Frequently Asked Questions:
Does the student NEED to have their permit to participate in driver's ed?
YES! They cannot sign-up for driver's ed if they will not have their learners permit.
The MUST have the card with them in order to do any behind the wheel training - if they do not have their permit on them, they will need to either pick it up during the lesson or reschedule their lesson for a different day.
Its a good idea to get in the habit of keeping your learner's permit on you at all times.
Many students keep this with them in the back of their phone case ☺️
When do we need to sign-up for Driver's Ed?
Summer Drivers Ed:
Students can sign-up for summer Driver's Ed towards the end of March, information will be shared about all summer school courses through the MHS Counseling office.
Frequently there are more students wanting to complete driver's ed, than there are spots for the classes. Students are selected based on a lottery selection to ensure fair selection.
Online Drivers Ed:
Sessions are offered for Fall Semester and Spring Semester
Students can register through the MHS Counseling office.
How do I pay for Driver's Ed?
The cost is $300 (subject to change based on MHS Administration)
This can pay the fee online at www.myschoolbucks.com
Families can also pay by check (payable to MHS) or cash.
If paying by cash or check this should be done at the MHS front office.
Fees need to be paid by the first day of Driver' Ed.
How much time driving should my student do before driver's ed?
Short answer, as much as possible! The best way to practice is to get out and drive!
They are going to get way more out of driver's ed if they can already safely control the car.
We recommend students have 20+ hours of driving experience PRIOR to BTW training.
It is a common misconception that we are teaching them EVERYTHING about driving, but in reality we are just here to ensure that they have the set of skills needed to function within a variety of driving situations. It would be impossible for us to completely teach each driver from square one in only 12 hours of BTW and observational training.
I am nervous to have my student drive, where should we start?
Low traffic areas are more common than you maybe realize, try starting in a residential area where slow moving traffic is more common. Level roads that travel straight for a long way are a great place to start!
Time of day makes a big difference too! Try driving after 6:00pm on week days and mornings before 10:00am on weekends and you might find that there are fewer cars on the road.
Its important to think about the route you will drive, random turns don't yield good results...
Try to give your driver ample time to signal, slow down, and turn! (at least a block before the turn, using landmarks not necessarily street names to start)
"At the upcoming intersection, lets take a right turn."
How long will it take to complete driver's ed?
Summer Drivers Ed:
There is a required three weeks of classroom instruction.
The behind the wheel training timeline depends mostly on your behind the wheel instructor and your driving partner's availability to drive. The more available you are, the easier it will be to quickly schedule your lessons.
Online Drivers Ed:
Students complete self-paced modules, they move as fast as they can successfully demonstrate they have the information!
The BTW portion depends on your flexibility to drive (and the schedule of your driving partner and BTW Instructor), but all driving needs to be completed within the semester you are enrolled (Fall - prior to winter break; Spring - prior to Finals week)
We have something planned during the classroom portion of driver's ed and we will be out of town - can our student miss class for a few days?
No. There is a large amount of information shared each day during classroom instruction. Students are not allowed to miss class unless there is an extenuating circumstance (illness or death) if more than one day is missed the student will be dropped from the class with no refund or credit given.
Students who are sick/have an emergency and miss one day MUST make up the classroom hours they were gone for. If the hours are not made up the student cannot pass driver's ed, as per century code requirements.
We are taking a trip after classroom instruction is done, how do we make sure we don't miss a BTW lesson?
Make sure that your student is aware of any dates that they would be unable to drive during the summer, like if you will be out of town for a trip. When scheduling their BTW lessons, they can ensure that they do not have any lessons that overlap with the time they will be out of town.
Who will my student drive with?
Summer Driver's Ed
Typically students drive with someone within their assigned class section (this makes it easier to schedule lessons for these students)
Students get to choose their student driving partner, some students may need to drive with a student they do not know if the need arises.
Once students have determined their driving partner, they will schedule out lessons with one of our behind the wheel instructors.
This happens during the first day of classroom instruction.
Online Driver's Ed
Students are paired up and collaborate electronically to determine the days/times they would be able to drive together, then they communicate with their BTW instructor to confirm those days work with them as well.
Can I request a specific driving instructor for my student?
Summer:
After determining their driving partner your student should approach the instructor your family would like. Please remember that all of our BTW instructors are highly qualified to teach driver's ed - instruction is easier for both parties if there isn't a previously established family connection.
Online:
Currently only Mr. Johnson does the BTW instruction with our online students.
My student is doing another summer class (like summer swim) and driver's ed, how does that work?
In this situation the student will attend both classes as required, but will need to be flexible and have some later afternoon availability to work on their BTW training.
Where do we need to meet for BTW lessons?
All BTW lessons will pick up and drop off from the MHS campus - each BTW teacher will communicate exact locations with their students.
We will not pick up or drop off students at home or work for lessons.
My student did not "pass" the final test what happens now?
This means that your student will not earn MHS credit for the class and that they can still qualify for the certificate of training (still need to complete all driving lessons)
Is there an insurance discount for completing drivers ed?
Many insurance companies to provide a discount for your student upon completing a driver's education program! Check with your insurance provider for details about what your provider allows, each one is a little different!
Our summer program often brings in a presentation called Alive at 25, which is an accredited defensive driving presentation (hosted by ND Safety Counsel). This program also typically qualifies students who complete the program for an insurance discount.
Please note that our online offering is not able to bring in Alive at 25, as this is an in-person class.
