Mandan High values its sports. Which means that the school holds sports high on the scale of importance. Some are more supported than others, but all are on the mural wall down by the main gym.
All of the sports on the wall are baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, diving, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling.
The mural was a collaboration of many peoples ideas from MHS Principle Mark Andreson, Mark Weist, and many others outside of the school.
“We shared our vision, along with the photos and wording, with a graphic designer who helped bring the concept to life.” Mr. Weist said “This final design captured exactly what we were hoping for, and we’re very pleased with how it turned out.”
This mural went through many design changes to finally be what it is. This mural was to share the rich history that's in MHS sports. “A culture of rich tradition at MHS.” Mr. Anderson said “We have pictures from numerous generations and years on them.”
The mural gives a representation of all the Mandan athletes. “During visits to other schools, we noticed how sports murals were being used to celebrate athletes and programs,” said Mr. Weist.
The bottom floor of the building is very bland and some students call it the basement or dungeon. The sports mural adds to the room to incorporate a less plain area. A teacher at Mandan high school said that it was a way to fill a blank wall.
The walls of the gym area are littered with these photos. One has sayings and athletes, two have just athletes, and one wall has the various balls of the different sports at Mandan High.
