Reading
Your child will spend much of his/her day participating in activities designed to promote his/her reading development. We use Fountas and Pinnell, Orton Gillingham, and Michael Heggerty series to teach reading comprehension, fluency, phonics, and phonological awareness. It is very important that your child practices reading at home each night. Reading at home with your child is the single most important thing you can do this year to help your child!
Math
We use Envision Math. Through hands-on activities and practice, students will gain understanding and learn strategies for many mathematical concepts including: addition and subtraction to 20, money identification & counting, measurement, geometry, patterns, graphs, telling time to the hour and half hour, probability, and place value. Problem solving and number sense activities will also be incorporated into the daily math instruction.
Science
We use PLTW for our Science curriculum. We learn and discuss several topics including: living and non-living, habitats, how plants and animals live, life cycles, food chains, land, water, air, weather, observing matter, movement and sound, learning about energy, day and night sky, and science in our world.
Social Studies
We will use Studies Weekly for Social Studies. We learn and discuss several topics concerning our world such as neighborhoods, communities, our country, holidays, and families. We use Scholastic News as part of our Social Studies curriculum.
Spelling
Spelling words are sent home weekly. Word tests and sentence dictation tests are given each Friday. Students are encouraged to use the "RED words" to help with their spelling when completing daily assignments.
Specials
Your child will participate in Music, Gym, Art, and Technology throughout the week. Specials rotate on a 6 day schedule. All students should know how to tie their own shoes. Please be sure that your child wears tennis shoes (or has them in their locker) on PE days. Student will need an art shirt to put on over their clothes for art. They will need headphones for technology.
Library
Your child will get to visit the school library and check out a library book. Library is on a 6 day rotation. Your child's book must be returned in order to check out a new one.
