible representation of their behavior and have the opportunity to correct misbehavior before coming to the office. We believe that applying consistent boundaries is healthy for our students and we are there to support them when they may struggle with making smart choices.
