When working with place value in second-grade, we look at the hundreds, tens, and ones places. We often use place value mats and charts that break the numbers into their place value, like the one pictured.
We use flats to represent 100, rods for 10, and units for ones.
We make numbers, read numbers, and learn different ways to write numbers.
We write numbers in four different ways:

Expanded form (800 + 40 + 6)
Word form (eight hundred forty-six)
Unit form (8 hundreds, 4 tens, 6 ones)
